1 Main Topic 8: Entertainment Lesson 53: Art/Museum Exhibitions (20-25 minutes) Today, you will: 1. Learn useful vocabulary related to ART/MUSEUM EXHIBITIONS. 2. Review Verb Tenses Part 2 (Basic Present). I. VOCABULARY Exercise 1: What s the meaning? (5-6 minutes) Choose the meaning of the underlined words from the choices that follow. Then practice using the words in your own sentences. 1. The painter used his imagination to create this masterpiece. a. An artist who uses pen b. An artist who uses a camera c. 3 Exercise 2: What s the word? (5-7 minutes) Read the following dialog with your tutor and try to use context clues to fill in the blanks with the most appropriate word. You can find the missing word from the pool of words at the bottom. Dr. Suzuki is welcomed inside an art gallery by the artist Hiroshi. Hiroshi: Good morning, Dr. Suzuki. I am Hiroshi. Welcome to the Hiroshi Art Gallery. I have been expecting you. Dr Suzuki: Thank you, Mr. Hiroshi. As (1) of the Takara Museum, I am in charge of the acquisition and care of art pieces in our museum. The paintings in your gallery have captured my interest. Hiroshi: Yes, I was very excited when I received your message last week that you were coming. I have heard about the (2) you are in and I respect what you do there. Dr Suzuki: Thank you, you are very kind. Hiroshi: Most of my paintings are on display down the (3). We can start the tour now if you want. Dr Suzuki: Very good. We can look at the paintings now and have the interview later. I need to write a short (4) of the artist. 4 II. GRAMMAR REVIEW: Topic: Verb Tenses Part 2 (Basic Present) (5-6 minutes) The Basic Present tense expresses an unchanging, repeated, or recurring action (ex. John drives a taxi.) or situation that exists only now (ex. Sara is happy.). It can also represent a widespread truth (ex. The sun sets in the west.). The basic present tense is achieved when the main verb or be-verb is added directly after the subject: Subject + predicate (includes main verb/be-verb). We also add -s to the main verb if the subject is 3 rd person singular (he, she, and it). Remember: An auxiliary verb (do/does) is not used unless the sentence is negative or interrogative. The auxiliary in a negative sentence is placed between the subject and the main verb. Examples: Subject + Predicate (includes main verb) Subject Auxiliary Predicate Main Verb I, you, we, they like milk. He, she, it likes coffee. I, you, we, they do not like chocolate. He, she, it does not like wine. Subject + Predicate (includes be-verb) Subject Predicate Be- Verb I am Japanese. You, we, they are Filipino. He, she, it is old. 4
