Students at Thousand Oaks High School drew on their backpacks, on their shoes, on notebook paper and even on themselves. Editor-in-chief Brandie Warr recognized this trend and suggested the theme Scratch work to describe the school year. In addition to the literal meaning of scratch work as doodles and drawings, Thousand Oaks High school was in a scratch work phase of development. A new administration threw the school into a Scratch work phase of planning and figuring things out. A black cover with subtle green and blue scratched designs provides balance to the edginess of the theme and the designs inside.
Green endsheets with layers of student handwriting and doodles provide contrast to the dark cover and an interesting background for a complete table of contents. This front endsheet provides a gentle transition into the book and a complete list of every story in the book. Handwritten comments about selected stories add an extra layer of Scratch work to this endsheet.
The blue and green scratch work design from the cover repeats on the title page, but this time with a white background. The font on the cover also repeats, setting up a clear visual style for the 2010 Lancer Legend. Clean, sans serif fonts and a fair amount of white space help keep the Scratch work from overwhelming the reader.
The background image from the endsheets repeats on the opening spread. This time, much darker doodles are overlaid on the left page. The opening copy, set in a handwriting font, is the chatter inside a yearbook student s brain as she takes a math test. Her thoughts about coming up with a theme are interspersed with thoughts about the doodles she s drawing on her scratch paper. Wait, that s it! That is the theme! The summation of our whole time here is all of those little things we did to reach the end and to graduate, the copy reads. All the steps and tiresome work, immersed with the doodles that made our days brighter and the tests more interesting that s the theme! This is the scratch work of our lives.
The scratch work design details become subtler as readers progress further into the 2010 Lancer Legend. Division pages feature strong dominant photos and doodles scanned from real student papers. Subtle scratch work frames the photo and the division copy. Notice that here the copy is set in a sans serif font, instead of a decorative handwriting font. The staff reserved handwriting fonts for titles and for opening and closing copy.
Scratch work was a fitting theme for the school year at Thousand Oaks High School for a couple of reasons. First, the school was adjusting to a new administration, creating a planning phase of development. Second, students at the school truly did love to doodle. This spread covers the literal scratch work made by students at the school. Photos on the left side of the spread correspond with mini-profiles of students who love to draw.
Traditional designs are updated with modern fonts and Scratch work details inside the Lancer Legend. This combination of classic design, complete with eyeliners, large dominant photos and edgy graphic elements, creates fun, interesting, theme-driven design. Notice the hand-drawn diagram of a left turn at the bottom right of this spread. Diagrams like this appear throughout the book, especially in the sports section, to show some of the real life ways students at Thousand Oaks High School use Scratch work in their everyday lives.
The best division copy both develops the theme and provides facts about the year. This academics divider s copy does just that. Information about T-shirts worn by a calculus class, a play-acting assignment in sophomore English class and tasting historically significant foods in history class help introduce the Mind games section of the 2010 Lancer Legend. Notice that the design stays consistent with other divider spreads in this book, but that a strong photo and a section-related doodle make this spread unique.
The Lancer Legend staff found a place for the theme Scratch work on every page of its book. This index spread includes quotes about doodles and actual doodles from students. Consistent font usage and the repetition of the green color from the endsheets and throughout the book also help this spread connect with the rest of the book.
The last spread is a mirror image of the opening spread. This closing copy points out that the most important moments of high school might not have been the same moments that get students into college. Instead, the Lancer Legend asserts, the important moments are the ones in between, when students are expressing themselves. Expressing our thoughts. Expressing ourselves, the closing copy reads. Making all the little moments matter. Making it mean something in the end. This is the scratch work of our lives.
