Why now is the best time to order any and all DNA tests. All the major testing companies are offering sales: 23 and Me, Ancestry, Family Tree DNA, My Heritage. (see more on page 2) DNA, FamilyTreeDNA Admin Conference & Holiday Specials CCGS upcoming programs, society contacts, area genealogy programs 3 4 Presented by LuAnne Jones LuAnne Jones has been interested in genealogy for 50 years. She began her research before information was available on computers, took a 25- year break to raise her family, and returned to discover information available on the internet as well as all the traditional records. She has one ancestor who arrived from Alsace in All her other ancestors arrived prior to the Revolutionary War. LuAnne really enjoys having DNA available and has been able to correspond with several living cousins that would have been extremely difficult to contact otherwise. We hope to see you there! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Happy New Year! Finding Your Immigrant Ancestor & Genetic Map of Ireland Genealogy Center Collections & Databases When you search for ancestors, you find great friends! 4 5 Editors Corner It s time once again for our annual holiday social. Everyone is invited to bring a special dish but that is not required. Come enjoy the camaraderie and a special program about DNA from our CCGS President LuAnne Jones. FamilyTreeDNA s is having a holiday sale so this is a perfect time for LuAnne s program. I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! May you be blessed throughout the holiday season. Thank you for your continued support. Merry Christmas & see you Wednesday night! Paula
2 Navigating FamilyTreeDNA Have you ordered your DNA tests? Why now is the best time to order any and all DNA tests. All the major testing companies are offering sales: 23 and Me, Ancestry, Family Tree DNA, My Heritage. Who should you ask to test? All the oldest relatives you can find. Each person has inherited different segments of DNA from each ancestor. Can show if you have Native American blood. Can show which areas of Europe or other continents your ancestors are from. What to do while you are waiting for your results? Read up on the history of your ancestors native lands since at least the Roman Empire or before. Do the regular genealogical research to develop your family tree. Upload your family tree to the DNA website. Upload your most distant maternal and most distant paternal relatives along with location and birth and death dates. If you haven t traced your family across the pond just say unknown. I know my ancestors are from the British Isles and Germany. I know two eighth great grandparents came from Scotland via Northern Island and that two lines are from Germany. But the others I don t know if they are English, Welsh, Scottish, or Irish. Jones says Welsh, but dad s DNA says Irish. Upload your surnames. Give access to your administrators. What to do after you receive your results? Contact the cousins identified with your test. Tell them who you are and ask them if they have any of your surnames in their families. Review their list of surnames and family tree. Respond to any inquiries you receive, even if it takes you a few months. Late is better than never. Keep working with someone until you find the connection. Join the various projects that are appropriate based on your results and your knowledge. Keep reviewing the data on a timely basis. Additional people are testing all the time. Results are revised based on the number of participants and additional scientific information. Information by LuAnne Jones Chronicling America Free! Online Digital Newspaper & Trade Papers Chronicling America s Historic American Newspapers can be searched for free thanks to The National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP), a partnership between the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the Library of Congress (LC). Supported by NEH, this rich digital resource has been developed and is permanently maintained at the Library of Congress. Newspapers from may be searched or you can use the U.S. Newspaper Directory to locate information about American newspapers published as early as 1690 to present. This free database of online newspapers is a great resource when searching for information on your family members. Currently 45 states and one territory participate in the National Digital Newspaper Program. It is hoped to have all states and U.S. territories as part of the program to have an open, free source of newspapers available free of charge to search. Over 12 million pages are currently available to search and more pages and newspapers are added on a regular basis. You may search by state or newspaper or look up a newspaper in the directory. In some instances newspapers changed names and the directory is helpful for learning the new name. Go to this link to search for your ancestors in the news Submitted by Paula Perkins 2
3 FamilyTreeDNA Admin Conference FamilyTreeDNA held their annual volunteer project administrator s conference in Houston last month. Speakers and FamilyTreeDNA staff presented educational topics to help project administrators keep up to date on the latest tools and advances in DNA offered by FamilyTreeDNA. They may not sell the largest amount of tests but no other testing company has volunteer project admins or conferences for people around the world to meet and share tips and help each other. They are very passionate about genealogy. We had volunteers from Ireland, England, Scotland and Sweden to name a few of the locations. I connected with several people who had Perkins ancestry, which may connect to my line and an adoptee who turned out to be connected to me. We toured the lab seeing staff and machines in action. FamilyTreeDNA is accepting autosomal test results transfers. Testers can transfer their results for free to FamilyTreeDNA. When ordering a new test go to our link below to join. Collin County ancestry not required. Dallas Genealogical Society DNA Special Interest Group meets Thursdays at 6:00 pm on the 7 th floor. For further information contact Mic Barnette at mic@micbarnette.com The FamilyFInder autosomal test is currently on sale for $ You may receive a holiday coupon for $10 off this test. Other tests are on sale and be sure to check your inbox if you have tested yourself or a family member for a weekly holiday coupon. These coupons can be used for any tester that you choose to have tested. To order new tests at CCGS DNA project go to this link: FamilyTreeDNA Learning Center will help you successfully understand your personal page and DNA terms. A glossary is available too. 3

This is a first of its kind genetic map of the people of Ireland, which was produced by scientists at the Royal College of Surgeons and by genealogical researchers at the Genealogy Society of Ireland. Anyone that has had a genetic genealogy test may find this map of use. About 10 genetic clusters have been found that are specific to regions of Ireland. Our hearts grow tender with childhood memories and love of kindred, and we are better throughout the year for having, in spirit, become a child again at Christmastime. ~Laura Ingalls Wilder~ Dick Eastman s article link: genetic- map- of- ireland- unlocks- secrets- about- ancestors/ The Irish DNA Atlas may be found at:
