GIMP Simple Animation Tutorial Banner size: 690 x 200 transparent background layer There are really two parts to making an animated banner. The first is to set up the banner all the components besides the animation. The next is to add the animation elements. Step 1: Open image as layer I started with this one (one of my own screen caps I can load it to PB and provide a link if you want to use it too) Use the scale tool to resize it I went for height 300 and placed it in the middle. It leaves some transparent background on either side but we ll do something with that in step 3. Step 2: Tweak the image as you see fit. I use these instructions myself and find for most pics they really improve the colour and contrast.
Any duplicated layers need to be merged back into one note if you followed the linked instructions start merging your layers from the bottom two. Keep doing that until you have one picture layer. If you start at the top it messes the image up (because of what mode each layer is set to). Lastly, set the size of your picture layer to the image size. Image now looks like this: Step 3: filling the rest of the background Use the bucket tool to fill the Background layer with blue I used 04276b initially. This is something you can adjust later so don t worry too much as long as you have a shade close to what you want so you can judge whether you like it after we do the next bit. Put the Background layer on top of the picture layer. Open this image as a layer and put it on top of the background layer set it to Overlay, 100% You can find this here QTextures Free Quality Textures. Our banner should now look like this:
Click on the Background layer to make that the active layer. Select the lasso tool, no feathering. I zoomed to 200% here too, just to be able to see better. We re going to select the middle section, leaving curtains on either side of our image to fill those empty spaces. We want to follow a line on the fabric so that it looks like a curtain rather than a straight line. I started on the right hand side at the top, selected along my first curtain line and then carried it across to the other side: Looks something like this. Then I selected up the left hand side, again following another curtain line to the top. Looks something like this:
Now join back to the first selection point and your selection will be complete. Looks like this (back to 100%): Then press delete to get rid of the middle on the background layer. Now looks like this:
Now, with the selection still active, click on the textured-crinkled-lines layer, and press delete again, to get rid of the middle of the texture layer. Looks like this: Select None to turn off the selection. This looked okay but I wanted a bit of definition on the edges of the curtain, so I decided to add an outline to the edges of the curtains. Right click on the Background layer, and select Alpha to Selection.
From the Select menu, Grow 2. Then Layer, New Layer call it something meaningful and make sure it s set to Transparency. Your layer will look something like this you won t be able to tell it apart from the original! With the selection still active, use the Bucket tool and fill with Black.
Then move this layer below the original Background layer and set the Opacity to around 70%. Select None to turn off the selection. Our banner now looks something like this: At this point you might decide you don t like how blue the curtains are you can fix this by doing Alpha to Selection on the Background layer and then using the bucket tool to fill the selection with different colours (you ll have to fill both sides separately). You could also use Colorize from the Color menu and adjust the Hue, Saturation and Lightness until you like what you see this way allows for more experimentation without having to Undo, but the first way gives you more control over what colours you try and you can start from the colour you have and make small changes. I ended up using the first method on the Background layer changed it to colour 031b4b. I then selected the textured-crinkled-lines layer and Colorized it because the brown tone was messing with the shade of blue I wanted. The settings I used for that were:
So now my image looks like this: Step 4: Text Select the Text tool and click where you want your text to go I used one layer for both words so that I could quickly experiment with the font and colour and size. My starting point I ve gone for the Angelic War font. You can find it here I m never happy with solid colours from the palette for text so I m going to use the Alpha to Selection function again to select the text and use the Gradient tool to fill the selection with shifting colour. I ve previously written instructions for this see - the second document on that page. You can also use the Brush tool to fill the text with colours or brush effects. Mine ended up looking like this:
The edges of the text lose sharpness when you change the colour like this. On the text layer, Alpha to Selection, Select Grow 1, New Layer (like we did to put the edges onto the curtains) Use the bucket tool to fill the new layer (the selection should still be active) with black: Then Select None, and move the text outline layer below the text layer. The banner now looks like this:
OKAY! So that s part one done we now have the base banner and can begin adding our Animation elements. I save my project as a new project at this point and add in the word Animated to the filename just so I can return to the base version if need be, and so I know which GIMP files produce animated banners. Step 5: Animation Flatten Image so you only have one layer. Make a new layer, transparent, and call it Heart. I have a brush I made a while back that I used for the hearts you can download it from here ( and put the file into the Brushes folder. Mine is located as follows: Computer (c:/) There might be other heart brushes around, or you can find an image that you like. The main requirements are that the image consist only of the heart no background. The rest must be transparent. I wanted the animation to be subtle so I set the brush size to 0.2 and in the Heart layer, clicked once ending up with this: I made the hearts golden right click on the heart layer, Alpha to Selection. Then choose the Sparks brush (I think this one comes with GIMP) and brush over the hearts until you are happy with how it looks.
