1 Due Date: Friday 3rd November 2017 YEAR 9 Photography and Digital Imaging Portraits Mark: /100 Weighting: 35% Assessment Name: Camera Project (note change from assessment schedule) SYLLABUS OUTCOMES TO BE ASSESSED: 5.1. develops range and autonomy in selecting and applying photographic and digital conventions and procedures to make photographic and digital works 5.2. makes photographic and digital works informed by their understanding of the function of and relationships between artist artwork world audience 5.5 makes informed choices to develop and extend concepts and different meanings in their photographic and digital work 5.10 constructs different critical and historical accounts of photographic and digital works DIRECTIVES TO BE ASSESSED: Develops: grow or expand Makes: to produce; cause to exist or happen Constructs: make; build; put together items or arguments TASK DESCRIPTION: There are four parts to this assessment task: Part A: Darkroom Printing Techniques (enlarged, cropped, negative image) Part B: Photographic Process Diary (PPD) Part C: Loretta Lux Inspired Portraits (storyboard, negatives, print) Part D: Dorothea Lange Case Study All work in this assessment task should be completed in class although you may take your Photographic Process Diary (PPD) home to complete activities presented in class.your PPD needs to be well presented, organised and maintained. Part A: Darkroom Printing Techniques; Develop autonomy in selecting and applying various photographic conventions and procedures to make a series of photographic works reflecting a variety of darkroom techniques. Submit the following successful photographs in your black portfolio for assessment. Process notes, annotated test strips and unsuccessful prints, submit in your photographic process diary. Part A: Darkroom Printing Techniques; 1. Enlarged print: Use joiner head shots film, print an enlarged photograph of your best negative. Take into consideration; tonal range, image focus, composition of subject and print quality. 2. Cropped print: Use joiner head shots film, print a cropped image of the same negative. Take into consideration; tonal range, image focus, framing of subject and print quality. 3. Cropped print, negative image: Use cropped print to produce a negative image, take into consideration tonal range and quality of print. Part B: Photographic Process Diary (PPD); Develop autonomy in selecting and applying various photographic conventions and procedures. Submit all processes notes, annotated test strips and unsuccessful prints, in your photographic process diary (PPD). 1
2 Part C: Loretta Lux Inspired Portraits; Activities reflect students ability to make photographic and digital works informed by their understanding of the Students make informed choices to develop and extend concepts and different meanings in their photographic work. Submit activities 1 and 2 in your photographic process diary (PPD). Submit a successful portrait print (head and hands) in your black portfolio. Part C: Loretta Lux Inspired Portraits; 1. Storyboard: 6 images, which reflect Loretta Lux visual concepts of specifically using body language, with a focus on hands and a lack of facial expression in her subjects to engage an audience interpretation. Number each image and write a potential meaning underneath. 2. Portrait images: shoot and develop a 35mm film of 6 portrait shots (head and hands) inspired by Loretta Lux children portraits.utilise her techniques of body language, specifically hands and a lack of facial expression. Students interpret her work and make images of their own meanings. 3. Portrait print: Print one enlarged photograph of your best portrait image from the 6 negatives (head and hands). Take into consideration; concept idea, tonal range, image focus, composition of subject and final print quality. Part D: Dorothea Lange Case Study; Students construct different critical and historical accounts of photographic works. Submit task on format provided. Part D: Dorothea Lange critical and historical study: 1. Read the provided Dorothea Lange text, highlight key terms and information. 2. Copy conceptual framework, vocabulary and definitions. 3. Answer critical historical questions, acknowledge concepts and influences of documentary photography. Use full sentences and correct sentence structure. 2
3 ASSESSMENT CRITERIA STUDENT CHECKLIST: All work in this assessment task should be completed in class although you may take your photographic process diary (PPD) home to complete activities presented in class. Your PPD and black portfolio both need to be well organised and maintained. Ensure any missed work is caught up and presented in PPD or portfolio (see teacher on return to complete set work). Part A: Darkroom Printmaking Techniques (joiner negatives) (40 Marks) Submit the following photography activities of your best print in your black portfolio; 1. Enlarged print 2. Cropped print 3. Cropped print, negative image Part B: Photographic Process Diary (PPD) (10 Marks) Submit the following photography activities in your photographic process diary; 1. Maintain an accurate record of all bookwork completed in class. 2. Ensure all test strips and lead up work is presented in your photographic process diary (PPD) with detailed process notes to accompany each activity. 3. All unsuccessful printed images, annotate and explain why the image is not suitable. 4. You are encouraged to use your initiative in working beyond the guidelines of this task by completing additional work in your photography process diary, such as research, image development and experimentation. Part C: Loretta Lux Inspired Portrait Activities (30 Marks) Submit activities 1 and 2 in your photographic process diary (PPD). Activity 3 in your black portfolio; 1. Story board, 6 images (head and hands) 2. Portrait film in plastic negative carrier with name, 6 images (head and hands negatives) 3. Portrait print (head and hands negative) Part D: Dorothea Lange critical and historical study (20 Marks) Submit the following activities on the format provided; 1. Read text provided, highlight all key information. 2. Copy conceptual framework, vocabulary and definitions. 3. Answer critical and historical questions, acknowledge concepts and influences of documentary photography. Use full sentences and correct sentence structure. 3

Images reflect outstanding tonal qualities and clarity of image. Develops excellent range and autonomy in selecting and applying appropriate conventions and darkroom procedures to successfully process and print three excellent black and white images (joiner negatives); enlarged print, cropped print and cropped negative print. Most images reflect excellent tonal qualities and clarity of image. Develops appropriate range and autonomy in selecting and applying conventions and darkroom procedures to successfully process and print two sound black and white images (joiner negatives); enlarged print and cropped print. Images mostly reflect sound tonal qualities and in most parts clarity of image. Develops basic range and autonomy in selecting and applying conventions and darkroom procedures which show attempts to process and print a basic black and white image of an enlarged print (joiner negatives). Image reflects basic tonal qualities and some clarity of image.
