3 Patented Feb. 12, ,483,605 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. ALEXANDER. T. KASLEY, OF ESSINGTON, PENINSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO WESTING HOUSE E.ECTRIC & MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYL W.A.N.A. STEAV-CEES CONSTRUCTION FOR TURBINES. Application filed October 4, Serial No. 505,276. To all whom, it may concern: more detailed understanding of my inven Be it known that I, ALEXANDER. T. KASLEY, tion, I show the wall of a turbine stator at a citizen of the United States, and a resident 10, provided with fixed blading 11 and sur of Essington, in the county of Delaware and rounding a spindle 12 provided with moving State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new blading 13. A primary nozzle block, 14 and 60 and useful Improvement in Steam-Chest a secondary nozzle block 15 of any desired Constructions for Turbines, of which the fol construction face the moving plates 13 which lowing is a specification. are, for example, of the impulse type. My invention relates to a steam chest con A steam chest 34 surmounts the turbine struction for turbines and it has for its ob and is formed of a flat upper plate 35 and 65 ject to provide apparatus of the character a similar lower plate 16, these plates being designated, and shall be simple, compact and formed, for example, of ordinary boiler iron. inexpensive in construction and effective in A side wall or hoop 17, taking for example, operation. - the form of a forged ring with planed edges, In the accompanying drawing, Fig. 1 is is clamped between the plates 35 and 16 and 70 an end view of a turbine, partially in section by bolts and preferably the edges of and partially in elevation, and having a the ring 17 are sealed by means of copper steam chest applied thereto constructed in wire gaskets as has for many years accordance with one form of my invention been common in locomotive steam chest prac and Fig. 2, is a detail sectional view of a tice where slide valves are employed. 75 modification of the steam chest construction The nozzle blocks 14 and 15 together form shown in Fig. 1. a nozzle deck abutting against the lower sur It is well known that steam turbines are face of the plate 16 and they are fastened di ordinarily provided with steam chests from rectly to said plate as by studs -, the which the steam is admitted to primary and steam chest thus forming the main support secondary nozzle blocks by means of appro for the steam nozzles. priate control valves. The steam chests A primary valve port 21 is provided in which have heretofore been constructed for the plate 16 and an additional primary valve this purpose have in general taken the form port. 22 is provided in alinement there with of rather complicated and expensive cast in the upper plate 35. These valve ports are ings, inasmuch as it has been usual to incor appropriately bushed, as is common in the porate complicated valve structures in the art, and receive a hollow spool valve 23 un body of the casting. - - der the control of suitable operating means In accordance with the present invention, 24 and a guide member 26 so that the spool 90 I provide a steam chest of simple and inex valve 23 substantially simultaneously con pensive type in that two flat plates of boiler trols the flow of steam through the ports 21 iron or plate steel are cut to appropriate size and 22. as is usual in balanced valve prac and mounted together with a side-wall struc tice. It will be obvious that steam flowing ture therebetween to make up the body of from the steam chest through the port the steam chest. Aligned valve ports are into the space under the bonnet 25 is per formed in these two plates and the entire mitted to flow through the interior of the structure is fastened directly to the nozzle spool valve 23 to the nozzle block 14 into deck with bonnets surmounting the upper which the steam admitted through the port valve ports. Spool valves are placed in the 21 flows directly. respective sets of aligned valve ports and In like manner, secondary valve ports 27 appropriate means are provided for permit and 28 are associated with a secondary valve ting the flow of steam admitted under said member 29, a bonnet, and a guide men bonnets through said chest structure to the ber appropriate nozzle blocks. Steam is admitted to the valve chest struc By this construction, expensive and special ture through an opening 32 in the upper castings are entirely avoided and further plate and a pipe 33 having a flanged end more the danger of hidden flaws is largely fastened directly to the plate 35 as by suit eliminated by the use of rolled or forged abe studs. - metal. Having thus described the arrangement of Referring to Fig. 1 of the drawing for a steam chest constructed in accordance with

4 ge my invention, the operation thereof will be obvious. The steam chest is normally filled with steam at boiler pressure and upon open ing of the primary valve, either by hand or by the governor, steam flows directly to the primary nozzle block 14 through the port 21 and indirectly through the port 22 and the interior of the spool valve 23. In like manner the opening of the secondary spool alve 29 admits steam directly to the second alry nozzle block 15 through the port 27 and indirectly through the port 2S and the in terior of the spool valve 29. The cost of the stock material for the con struction of a steam chest of the character indicated is trivial and the machine work is of the most elementary character so that it is an easy matter to construct a steam chest of any desired size or shape without the use of expensive patterns and castings. All parts are of readily ascertainable and de pendable strength so that the danger of fail ure by explosion is largely minimized. By the usual lagging material, a smooth and pleasing external ap)earance is secured. Referring to the form of my construction shown in Fig. 2, top and bottom plates 35 and 16 are employed as before, but the side wall construction takes the form of a forged channel ring 40 having the flanges thereof joined to the plates 35 and 16 as by rivets Primary and secondary valves are pro vided as before in suitable bonnets 25 and, the spool valves 42 and 43, however, be ing of the simple spool type, rather than of the hollow type. A set of hollow stilds surrounds the primary valve and penetrates both the upper and lower plates of the steam chest and also the nozzle deck so that the openings therethrough furnish communication be tween the space under the bonnet 25 and the interior of the primary nozzle block. These studs are preferably expanded in place in any desired manner similar to boiler tube practice and they are thus not only readily rendered steam tight, but they also serve to firmly join the upper and lower walls of the steam chest and to firmly attach the nozzle lock to the steam chest. In like manner, the secondary valve 43 is associated with hollow studs form ing passages between the space under the bonnet and the interior of the secondary nozzle block. Steam is shown as admitted to the chest in Fig. 2 through the lower plate thereof, as at 46. The operation of the structure thus shown will be obvious. Upon the opening of the primary valve, steam flows directly through the lower port thereof and indirectly through the upper port to the space under the bonnet 25 and downwardly through 1483,605 studs and into the interior of the primary nozzle block and likewise with re spect to the Secondary valve. It will be obvious that steam may be ad mitted to the steam chest either through the top or bottom thereof or through the side wall with but slight modification of the machining operations and without the necessity of expensive special patterns and castings. Thus steam may be admitted through the top of the steam chest of Fig. 2 as shown in dotted lines at 47. While I have shown my invention in but two forms, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that it is not so limited, but is susceptible of various other changes and modifications without departing from the spirit thereof, and I desire, therefore, that only such limitations shall be placed there upon as are imposed by the prior art or as are specifically set forth in the appended claims. What I claim is:- 1.
