1 The Year of the Hangman falls into the category of alternate history. The whole point of an alternate history novel is to play with the facts a bit, to explore what might have happened if certain events in history had turned out differently. This novel focuses on what might have happened if the British won the Revolutionary War Required Novel Assignments: Daily Reading Self-directed Activities from Menu Book Conversations/Discussions Day 1: 1. Prologue and Read Chapters 1-2 (pgs. 3-25) 2. Discuss List Menu Investigation and determine which activities you would like to complete. Return tomorrow with parent signature. Day 2: 1. Small group discussion-summarize and character traits Ch. 1-2 Describe Creighton including some of his character traits. Include text evidence. Ex: carefree..paid little attention to his mother s warnings. 2. Read chapters 3-4 (pgs ) 3. Use List Menu to begin working on your activities. Day 3: 1. Small group discussion-summarize and share What advice would you give the main character about his most important problem? Do you think he would follow your advice? Why or why not? 2. Read chapters 5-6 (pgs )

2 Day 4: -summarize and share Is the setting of the book essential to the action, or could these events happen any time and place? Explain your answer. 2. Read chapters 7-9 (pgs. 80-1) 3. Work on your chosen activities. Day 5: -summarize and share If you could enter the book, what kind of character would you be and what would be your role in the story? 2. Read chapters -11 (pgs ) Day 6: In your group, create a report card for your character. Give him grades on honesty, perseverance, courage, self-confidence, and integrity. Explain the grades. 2. Read chapters (pgs )

3 Day 7: Make a connection between the book and another book you have read. Explain why this book makes you think of the other one. 2. Read chapters 14- (pgs ) 3. You should be halfway finished with your activities! Day 8: How do the characters in the book view the main character? Choose a secondary character, and talk about how that person would describe the main character. 2. Read chapters (pgs ) 3. Work on Menu activities. Day 9: Talk about three things you wish the author would clarify. What is confusing in the book? 2. Read chapters (pgs )

Day 11: Would you want the main character as a friend? Explain why or why not. 2. Read chapters and Author s Note (pgs ) 3. Continue working on activities. Check your due date to be certain you will finish on time and turn in your work.

5 Investigation Menu Guidelines 1. You may do as many of the activities as you can complete within the time period. 2. You may choose any combination of activities. 3. Your goal is 0 points. You may earn up to points extra credit. 4. You may be as creative as you like within the guidelines listed below. 5. You must show you plan to your teacher by the end of class on. 6. Activities may be turned in at any time during the working time period. They will be graded and recorded on this sheet as you continue to work, so keep it safe! Include page number, quote and your response to quote. Create a characterization flip book about 5 characters in your book. 20 Include their name, a picture, 3 character traits and a quote that demonstrates a trait. Make a map of the location where your book takes place. Be sure to color and label your map, provide a key and make a compass rose. Create a picture dictionary with five words from your novel. Be sure to use color. Include the word, the sentence from your novel where you found it, and another sentence using the word correctly. Perform an infomercial on your book about the American Revolution. Prepare and teach a minute classroom mini-lesson on either: The causes of the war, the events of the war, or the results of the war. Write an article for a newspaper reporting on a main event from your novel. Create a political cartoon about an event from the American Revolution. Be able to explain it to the class. Create a poem on the war from a main character s perspective about the Revolution. Be able to explain it to the class. Make a diorama or a mobile showing 5 key events from your novel. Make Vocabulary Flash Cards with the words provided. 25 Make a Crossword Puzzle with the Vocabulary Words provided. Create a bulletin board with 1 or 2 friends about the American Revolution. Write a play about 2-3 of the key events of your novel. Perform the play with a group of your friends. The play must be edited and typed. Make a problem/solution chart about your novel using a t-chart. Make a timeline of major events from your novel. You must illustrate each event and they must be written in complete sentences. Decorate a cereal box with each side of the box representing a different aspect of your novel. You might include a section about the author, the setting, the problem and solution, events, characters, or other literary devices used. Identify the theme, or central idea, of your novel. Then paint/draw a picture and choose a title that demonstrates that theme. Make 3-5 paper dolls of the main characters of your novel in the dress of the time period.
