4 Definitions Sleeves are fittings used to form eyes or loop terminations at the end of a piece of wire rope. They are designed to contain two parts of wire rope at the base of the eye or loop to hold the eye or loop in place. Duplex refers to swage sleeves intended for use with double-back, fold back, returned loops, or turn back eyes formed by laying the wire rope on itself to form a loop. Single refers to swage sleeves intended for use with rolled, Farmers, or Flemish eyes formed by unlaying the strands of wire rope, crossing the strands and relaying the strands around themselves to form a loop. Ferrules are fittings used to form a holding point on a piece of wire rope. Ferrules are also called stops, buttons, knobs, or end fittings. Ferrules are designed to fit one part of wire rope and may be applied with zinc, with wedges, or by swaging. Sockets are bail, clevis, or pin eye terminals attached at the end of a single part of wire rope. Sockets are designed to fit one part of wire rope and may be applied with socketing media, wedges, or by swaging. All ratings refer to short tons of 2000 pounds unless otherwise noted. Working Load Limit is the maximum mass or force a new or as new product is authorized to support in service when the pull is uniformly applied in line with the centerline of the product. Proof Load is the average force applied when performing a proof test (the average force to which a product may be subjected before deformation occurs). Proof Load is usually twice the working load limit. Ultimate Load is the average load or force at which the product fails and no longer supports the load. Shock Load is a force that results from a rapid application of a load (such as impacting or jerking) or the rapid movement of a static load. Shock loads add significantly to the static load and should be avoided. Design Factor describes the relative safety of a load-carrying component. It is usually expressed as the ratio of the Ultimate Load to the Working Load, i.e. 5 to 1 or 5:1. ESCO Rigging products are designed to be used with and tested with Wire Rope conforming to the following description; new 6 x 19 or 6 x 37 Class, EIP, IWRC, Right Regular Lay, Wire Rope made to U.S. Specifications. Specific aluminum sleeves are made for use with 6 x 19 or 6 x 37 Class, EIP, Fiber Core, Right Regular Lay, Wire Rope made to U.S. specifications. The following definitions pertain to this catalog. WARNING: A statement preceded by the triangular attention symbol followed by the word WARNING contains information that must be acted upon to avoid serious injury or death. IMPORTANT: A statement preceded by the word IMPORTANT is one that possesses special significance. Tip: This is information that is handy to know and may make your job easier. 4

5 Understanding All Warnings WARNING: Failure to follow warnings and instructions may result in serious injury or death. Make sure purchasers and end users of ESCO Rigging products read and understand all warnings, cautions, and instructions. All ESCO Rigging products are sold with the express understanding that the purchaser is thoroughly familiar with the correct application and safe use of the product. Responsibility for the use and application of the products rests with the user. Any product will fail if it is abused, misapplied, worn out, or improperly maintained. Failure can cause loads to swing or fall out of control, and may result in personal injury or death, as well as property damage. Never exceed the Working Load Limit for the product. The Working Load Limit (WLL) is the maximum load which should ever be applied to the product. Catalog WLL ratings are based on usual environmental conditions. When recommended wire rope sizes are shown in this catalog, ESCO hardware is rated for use only with those sizes. Do not exceed the Working Load Limit stated by the rope manufacturer. Extreme environmental conditions of heat, cold, and/or corrosion, or high risk applications may necessitate a reduction of the WLL. Avoid shock loads. Avoid jerking, impacting, swinging or handling loads in such a manner that the WLL of the rigging can be exceeded. Avoid irregular loading. No rigging fitting should be loaded principally in bending, torsion, or shear. Avoid these conditions by loading only in the normal, straightline pull for which the fitting is designed. Avoid side loading. Inspect products regularly. Warnings No rigging product will last indefinitely. Corrosion, wear, deformation, gouges, misuse, abuse, alteration, and other conditions will occur and will reduce the Working Load Limit and service life of a product. Perform periodic inspection to determine when to replace a product and avoid a rigging hazard. Inspection frequency depends on users specific applications and local conditions. When in doubt, inspect prior to use. If a part is judged defective, destroy