5 Informa s 8 th Annual Canadian Fall Outlook Conference November 18-19, 2004 Guest Speakers Course Grains Outlook Dwayne Lee, Grain Market Analyst, Canadian Wheat Board, Winnipeg, MB Dwayne Lee is the Grain Market Analyst in the Market Analysis Department of the Canadian Wheat Board (CWB). In this capacity, he is responsible for overall analysis and forecasting for global grain supply, demand and trade, wheat price forecasting, and following and analyzing ongoing developments in the grain situations in Canada, the U.S. and Australia. Prior to joining the CWB in June 2000, Dwayne worked for Saskatchewan Wheat Pool as a Grain Marketing Coordinator. He has also been a research assistant at the University of Saskatchewan. Dwayne holds a Master of Science degree and a Bachelor of Science degree (in Agricultural Economics) from the University of Saskatchewan. Future Grain Policies for Western Grain Nithi Govindasamy, Member of Policy Secretariat, AB Ag, Food & Rural Development, Edmonton, AB Nithi is currently a Member of the Policy Secretariat of Alberta Agriculture, Food and Rural Development, responsible for Domestic Policy issues including grain marketing. Over the course of the last year, he has been integrally involved in the BSE issue, taking the lead on trade issues on behalf of Alberta Agriculture. Nithi graduated from the University of Alberta in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture. He then returned to Malaysia where he worked with the Department of Agriculture as a District Agriculturalist and later as Regional Director, responsible for all agricultural extension activities. He was also responsible for large-scale irrigation projects funded by the Work Bank. Nithi returned to Canada in 1981 where he obtained his Master of Science degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Alberta in He has been with Alberta Agriculture since Prior to his present responsibilities, Nithi served as a Resource Economist, Trade Statistician and Provincial Farm Income Specialist with the Department s Economic Services Division. He also spent two years as the Director of the International Governance Office, with responsibilities for coordinating the Alberta government s involvement in international development projects. Since 1987, Nithi has been actively involved with agricultural trade and policy issues.
6 Future Challenges and Opportunities Facing the Winnipeg Commodity Exchange Will Hill, Vice President, Winnipeg Commodity Exchange, Winnipeg, MB Will Hill is Senior Vice President of Winnipeg Commodity Exchange Inc. He has overall responsibility for developing long term marketing and corporate development strategies. Mr. Hill has 22 years experience in the Canadian grain industry; eight years at the senior executive level. Most recently Mr. Hill was Senior Vice President, Grain Group at Saskatchewan Wheat Pool. Prior to that he was Managing Director, Merchandising and Transportation at United Grain Growers. Mr. Hill has been a Board member of various industry related organizations including Benson Quinn-GMS Inc., Western Grain Elevator Association and Winnipeg Commodity Exchange. Current and Emerging Trends in Ontario Agriculture John DePutter, President, DePutter Publishing, London, ON John DePutter has been involved with commodity markets for 26 years. John was raised on a beef and cash crop farm in Southwestern Ontario. After graduating from the University of Western Ontario in London and working as Secretary Manager for the Middlesex Federation of Agriculture, he became a farm broadcaster for CFPL Radio. He founded DePutter Publishing Ltd. in 1981 and launched the AG-ALERT farm market advisory service in 1982, which continues to offer farmers in Ontario and other Eastern Canadian areas with daily commodity market analysis and recommendations. Also on the DePutter Publishing Ltd. product list are Good Morning Prairies, a daily farm news Internet clipping service; a weekly column seen in the Winnipeg-based Wild Oats market advisory; newsletters for clients of BASF and Syngenta; and consulting and informational services for a broad range of clients spanning Canada. John has spoken across the country and is widely known for his depth of knowledge with respect to commodity market analysis and risk management. The Current Status and Possible Trends for Brewers Jim Venn, Independent Consultant, FJV Consulting, Winnipeg, MB Jim Venn has been involved in agri business for over 23 years having been CEO and a Director of Dominion Malting until Jim sat as a director on the board of the (BMBRI) Brewing And Malting Barley Research Institute, as well as on the Senior Grain Transportation Committee. He was a member and officer of the Malting Industry Association of Canada; Member-Winnipeg Commodity Exchange and sat on various ad hoc committees including the CWB committee responsible for the development of the current contract system replacing the old permit system. Jim has traveled internationally representing Dominion Malt and promoted Canadian Malting Barley in various markets - notably making the first ever sale of malt from Canada to Chile. Mr Venn was educated in Calgary and Winnipeg taking Business Administration and Economics. He has attended and given talks at various GIGI courses including the 3rd International Malt and Malt Barley Program. He is the principal in his own consulting business located in Winnipeg, FJV Consulting, working with brewing, malting and other agri and non agri business concerns in areas of purchasing, RFQ development, organizational strategic planning, policy development, general management, logistics and marketing.
