Acquire an understanding of studio business practices including portfolio development, creating your web presence, social media integration, client development, copyright basics, use of model releases, licensing your images for revenue, combating infringement and more. Final Grades Are Calculate By The Following Points System: 1. Student Participation, Conduct & Attendance: 10 points 2. Photo Projects: 80 points 3. Business Of Photography Exams: 30 points 4. Final: 30 points 150 total points available Course grades of A, B, C and D are based on a minimum of 90%, 80%, 70% and 60%, respectively of the total number points possible. Overview & Course Requirements: 1) Student Participation, Conduct & Attendance (10 points): Regular attendance is expected and imperative. One excused absence for medical or a family emergency is allowed. Additional absences, excused or unexcused, will result in a significantly lower final grade. Arriving late, leaving early or coming to class unprepared without materials will be recorded as one-half absence. All students are expected to participate in and contribute to group discussions, lab, critique, and other classroom activities. Students must process and print their own images unless instructed otherwise. The majority of this work must be produced during class lab time.
3 Team Work, Studio Shoot Around: These will center on improving technical skills while working in a group environment. Each Shoot Around requires you to work in teams to foster the development of leadership, communication and problem solving skills while engaging in a particular learning exercise. The class will be conducted in an environment of mutual respect. You re your development is reliant on peer review and understanding that growth in the art comes at different times and in different ways from each artist. Students who violate this agreement will be asked to leave resulting in 0 credit for the days participation, conduct and attendance grades. Students must abide by the student conduct code defined by CSUN. Close-toed shoes must be worn in the studio at all times. Students coming to class with inappropriate footwear will not be allowed to work in the studio. Smoke, fire, fog, candles, and incense are not allowed in the studio! Outside models must not use, move, or help with equipment. 2) Photo Projects: (Four Projects, 20 points each, 80 total) ALL students will produce and be evaluated on four projects. Producing images are at the heartbeat of any photographer, so please have fun shooting! Students are expected to build a studio lighting photography portfolio with a specific specialization. You are encouraged to find projects that interest you as a person/artist so that you are excited to get to work. Such projects can be portrait series that are typically found in publications or used by companies, or you may shoot commercially oriented projects revolving around fashion or themes (these are only meant as examples!) 455B Students: You are required to shoot 3 of the 5 projects in class during project production periods. 455C Students: You are required to shoot 2 of the 5 projects in class during project production periods. Projects will be photographed in Manuel Mode only & recorded in RAW format. Projects not photographed in class will be photographed independently, either in the studio outside of class hours and/or on location. Each project requires a completed project proposal form (see attached) and proposal meeting with the instructor. You will be evaluated on how well you executed your proposal. Incomplete/late proposals and/or missed meetings result in a lower grade. A guide for turning in projects and a project proposal form are included in this document. Assessment and Evaluation of Projects: Students must be present in class and ON TIME to turn in class projects and assignments. Absolutely no work will be accepted via , in faculty mailboxes, or under classroom/lab/office doors.
4 Students must print their images and display them in a portfolio binder. Consider printing challenges in the CSUN photo lab and or technical challenges arising from the use of PS or LR as you plan time to execute/deliver your project since issues arising from either are not considered valid excuses for late projects. Please consider preparation time as part of your project as this is a very practical approach in the real world. Clients expect images at a particular time and you need to learn to deliver on time. Challenging yourself to forego what you already excel at while trying to learn new and creative approaches is encouraged and supported. The student is responsible for including required digital files on an appropriately labeled USB drive. Missing digital files is equal to NOT turning in the project. Late projects will be accepted up to one week after the original due date and will result in one full grade reduction; however, late final projects and final portfolios will not be accepted. Projects will be evaluated using the following criteria: Effort & Attitude (4 points): Was the student present during studio time/shoot arounds? Did the student support classmates in the execution of the project? Was the project turned in on time? Did the student fulfill the project guidelines? Did the student work give a full effort? Was the student respectful and cooperative to peers, lab technicians, and instructors during the production of the project? Technical skills (6 points): At what level did the student exhibit technical skill? Was the student successful at executing interesting lighting techniques? Aesthetics (5 points): Did the student experiment with different approaches to exposure, design, color and composition? Does the image draw an emotional reaction that goes beyond technical skills? Does the image engage the viewer visually? This category transcends just the technical skills to consider the overall appeal of the photograph to the viewer. Concept (5 points): Does the image communicate the concept as proposed by the photographer? 3) Business Of Photography Exams: (3 Exams, 10 points each, 30 total) Exams that draw on "Business of Photography" lectures will comprise a part of your grade. More importantly, understanding these practices is incredibly vital to successfully transitioning from a university student to a professional photographer. Please attend class sessions and take notes. Exams will draw 100% from lecture material. 4) Final: (30 points) A final portfolio will be required for the final exam. All students are required to attend the final exam. Recommended Photographic Supply Stores
