2 Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV) Link Super Transceiver All students gain experience in: Engineering Project Development Team problem solving Project management Documentation and reporting Multidiscipline design and testing

3 Dr. Katz and Prof. Flynn act as upper management. Two groups, each with six students. Each team will elect a group leader. Point of contact with faculty Chair of student meetings Manages day-to-day operation of the group.

4 Dr. Katz and Prof. Flynn will give each group a basic specification for their project. Each group will augment and develop the specifications in detail. Each group will be responsible for ensuring specifications are reasonable given the time and materials available to the group.

5 Each group will develop a realistic timeline to complete their project including all testing and documentation by the end of the Fall Semester Timeline may be adjusted as project proceeds, with good reason. Timeline to include following milestones: Preliminary Design Review Final Design Review Final Review and Acceptance Test

6 All students must attend weekly Tuesday morning meetings. Each group will report on project status: Problems solved in past week New problems encountered Demonstrations of current capabilities/features Students from both projects will comment and share information to encourage learning between the two groups.

7 Groups are required to conform to ALL government regulations regarding the frequencies they are using. Obtain necessary licensing Research rules and regulations regarding signal power, bandwidth, identification, etc.

8 Ongoing documentation is required. Problems encountered and solutions Failures and successes Test results

9 Final Documentation, including, but not limited to: Procedures Software and code listings Schematics Test results, including original test data Documentation is for future groups building on this year s experience.

10 Each group will develop testing to prove the performance of their project to specification. Testing should be traceable to accepted standards and conform with current measurement practice.

12 Data link between UAV and ground station Using mhz amateur radio band. Bandwidth and mode conform to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules. Air unit completely self-contained using SDR. Ground unit also uses SDR. Maximum range (at given bit error rate) to be determined by group.

13 Link will be bi-directional Uplink to UAV will be commands to interrogate air unit for data. Downlink will include: Images from on-board camera GPS vehicle location information Vehicle status information (battery voltage, temperature, etc.)

14 Uplink commands will be capable of controlling link frequency, bandwidth, data rate and possibly mode. Phone home feature will return UAV transceiver to default mode, frequency, bandwidth and data rate in the event of loss of link. Link will be pinged periodically to assess link health.

15 Ground Station will have GUI interface to display: Raw downlink data Link health Signal strength Images from UAV UAV location (Latitude/Longitude or map) Interrogation command controls.

16 Ground Station (cont d) Command status (answered, ignored or garbled) Panoramic display of bandwidth to identify possible interfering signals

18 Design and implement transceiver in high frequency (HF) amateur radio bands 1.8 to 29.7 mhz using SDR. Transceiver will have an easy to use GUI interface intuitively understandable to most amateur radio operators. Use following transceivers as benchmarks: ICOM IC7700, IC7800, IC756PROIII Yaesu FT-2000, FTDX-9000 Kenwood TS-2000

19 Transceiver shall be capable of transmitting and receiving in the following modes: CW or Morse Code Single Sideband (upper and lower) Amplitude Modulation (AM) Frequency Modulation (FM) Current digital modes in use Digital Voice modes if possible

20 Display will have at minimum: Received signal strength Transmitted signal power Receive bandwidth Mode Volume Transmit Frequency Receive Frequency RF gain/attenuations Panoramic display of frequency in use plus surrounding frequencies

21 The group will provide complete operating instruction manual covering installation and operation. Manual shall be understandable to person with Technician Class License and limited understanding of SDR.

22 Transceiver shall conform to current FCC regulations regarding: Spurious emissions Harmonic suppression Transmitted bandwidth

23 Complete specifications for project Begin timeline Prepare first presentation to both groups showing project status, specifications and timeline
