The flat-head configuration, and heads designed to fit almost any diameter, permit available thrust to be exploited to the full. In addition, the cutters are easily rearranged or transferred to other positions for different button-row spacing. The heads are easy to transport in narrow sections and their unique design has paved the way for substantial increases in penetration rates and raise boring capacity. OPTIMUM PRODUCTIVITY IN ALL ROCK FORMATIONS Cutters with cemented carbide buttons are easily mounted in the saddles. The cutters can be positioned in certain patterns to give different spacing between the rows of cemented carbide buttons in order to suit different rock conditions. Accordingly, large row spacing is used for boring in soft rock and narrow row spacing is used in harder rock formations. Flexible spacing. HORIZONTAL BORING OF SEWAGE AND ESCAPE TUNNELS, WALK-WAYS AND CABLE TUNNELS The use of horizontal raise boring in civil engineering projects is a growing market. The benefits include less site excavation compared with TBM and reduced damage to the environment. Raise boring, combined with directional drilling, also secures the pilot hole direction and is a must for drilling in urban areas. Sandvik s reaming heads can be tailor-made to suit the particular project. 27 eet any specific needs DOWN BORING OF LARGE DIAMETER FILL HOLES Back-filling of stopes has traditionally been a time-consuming operation due to the limited hole size. Larger holes is a prerequisite in speeding up the cycle. Conventional raise boring is not an option due to non-access in the stope. However, a modified method has been introduced down boring with a pre-drilled pilot hole. The first step is to drill the pilot hole from an upper level down to the stope. The following step is to pull out the drill pipes and replace the pilot bit with a special reamer. Reaming starts from the upper level and the reamer is pushed and rotated downwards. The cuttings are forced by gravity and the rotation of the reamer and fall through the pre-drilled hole down to the stope. In order to improve cuttings removal, Sandvik, in close co-operation with customers and machine suppliers, has developed a special tailor-made reamer. Some of its features are: Modified profile for improved cuttings removal Well-balanced size and weight ratio to permit the use of a mechanical rod handler Special adaptor for drill pipe/reamer connection UPWARDS BLIND BORING OF SLOT RAISES Blind boring upwards is a method used when there is no access to the upper level and when conventional raise boring is no option. South African gold mines have used this method to drill ore passes up to the reef. In this context a new method is to drill the opening holes for blasting slot raises of normallly Ø meter in 0-0 metre lengths. In order to facilitate reamer handling, Sandvik has developed a special tailor-made reaming head.
