3 Patented Feb. 8, UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. JOSEPH. H. BOURGON, of DETROIT, IVIICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO THE STUDEBAKER COR PORATION, OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY. WINDOW. REGULATOR. Application filed June 28, Serial No. 648,364. This invention relates to a mechanism for cally Swinging arm 5. The arm 5 is fastened raising and lowering windows, such mecha- adjacent to its lower end to a segment 6 of a nism being commonly known as window Worm wheel, the segment 6 and the arm 5 regulators, and the object of my invention is being pivoted at 7, to a metal board 8 which 5 the provision of a mechanism of the character extends substantially across the full width 60 described which is simple and inexpensive in of the door 1 and forms a part thereof for its construction, is positive in operation, is strengthening the same and entirely support easily operated to raise or lower the asso ing the window regulator mechanism. ciated window, and is particularly adapted worm 9 formed on a vertical shaft 10 meshes 10 for use in connection with the type of win- with the Segment 6. A bevel 55 which is carried at the free end of a vertill gear 25 secured to the shaft 10 adjacent its li0. 1

4 O upper end meshes with the gear 23 and is caused to turn there with to operate the Worn 9. It is thus evident that the turning of the handle 22 rotates the shaft 16, gears 23 and 25, and worm shaft 10. When the handie 22 is turned, causing the Worm 9 to turn there with, the Worm wheel sector 6 is caused to rotate about its pivot 7 in a direction de pendant upon the direction of rotation of the handle 2 Inasmuch as the arm 5 is Secured to the worm wheel sector 6, rotation of the handle causes the free end of the arm 5 to be raised or lowered, and the associated Window 3 l'esting on the roller 4 is caused to move up or down in a col'i'esponding man ner. A coil spring 26 attached at one end to the upper flanged edge of the metal board 8 and at the other end to the arn 5 Serves to counter-balance the weight of the window 3 resting On the roller 4 at the outer end of the arm 5, so that any strain due to the total weight of the window will be reduced and the mechanism will work freely and without friction. The glass of the Window 3 is provided with a channel shaped metal binding stip 27 at its lower edge which rests on the roller 4 of the arm 5. The upper outside edge of this strip 27 being flanged over and outwardly as at 28. The sheathing of the door 1 pro jects over the lower edge of the window opening 2 to a point adjacent the window 3 as at 29 and is then turned back on it self for a short distance and a flexible rubber strip 30 is placed beneath the same. When the window 3 is raised the rubber strip 30 is compressed between the flange 28 and the door sheathing at 29, to prevent water from passing from the outside of the window to the recess or pocket formed for the window and thus prevent damage to the window regulating mechanism. A downwardly projecting member 31 hav ing an inwardly turned flange at its lower edge is fastened to the binding strip 27, the inwardly turned flange passing below the roller 4 on the arm 5 so that in the event the window 3 becomes stuck or does not freely follow the roller 4 when the same is lowered, the roller 4 will bear against the inwardly turned fange of the member 31 and pull the window 3 with it to its lowered position. The segment of the worm wheel 6 as shown in the drawings is preferably made of sheet metal to reduce weight and cost and in the event that the window 3 works rather hard in its guideways the segment 6 might bend out of the engagement with the worn 9 when an excessive strain is put on the mech anism to move the window 3 if means was not provided (see Fig. 6) for keeping the sector 6 and worm 9 at all times in proper alignment. This means comprises a block 32 Secured to the metal board 8 in which is Supported a ball-bearing 33 which bears against the side of the sector 6 adjacent its outer edge, the ball bearing 33 being free to l'otate. A member 34 also secured to the linetal board 8 passes out around the worm 9 and ove; the outer edge of the sector 6 and carries a ball-bearing 35 which seats freely between the member 34 and the sector 6 at a point on the opposite side of the sector 6 froin the ball-bearing 33 but in a position corresponding therewith. The sector 6 is thus guided between the ball-bearings 33 ad 35 which prevents it from bending side Wise out of engagement with the worn 9. The airin 5 which is secured at its one end to the sector 6 to pivot there with at, has its free end offset from the sector 6 so that lion rotation the arm will free the ball. bearings 33 and 35 and the guide member 34 when the window 3 is raised to closed position. It has heretofore been coinnon practice in building Window regislators to provide ineans foi' locking the Operating handle against 'O- 90 tation when not being Operated, to prevent the window fi'on slipping down inadvert eitly. An important result obtained by the co-struction shown is that it is possible to. do away with such locking mechanism as it 95 is an inherent characteristic of a won and wheel that the wheel is self locking when the threati angle of the worm is equal to, Ol' Sinailer than, the angle of friction between the worm and wheel, the usual value of such thread angle being about 83 degrees. Thus if the thread angle of the worm is 8 degrees or less then'e will be no danger of the window working down inadvertently. Should desire to rise a worm of a greatel' thread angle, any type of Satisfactory handle locking device may be used for preventing. the window from working down. it is understood that formal changes may be made in the specific embodiment of this invention without departing from the Spirit or substance of the broad invention, the scope of which is commensurate with the ap pended claims.