7 Global Livestock Issues Steve Kay, Editor & Publisher, Cattle Buyers Weekly, Petaluma, CA Steve Kay is Editor and Publisher of Cattle Buyers Weekly, a weekly marketing and business newsletter for the North American meat industry. CBW is widely read throughout the continent. It also has readers in South America, Europe, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand. CBW is in its 15th year of publication. Steve also writes a monthly column called "Kay's Korner" for the Western Livestock Journal and is Contributing Editor to Meat & Poultry magazine. He also writes a monthly market outlook for the National Meat Association's Lean Trimmings newsletter. Kay is widely quoted in national and regional daily newspapers and weekly news magazines, including the Wall Street Journal, Business Week, Forbes and Fortune and by the Reuters and Associated Press news agencies. He has also appeared on National Public Radio, Australian Broadcasting Corporation programs and numerous other radio stations. He also regularly addresses industry groups in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand on the state of the North American meat and livestock industry. Kay has specialized in writing about the livestock and meat industries worldwide for 30 years. He grew up on a dairy/beef farm on the South Island of New Zealand. Informa Economics Speakers Cattle and Beef Outlook Rick Andersen, Senior Vice-President, Informa Economics, Inc., Memphis, TN Dr. Andersen's responsibilities include research, client service and consulting with the Informa Economics livestock, meat, poultry and dairy based clients. Prior to joining the company, Dr. Andersen was a regional extension economist for the Alberta Agriculture Department, a livestock market analyst and policy advisor to the Alberta Minister of Agriculture, and a research economist for Cook Industries, Inc. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees in agriculture from the University of Alberta and his doctorate degree in agricultural economics from The Ohio State University. Hogs and Pork Outlook Ron Gietz, Vice-President, Informa Economics, Inc., Memphis, TN Mr. Gietz is responsible for research and market analysis in the pork industry. He works closely with many of the largest producers and consumers of pork and pork products in North America. He has helped launch and service MarginQuest, providing risk management services to North American hog producers. Mr. Gietz came to the company from Alberta Agriculture where he held positions as the provincial livestock market analyst and market economist. While there, Mr. Gietz conducted market analyses of meat and livestock as well as grains and forages. Prior to joining Alberta Agriculture, Mr. Gietz worked in the range management section of the Alberta Forest Service. He received his bachelor's degree in agriculture and his master's degree in agricultural economics from the University of Alberta.
8 Wheat; Oilseeds Outlook Dave Reimann, Senior Analyst, Informa Economics, Inc., Winnipeg, MB Mr. Reimann, working out of the Informa Economics Winnipeg office, is primarily responsible for core Canadian grain analysis and reporting, covering Canadian wheat, barley, canola, oats and specialty crops such as peas and lentils. Prior to joining the company, Mr. Reimann was Manager of Commercial Accounts and Floor Trading Operations of Benson Quinn--GMS Inc., Winnipeg. During his 4 1/2 years at Benson Quinn, he oversaw the nearterm and long-term market research and analysis, managed the daily operations of the Winnipeg trading floor, and oversaw commercial client services. Before his work at Benson Quinn, Mr. Reimann spent two years as senior market analyst for United Grain Growers (UGG) in Winnipeg. Prior to his work at UGG, Mr. Reimann spent eight years as an independent commodity broker, was a hedging analyst for three years at CSP Foods/Manitoba Pool Elevators, and for seven years was with Pioneer Grain where he held various positions including supervisor of block shipping. Mr. Reimann received a diploma in business administration from the Red River Community College, Winnipeg. He also completed several individual business-related courses and fulfilled course work at the Canadian Securities Institute. Coarse Grains; Wheat; Oilseeds Outlook Rob Westmoreland, Executive Vice-President, Informa Economics, Inc., Memphis, TN Mr. Westmoreland's responsibilities include overseeing the Informa Economics grains, oilseeds, and other crop and food ingredient research and analyses functions and client services. Previously, Mr. Westmoreland was group vice president and general manager of Pillsbury Industrial Foods.
