1 The value of summer reading is well known. In Summer Learning and the Effects of Schooling, Barbara Heyns states reading is the single most effective summer activity in regards to summer learning. Heyns concludes that children who read as few as six books during the summer months gain or maintain reading skills achieved during the preceding school year, while students who do not read during the summer may fall back as much as a grade level in their skills. Why does summer reading serve as an antidote to summer learning loss? The answer is simple: Practice makes perfect. From Summer Reading: Antidote to Summer Reading Loss by Linda Cornwell Dear Parents/ Guardians, Let s keep the reading going! In order to do that, we want you to know about our summer reading incentives. Encourage your children to read, and read along with them! * On our Brennan home page, please find links to the Summer Book Form, and Summer Reading Lists by grade level. * For every book read, students should fill out a summer book form (found on our Brennan home page) and return it to school by September 9, 2016.For every book form returned students will receive a raffle ticket. We ll do drawings for prizes within the first week of school. The grade level, assigned summer reading book can be counted as one of the three books read. * If students read 3 books and return the book forms, they will be invited to a special Literary Breakfast with Dr. Souza one morning during the second week of school. We will also be offering a summer math incentive for the TenMarks Summer Math Program. Research shows that most children lose 2-3 months of math learning over the summer. TenMarks is designed to help them reverse this summer loss. For every 10 lessons completed, students will earn a raffle ticket for prizes to be raffled off the first week of school. In addition, any student who completes the 10 sessions will be invited to the breakfast with Dr. Souza. Students will need to return a printout of sessions completed.
