"Using the Portal to Texas History for Genealogical Research PRESENTED by Kathleen Murray Genealogists know that identifying historical context is vital to uncovering our ancestors' stories. With sizable and searchable collections of photographs, maps, book, and newspapers, among other resources, the Portal offers a range of materials to satisfy that quest. Become familiar with these resources and learn to target your research queries for meaningful discoveries. Actual genealogical research questions will guide the exploration. KATHLEEN MURRAY Kathleen Murray holds a PhD in Information Science from the University of North Texas and a Certificate in Genealogical Studies from the University of Strathclyde. During her 15 years as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of North Texas Libraries, she was involved in major research studies concerning the use and impact of The Portal to Texas History. Kathleen has presented research findings and educational programs at several local, regional, national, and international genealogy and library conferences. 3 DNA Tips & Tools by Paula Perkins The Austin Genealogy Society is hosting a two-day seminar on May 11 and 12 about DNA. The seminar is about adding DNA to our genealogy toolboxes. The guest speaker is Blaine Bettinger, PH.D, J.D. a well-known expert in the genetic genealogy field. 5 News Continued Genealogy Center News - Haggard Library The Genealogy Center has new books covering the Northwest. They have a full line up of Spring 2018 classes to assist you with your genealogy endeavors. Orphan Train Rider Research Database Ancestry.com now has records to help with researching an Orphan Train rider. The information is from two volumes of work. The first volume covers 13,000 children who resided in the Catholic New York Foundling Hospital from 1870 to The second volume covers only about 5,000 of the estimated 30,000 orphans from the Children s Aid Society. Names were extracted from enumerations conducted at the hospital: 1870 and 1880 federal censuses; the New York City Police Census of 1890; the federal censuses of 1900, 1910, and 1920; and the New York State censuses of 1905, 1915, and Orphans are arranged chronologically by census, and then alphabetically. Most will provide the individual's name, race, sex, age, and status (inmate versus caretaker). id=61639 (Note: Free search but pd. subscription needed to see view) Not all will be listed either.
