1 SVQ Level 3 Plastering Skills Test Information for Employers and Apprentices
2 Guidelines: Version / The Skills Test for Plastering must be taken by apprentices approaching the end of their four year modern apprenticeship (MA). Adult Apprentice s complete the skills test after two years. The MA is not complete until the test is passed. A re-sit of the test will be available. 2. The duration of the test will be two days (12 hours) at a Plastering Skills test centre. 3. The test will assess competencies from the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) Awards and UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES) Approved Qualification Structure derived from National Occupational Standards (NOS) Information on the Qualification structure is available on the CITB Website. Information on the NOS is available on the UK Standards website
3 Employer and Candidate Checklist Version / Preparation on the points listed below should prove beneficial when taking the Plastering Skills Test. Employer Checklist Provide sufficient time for the candidate to prepare Ensure the candidate is prepared Provide refresher training as necessary Provide candidate briefing prior to the test Encourage the candidate to approach the skills test in a positive and confident manner. Candidate Checklist Understand what competencies you are required to demonstrate Ensure you are prepared and have undertaken refresher training if it is required Approach the skills test in a positive and confident manner - 2 -
4 CITB Version / Skills Testing Candidates Joining Instructions (Plastering) 1. You have been booked for a Skills Test on the date and at the Test Centre shown on your copy of the booking letter. You should report to the test Invigilator at the time and place shown on the attached instructions and map. Please ensure you report on time, as trainees arriving late may not be allowed to take the test. 2. You are reminded that candidates must conform at all times to the rules of conduct of the Test Centre. Any candidate who fails to abide by the rules or to accept the instructions of the Invigilator or his accredited representative may be excluded from the test. 3. Candidates will be briefed in detail by the Invigilator on the test requirements when they arrive at the Centre. General rules on the test are listed below: a) Candidates will be required to break for lunch at the same time where facilities for lunch and refreshments are available candidates must pay for their own meals. b) Candidates are not allowed to smoke, or to use a radio or audio equipment within the test area. c) Candidates will only be allowed to take the test if they are wearing suitable clothing and footwear. Trainers are not allowed. 4. Candidates must bring some form of photographic identification, e.g driving licence. Tools and equipment Candidates must bring a pen, pencil and a kit of tools containing the following: 300 mm Laying-on-trowel Hawk 175mm Gauging trowel Lath hammer Stock brush Tool brush Wire scratcher Float (wood/plastic) Board cutting knife Internal angle trowel External angle trowel Pair of snips Pair of pliers/pincers 3 metre tape - 3 -
5 Plasterer Section 1 Board and Skim Ceiling and Duct Cut and fix plasterboard to ceiling/duct and apply one coat lightweight finishing plaster. Boarding 1. Gaps between Boards should be 2-4 mm wide 2. Not more than 230mm between screw fixings 3. Boards staggered ( to break bond ) Fiba scrimming 4. Scrim cut to required length within 25mm 5. Scrim not over lapping tolerance 25mm 6. Scrim completely covered with plaster no dry scrim showing Accuracy of finish ceiling 7. Flatness: maximum deviation 5mm (Checked with 1.8mm Rule) 8. Ceiling/duct angle straightness: maximum deviation 5mm (checked with 1.8mm Rule) Appearance 9. Finish surface towelled smooth generally free from gauls, trowel marks and blemishes Accuracy of finish of duct 10. Duct angle bead straight tolerance 5mm (Checked with 1.8mm Rule) 11. Ducted face Plumb: Tolerance 3mm Duct soffit level in width: tolerance 3mm Duct soffit level in length: tolerance 5mm (2 from 3 expectable) 12. Flatness: maximum deviation 5mm (Checked with 1.8mm Rule) 13. Finish surface towelled smooth generally free from gauls, fat, trowel marks and blemishes 14. Duct/wall B angle straightness: maximum Deviation. 5mm. (checked with 1.8mm Rule) Appearance 15. Bead edge to show clean and free from overlapping Finishing/setting coat plaster - 4 -

7 Plastering Section 2 Instructions to Candidate External render finishes to wall area and attached pier Apply/produce cement /sand and lime render plain face and dry dash finish in two coat work to wall area A and attached pier. 1. Fix bell cast bead to wall A underside of bead to be measured and fixed 150mm from floor 2. Fix stop end bead to wall A 1.8m from attached pier 3. Apply 1:1:6 cement/lime/sand in two-coat work to wall A and attached pier to total thickness not less than 13mm.undercoat to be well keyed 4. Form external angle to pier 5. Apply 1:1:6 cement/lime/sand straightening coat to wall A and attached pier. 6. Dry dash attached pier face., using 6mm decorative chip (no misses or marks ) 7. Plain float finish surface to Wall A and attached pier to be plumb and flat to include formed returned end (150mm) Standards and Tolerances Accuracy and finish for external renders Accuracy and finish for plain face and attached pier at wall A Plumb (checked with 1.8m rule) at L/H angle tolerance 3mm. Mid point tolerance 3mm R/H angle tolerance 3mm Flat and (checked with a 1.8m rule) at ceiling level tolerance 3mm At skirting level (above bellcast bead) tolerance 3mm Diagonally tolerance 3mm Bell cast fully formed throughout its length Bell end retuned and fully formed - 6 -

Square Checked overall deviation from a right angle tolerance 3mm Appearance wall A and pier return Surface plain float finish with even texture overall, generally free from scratch marks scour lines and misses. Appearance wall A at attached pier face Dry dash free from heavy trowel marks, chips spread evenly, no misses or whips marks - 7 -

10 Plasterer Section 3 Instructions to Candidate Lightweight Plaster in two coat work to wall area Apply plastering materials in two coat work using lightweight plaster to wall area B including window 1. Cut and fix standard angle beads to soffit and both reveals 2. Apply straightening / floating coat in lightweight plaster to wall area and window soffit /reveals 3. Float key surfaces to receive finishing plaster 4. Apply finishing /setting coat in lightweight plaster to wall area and window soffit / reveals 5. Surfaces should be towelled smooth 6. All angles should be plumb and in line, margins parallel, window soffit / reveals square to window frame. Standards and Tolerances Wall Plumb and straight (checked with a 1.8m rule) L/H angle tolerance 3mm R/H angle tolerance 3mm Flatness (checked with a 1.8m rule) At ceiling height tolerance 3mm At skirting height tolerance 3mm Window opening Reveals square off the window tolerance 2mm Reveals parallel off the window tolerance 3mm Soffit square off the window tolerance 2mm Soffit parallel off the window tolerance 3mm Appearance Finished surfaces towelled smooth; generally free from gauls, fat, trowel marks and blemishes Bead edges to show clean and free from overlapping finishing / setting coat plaster - 9 -

12 Plasterer Section 4 Instructions to Candidate Drylining Cut and fix wallboard to attached pier using direct dot dab drylining system 1. Measure and cut plasterboard to fit sides of attached pier, clean edges, uncut edge to external angle. 2. Fix plasterboard to attached pier using drylining adhesive 3. All angles should be plumb in line and margins parallel 4. Board surface to be free from damage ( paper tear, cuts, bruising) Standards and Tolerances Fixing Wall board around attached Pier Gaps between Boards should be 2-4 mm wide Square at wall B and C at three points, high / middle / bottom tolerance 3mm. Wall boards to be plumb - tolerance 3mm (checked with a 1.8m rule) External angle plumb: tolerance 3mm (checked with a 1.8m rule) Cutting around socket outlet; accurate -tolerance 5mm Margin at wall B and C at three points high middle and bottom tolerance 3mm. General Appearance External angle board to have uncut edges No damage or bruising to boards
