2 Paul Kessinger Customer since: 1979 Location: Guilford, CT Specialty: DIY Boat Building Bitten by the wooden boat bug 20 years ago, marketing executive Paul Kessinger built boats in his spare time until he was ready to retire. He completed three boats, restored two others, and started Madison Kit Builders to offer beautiful, affordable kits for DIY boat builders. He recently finished his trailerable trawler, the Tardis, a 28-ft. Olga, in time to display her at the 2017 WoodenBoat Show in Mystic, CT. It s a new boat from German designer Mark Smaalders. At 28 ft. long and 8.5 ft. wide, the Tardis is the biggest boat you can get on a trailer without permits. I knew that deep down, I really wanted wood, and I really wanted to build a BIG one, just to see if I could do it. He favors this design because it resembles a scaled-down version of his favorite classic powerboat design a Lake Union Dreamboat. Over three years, Paul spent 4,000 hours painstakingly turning a pile of marine plywood into his dream boat. The Tardis uses egg-crate construction, obtaining incredible strength through a system of frames, girders and stringers that lock together into one unit. But to achieve that strength, every piece must be bonded to every other piece with epoxy fillets and fiberglass tabbing. There are 600 feet of fillets in this boat two football fields worth. The most important building material in the Tardis (aside from the plywood) is TotalBoat Thixo in a caulking tube. I used 170 tubes! After a summer of cruising, Tardis has exceeded all my expectations in terms of speed, seakindliness and comfort. Her cruising adventures will begin in earnest this winter, with a trip by trailer to Florida, then north up the Intracoastal Waterway as the seasons change, ending in Maine. The Tardis is named after the blue 1950s-era police-phone-booth spaceship in the BBC television series Doctor Who because the spaceship is much, much larger on the inside than outside. What Happened in 2017? More Testing! The ocean is the perfect R&D lab, so last summer, we tested 25 different antifouling paints in three locations across southern New England. We tested a mix of proven performers from leading manufacturers, as well as top-secret new formulations not yet available to the public. Test panels were checked at regular intervals to measure amount and type of fouling present. Results were compared against data from previous years. Paints that exhibit consistent performance give us more confidence in recommending them, and set a high bar for potential new additions to the TotalBoat bottom paint lineup. The Return of Irgarol The slime-fighting agent, Irgarol, suddenly became unavailable in early 2015, affecting some of the most popular dual-biocide paints on the market. The shortage meant that some paints featured revised formulas that substituted extra copper for the missing Irgarol, or were unavailable altogether. Good news! 7 Bottom Paint Survey Findings What Did We Discover? With over 4,500 survey responses from North America alone, it was easy to find trends in paint preference and performance by region. First, we grouped paints by type, then calculated average paint scores, where a score of 1 indicates a surface covered in hard shell fouling, and 4 represents a clean bottom, devoid of any growth (refer to the key below for a more detailed breakdown of scores). 26 Hands On Deck Customer since: 2016 Location: Green Bay, WI Specialty: Community-Based Boat Building Building youth by teaching them to build boats is the mission of Hands On Deck, a non-profit organization focused on community-based boat building. The expression All hands on deck means everyone s needed to help in an emergency, and Hands On Deck is truly a community effort. It was formed in July of 2016 to address the needs of at-risk students with low academic ratings and high truancy rates, with the ultimate goal of improving Green Bay s community and economic prospects by helping youth and families succeed. In addition, they re learning traditional boat building skills in order to help preserve Green Bay s robust maritime heritage. It s a simple, but very powerful and effective idea: People helping people, by helping them build boats under the tutelage of master shipwrights and technicians. Through hands-on activities, young people and adults gain confidence by learning problem-solving and traditional skills. Using geometry, trigonometry, materials science, and other skills, they build wooden boats rooted in the cultural history of the Great Lakes. Along the way, they retain the science, technology, engineering, arts, and math skills to succeed in school, a job, or even a cherished hobby. Director Mark Hawkins even sources the wood for projects himself, saying, I think one of the most exciting things to me is finding local wood, harvested by a local guy who works with his kids, and turning that back into a community-based project where we re teaching kids how to build boats sustainably and we re teaching them how to use hand tools and traditional methods. These traditional methods include learning the basics of how wood was traditionally harvested and processed using a tool called a mokotagen, or crooked knife, which Native Americans used to build birchbark canoes.
