2 Coronet Restoration Partners Customer since: 2008 Location: Newport, RI Specialty: Restoration of the schooner Coronet Jamestown FOR BOATERS The 131-ft (40m) schooner Coronet was one of the most elegant sailing vessels of her day. Built in 1885 for industrialist Rufus Bush, she was a symbol of Gilded Age opulence, with a marble staircase, stained-glass doors, mahogany-paneled staterooms, and a piano in the main salon. Famed for winning a trans-atlantic race, and for circumnavigating the globe as one of the first U.S.-based yachts to round Cape Horn, Coronet later fell into disrepair. She was acquired by Coronet Restoration Partners in Coronet Restoration Partners have significant experience in classic yacht restoration. Their collection includes Cangarda, a steam-powered yacht from 1901, and Joyant, a P class racing yacht from Both have been fully restored to their original configurations. CRP have contracted Rutherford s Boat Shop of Richmond, California, to perform restoration work on Coronet, with the process taking place on the campus of the International Yacht Restoration School (IYRS) in Newport, RI. Once restoration is complete, her owner plans to recreate a voyage Coronet undertook in 1896, when she sailed from New York City to Japan via San Francisco and Hawaii. In Japan, she was part of a joint Japanese-American scientific expedition that witnessed a total eclipse of the sun. 6 bottom paint 101 Bottom paints are applied to combat growth on the bottom of boats. These paints contain different types and amounts of biocides and other additives to prevent weed, shell, and slime fouling. Here s how we organize our offerings at Jamestown Distributors: Leaching Type Ablative, Hard or Hybrid: Ablative paints wash away over time, whereas hard paints remain on the bottom until sanded off. Hard paints are often used on boats that run at high speeds (over 30 kts), or are left in the water for extended periods of time. Base Type Solvent or Water: Both solvent-based and water-based bottom paints have a proven track record of working well. Water-based paints are easier to clean up, and are considered to have lower environmental impact. Solvent-based paints are often easier to apply in cold temperatures. There s no such thing as the absolute best bottom paint. However, there probably is a paint that s best for your boat. Many will simply sell you their most expensive antifouling, but we want you to buy the paint that best fits your needs. Decoding bottom paint is a huge undertaking, because there are so many variables that can influence its performance. That s why we turned to the experts: inhouse, in the field, in academia, and most of all - you, our customers. Results have been pouring in from far and wide, and distilling this massive amount of data has helped us take some of the guesswork out of finding the right paint for you. We re miles ahead of anyone on this, but still just scratching the surface. Let s get to the bottom of this together. Biocide Type: Biocide is the agent that gives bottom paints their antifouling properties. Copper Copper has been used to provide antifouling protection since the 18th century. This time-tested biocide is found in most bottom paints. Zinc Pyrithione A modern biocide used as an alternative to copper, for lower environmental impact. Econea A metal-free, biodegradable biocide that has proven highly effective. Compared to copper, smaller amounts of Econea provide the same protection. Irgarol A chemical booster that inhibits photosynthesis, Irgarol and other additives are used to provide additional protection against slime and algae. Price/Amount of Biocide: Price is often directly related to the amount of biocide and quality of resins in the paint. Generally, the greater the biocide content and the better the resins, the higher the price. However, not all boats require the strongest, most expensive paint to ward off barnacles, weeds, and slime. 7 know your boat choosing the right paint for your boat Which bottom paint did you use last year? How did it perform? How often do you use your boat? More usage = less growth. Where do you use your boat? Warm water / more current = more growth Colder water / less current = less growth Sail vs. Power Sailboats often have more growth than powerboats because they operate at lower speeds and the ablative process is less effective on boats going less than 7 kts. Cleaning Cleaning your boat s bottom even once during the season (late July / early August) is sometimes enough to clean off slime and reactivate the ablative properties in the paint. 25 Richard Honan Customer since: 1994 Location: Winthrop, MA Specialty: DIY Boat Building Richard Honan has been building boats for over a decade. A sign maker by trade, he discovered Jamestown Distributors over 20 years ago. He began buying epoxy and fasteners for his sign business, as well as paint for his fiberglass one-design Raven class sailboat. In 2002, he decided to combine his love of sailing with his woodworking experience, and build a small wooden sailboat. Richard chose an 8 ft Nutshell Pram, a Joel White design. Brothers, sons-in-law, nephews, and grand-children were enlisted in the building process. Since then, he has built 9 more boats for a total of 10 to date: Three 8 Nutshell Prams, a 17 Queen Charlotte kayak, Indian Girl canoes, a 15 Duck Trap wherry rowboat, a 14 Sharpie sailing skiff, a 16 Melonseed sailboat, and his latest (shown here in various stages of completion) - a 16 Adirondack Guide Boat. Richard s impeccable craftsmanship was formally recognized at the 2014 Wooden Boat Show, where his Melonseed sailboat won both 1st place in the Concours d Elegance, and Best in Show in the I Built It Myself exhibit. He says his favorite part of the boat building process is the excitement of beginning a new project, and getting his family involved. The biggest challenge?
