2 WARRANTY - MATERIAL HPS warrants to Buyer that the products sold will be free of defects in workmanship or material for a period of one (1) year (or as otherwise specified) from the date of original shipment by HPS when stored, installed, operated or maintained in accordance with recommendations of HPS and standard industry practice and when used under proper and normal use. HPS shall in no event be responsible or liable for modifications, alterations, misapplication or repairs made to its products by Buyer or others, or for damage caused thereto by negligence, accident or improper use by Buyer or others. This warranty does not include reimbursement for the expenses of labor, transportation, removal or reinstallation of the products. This warranty shall run only to the first Buyer of a product from HPS, from HPS Buyer, or from an original equipment manufacturer reselling HPS product, and is non-assignable and non-transferable and shall be of no force and effect if asserted by any person other than such first Buyer. THE FOREGOING WARRANTY IS EXCLUSIVE AND IN LIEU OF ALL OTHER WARRANTIES WHETHER WRITTEN, ORAL, EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED. THERE ARE NO WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS OF ANY PRODUCT FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE WARRANTY - APPLICATION HPS does not warrant the accuracy of and results from product or system performance recommendations resulting from any engineering analysis or study. This applies regardless of whether a charge is made for the recommendation, or if it is provided free of charge. Responsibility for selection of the proper product of application rests solely with the Buyer. In the event of errors or inaccuracies determined to be caused by HPS, its liability will be limited to the re- performance of any such analysis or study. BUYER INSPECTIONS Tests, inspections and acceptance of all material must be made at the factory. Buyer s inspectors are welcome at the factories and are provided with the necessary facilities for carrying out their work. Name and phone number of who should be contacted for inspection should be given to HPS no later than two weeks prior to scheduled shipment date. LIMITATION OF LIABILITY IN NO EVENT AND UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHALL HPS BE LIABILE TO BUYER OR TO ANY OTHER PERSON FOR ANY INDIRECT, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL OR INCIDENTAL LOSSES OR DAMAGES, INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, DAMAGE TO OR LOSS OF USE OF ANY PRODUCT, LOST SALES, OR PROFITS, OR DELAY OR FAILURE TO PERFORM THIS WARRANTY OBLIGATION, OR CLAIMS OF THIRD PARTIES AGAINST PURCHASER, ARISING OUT OF OR IN CONNECTION WITH THE SALE, INSTALLATION, USE OF, INABILITY TO USE, OR THE REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT OF, HPS PRODUCTS. As stated herein, the term person shall include without limitation, any individual proprietorship, partnership, corporation or entity. EXCLUSIVE REMEDY Any claim by Buyer that a product is defective or non-conforming shall be deemed waived by Buyer unless submitted to HPS in writing within thirty (30) days from the date Buyer discovered, or by reasonable inspection should have discovered the alleged defect or non-conformity. Any warranty claim must be brought within one year of discovery of the alleged defect or non-conformity. 3 General The HPS under-oil distribution arrester is designed to limit surge voltage by discharging the surge current to ground. The arrester is designed for under-oil applications. It will meet or exceed the application requirements of IEEE C62.11 and IEC standards for metal oxide surge arresters for AC Power Circuits. The HPS under-oil arrester is designed to be used inside a distribution transformer, immersed in an insulating liquid. The arrester can be used where the maximum temperature does not exceed 125 C, and where the weighted average temperature does not exceed 90 C. The arrester can be mounted inside the distribution transformer tank in a horizontal or vertical position. In a vertical-mount position, alongside the transformer coils, the ejected internal parts will fall to the bottom of the tank. If the arrester is mounted above the core and coils, a pressboard (or similar) shield should be used to prevent ejected parts from falling into the windings of the transformer. The transformer should not be tested (impulse or hipot) with the arrester connected. If the arrester is connected to the transformer during impulse test, the arrester will clamp the voltage; thus the transformer will not be subjected to full test voltage. If the arrester is connected to the transformer during hipot test, it is highly probable that the arrester will be damaged by this overvoltage. Production Tests A complete production test program ensures the under oil design satisfies the IEC requirements, as well as the IEEE C62.11 requirements. HPS maintains stringent testing controls in accordance with IEC & IEEE C62.11 to guarantee that the customer receives consistent quality with every product. HPS also performs various Quality Assurance tests on every batch of metal oxide varistor (MOV) blocks. The routine tests listed below, in addition to the exceptionally controlled manufacturing processes, ensure that HPS products demonstrate a superior level of quality. MOV Disc Routine Tests: Physical Inspection Visually performed post grind, post energy test, and for a final visual inspection. Rated Energy Test Procedure confirms the energy capability of each zinc oxide disc element. Discharge Voltage Test Every disc undergoes full lightning discharge 8/20 current wave impulse to verify its volt vs. amp characteristics. Watts Loss Test Test measures the AC watts loss and capacitive current characteristics of the disc. MOV Block Batch QA Tests: Square Wave Energy Test Performed on a 5 disc sample from each batch, this test is performed to quantify the batch energy capability. High Current Test Each 5 disc sample is subjected to two high current discharges of the same polarity to ensure high current characteristics. AC Life Test The discs are placed under test conditions for a minimum of 160 hours to verify performance. 4 Arrester Care Normal care taken in handling the arrester will prevent the possibility of damage to the metal-oxide valve elements. For example, do not allow the arrester to be impacted by, or on, other objects and be shocked mechanically. The arrester is constructed of materials that have little or no moisture absorbing capacity. Special precautions are not necessary to prevent the arrester from being exposed to moisture laden air prior to installation. A normal transformer treat or bake out should be sufficient to remove any moisture which may have been introduced into the transformer and absorbed by the arrester surfaces. The arrester does not require testing. No test which applies power-frequency voltage in excess of arrester voltage rating should be made without consulting Hubbell Power Systems. There is no single field test which will indicate the complete operating characteristics of the arrester. Features and Detailed Description The under-oil arrester, shown in Figure 2. contains a number of MOV discs mounted securely inside a phenolic housing. The MOV discs are made by Hubbell Power Systems in Wadsworth, Ohio. The arrester is shipped fully assembled. The catalog number, rating, and maximum continuous operating voltage (MCOV) capability are identified on the phenolic housing. Under oil arrester qualifies for fail OPEN per IEEE C62.11 and IEC when the short circuit current exceeds the values tabulated in Table 2. An arrester fails OPEN if, after the fault current is interrupted by an overcurrent protective device, the resultant arrester is an open circuit. Tests have indicated that the force of fragmentation will be damped by the surrounding insulating liquid, thereby preventing damage to adjacent components such as core and coils. Table 2 specifies the insulation characteristics and fail open current rating of the arrester. Contact your HPS representative for additional assistance. Table 5 displays HPS s offered hardware configurations. Customers are able to select the desired under-oil arrester by choosing the correct catalog ID number and pairing it with a specific hardware code. Example: would produce a 3.0kV under-oil arrester with mounting brackets and no lead wires.
