1 C P T I O N apid ecall Division Children will need to explore doubling / halving in a variety of practical contexts (eg cooking, shopping, role play). Sorting activities. Sharing activities embedded in everyday routines e.g. snack time ~ sharing toast out equally, pouring 6 drinks out for each group, preparing fruit and placing equal amounts on plates. Halves of even numbers to 10 (Children still need to explore halving in a practical contexts before moving to more abstract understanding) Show Steve the Spider and Tim the Tarantula. How many pairs of socks will Steve/Tim need to keep their feet warm? Vary by having no socks on, or 1, 2 or 3 pairs. Show 10 pairs of jumbled up socks on the washing line, sort into pairs and then discuss how many children will be able to wear clean socks today? How do you know? Vary amount. Sorting a variety objects into pots can they be shared fairly? How many are left over? Shuffle number cards (2, 4, 6, 8 and 10). Place face down. eveal a card and say what is half of that number. (e.g. half of 6 is 3 and double 3 is 6 ). apid recall of halves. My double is ten. What number did I start with? Bingo finding halves/number fans for halves. On the first page select the type of numbers that you want to work with. Then use spreadsheet to randomly generate numbers to be halved (or doubled) and these can be checked.
2 Derive / recall facts for 2, 5 and 10 tables Provide everyday arrays (e.g. cake tray, egg box, seed tray). Use x / facts to describe the array. Shuffle digit cards (1-9). Place in a pile face down. Turn over one card and say multiplication fact for, say, the 10 times table. ach time, say the related division fact. epeat for each card in the pile. Give the product (say, 20) and ask for possible number facts (using language of multiplication / division). Play dominoes in this game, the total of touching numbers must a multiple of 2. State related division fact. Derive / recall halves of even numbers to 20 oll 2 dice (1-6 and 2-12 even numbers only). Multiply the two digits and half the number. What are the possibilities? Which numbers won t divide exactly in half by a whole number? Why? Is there a pattern? Give the number that is a half of a mystery number. What number are we looking for? Convince me. What number are we looking for? Convince me.