Select None and make your picture layer visible again. This is going to be the base look for the animation. We ll create more layers to add a building glow to the hearts that resets in a repeating loop. Alpha to Selection on the heart layer, Select Grow by 3, New Layer Fill the selection with blue shade , and then Select None, and move the new layer below the Heart layer.
Filters Blur Gaussian Blur settings are up to you but for this I usually choose Horizontal and Vertical both = Gives you this: Then Alpha to Selection on the heart layer again, Select Grow by 2, New Layer
Fill the selection with white, and then Select None, and move the new layer below the Heart layer. Filters Blur Gaussian Blur this time I chose Horizontal and Vertical both = 10.0 You should have four layers and an image that looks like this: Now that we have the basic elements of animation, the next step is to duplicate layers so that each step in the animation has all the preceding layers too. First, duplicate the heart layer and move it to sit just above the base picture layer. Duplicate the heart glow layer and move it below the heart copy layer. Make all the other layers not visible. You should have these layers: Merge Down the heart copy and the heart glow layers into one layer. Double click on the layer title to change the layer name because it s going to be important to keep track of these layers. I named mine Heart glow 1. Make the base picture layer not visible so you can see this new layer:
Hide the layer you just made, make your picture layer visible again. Duplicate the heart layer. Duplicate the heart glow layer twice. Move them all to sit just above the picture layer (see below for the order). You should now have these layers: Merge Down these three layers to one layer, rename the new layer heart glow 2. Hide the picture layer so you can see what it looks like. It s the same as the first one, just more glowy, and looks like this: Hide the layer you just made, make your picture layer visible again. Duplicate the heart layer. Duplicate the heart glow layer three times. Move them all to sit just above the picture layer (see below for the order). You should now have these layers:
Merge Down these four layers to one layer, rename the new layer heart glow 3. Hide the picture layer so you can see what it looks like. It s the same as the second one, just more glowy again, and looks like this: Hide the layer you just made, make your picture layer visible again. Duplicate the heart layer. Duplicate the heart glow layer twice times. You already have the heart glow white layer ready to go. Move the layers you have to sit just above the picture layer in the same order as I have here:
Merge Down these five layers to one layer, rename the new layer heart glow 4. Hide the picture layer so you can see what it looks like. It s the same as the third one, with white glow added, and looks like this: Now rearrange all the layers so they are in the right order for animation. Like this: Now we need to put the background on each of these heart glow layers. Duplicate the base picture layer four times and arrange layers like this:
Now we have to merge each of the heart layers with a base picture layer. You ll have to rename them each time you do this as well because it takes the layer name of the lowest layer. I started at the bottom, so the first merge was the heart layer and the first picture layer, leaving me with these layers: Repeat that another four times and you end up with these layers: This is what each layer looks like by itself: Heart:
Heart glow 1: Heart glow 2: Heart glow 3: Heart glow 4: Now comes the fun part making this animated! All we have to do is to change the layer titles to include how long each is to be displayed. When you do an animation from scratch this takes some trial and error to see if you like the timing I ll save you that time for this one and just tell you what I ended up with. Rename your layers like this:
To see what this looks like as an animation, Filters, Animation, Playback: Gives you the following screen. Just press play to watch your animation.
Almost there! Because we have five layers, the resulting file is going to be big. We can reduce that by optimizing our layers. Filters, Animation, Optimize (for GIF): This will create a new Untitled file that looks like the following. The optimization takes out duplication between layers. If you look closely at the layers you ll see it looks like it s removed most of the background image. You might wonder here if we could have just skipped the step where we added the base picture. Could we just have added the word combine when we added the timing for each layer? I experimented with that and discovered that it makes a difference the fading of the glow to the edges in each layer was affected and resulted in a quite different effect.
Time to save this new file. File, Save and then pick the gif file type. When you click Save you ll get the following: Choose Save as Animation.
Then click on Export, which gives you this: Make sure Loop forever is selected. Click Save and that s it you re done!