the part do not just discard it! Never permit anyone under a lifted load. Conduct all lifting operations in such a manner that if an equipment failure should occur, no person will be injured. Keep out from under a load and keep out of a load s line of force. Do not weld or modify fittings. ESCO swage fittings are designed to be mechanically attached to the wire rope using ESCO Swage Dies and Procedures. Do not weld or otherwise modify ESCO swage fittings. See ESCO Swaging Instruction Manual I/RIG-500. Proper training is important. Riggers should be properly trained in the design and use of rigging assemblies. Follow the Manual. Follow ESCO Swage Instruction Manual I/RIG-500 for proper rope selection, die selection and swaging techniques when using ESCO swage fittings. The manual contains detailed instructions for swaging all ESCO wire rope fittings with illustrations and captions on how to assemble and swage each type of fitting. The manual also offers tips on making Flemish eyes, and information on swagers and die selection. Don't swage without it. Minimum rope length between splices, sleeves, or fittings. Use adequate rope lengths between terminations. Performance is adversely affected when there are less than 10 rope diameters or about 1-1/2 rope lays of length between splices, sleeves, or fittings. If shorter assemblies are used, testing should be done to ensure adequate performance. Swage fitting performance. ESCO swage fittings are designed to perform satisfactorily when new and when they are applied to the proper size new wire rope using the procedures described in the ESCO Swaging Instructions Manual. Wear and normal use will reduce the Working Load Limit of any assembly. If you have any doubts about a new or used assembly, appropriate inspection and testing should be conducted to ensure adequate performance. Do not use ferrules for suspending loads. Ferrules are not intended for use in applications where loads are fully suspended overhead except in some log harvesting systems where adequate precautions are taken. Other fittings, such as sleeves and sockets, should be used for overhead work. Use drumline ferrules only in winchline-drum applications. Drumline ferrules are intended only for use in holding the winchline in the winch drum pocket. Drumline ferrules must not be used as choker ferrules or for any other purpose than intended. When using drumline ferrules, at least 3 windings of the winchline must remain on the winch drum to avoid direct strain on the drumline ferrules. ESCO distributors are granted permission and encouraged to quote or reproduce these warnings for the purpose of passing them onto the purchasers and users of our products. 5

6 Swage Sleeves for Wire Rope Eyes Stainless Steel Swage Sleeves ESCO Stainless Steel Swage Sleeves are cast from the popular ESCO 40SS stainless steel, created specifically for swaging. The result: The most rugged swage sleeves we make. High Ductility during swaging allows ESCO 40SS to flow evenly around the wire rope for greater gripping strength plus extremely high crack and fracture resistance. Work Hardening during swaging ESCO 40SS work hardens more than any other swaging material to provide higher final toughness and on-the-job durability than other swaging materials. Cold Temperature Durability ESCO 40SS swage sleeve alloy is an austenitic stainless steel alloy that maintains toughness at low temperatures. ESCO 40SS Swage Sleeves are as tough at -60 F as at room temperature. ESCO 40SS Swage Sleeves maintain higher toughness at low temperature than any swaged Carbon Steel Sleeve. Why worry choose ESCO in cold weather applications. Nothing out performs ESCO 40SS Swage Sleeves for toughness. Corrosion Resistance: This unique combination of ductility, work hardening, cold temperature toughness, and resistance to corrosion make ESCO 40SS Stainless Steel Swage Sleeves the reliability and durability leaders in the industry. ESCO 40SS Swage Sleeves are the smart choice for swage sleeves when you want the very best. Duplex Sleeves are Quick, Durable, and Dependable! ESCO Stainless Steel Duplex Sleeves provide the quickest, simplest way to make strong swaged turnback eyes in wire rope. Duplex sleeves allow for easy adjustment of eye size. Make grommets, plain eyes, and tight thimbled eyes quickly and precisely every time. No splicing. No die changes. All ESCO Stainless Steel Sleeves swage in four pressings or less, each sleeve in ESCO open channel dies. Use one-piece sleeves for 1/8" to 1" wire rope Use two-piece sleeves for 1/2" to 2-1/2" wire rope With ESCO Stainless Steel Duplex Sleeves, there simply is no faster, easier way to make tough, durable eyes in wire rope. Cross section of a swaged sleeve shows how ESCO stainless steel flows around and grips each strand for full holding power. The absence of fractures in the deliberately flattened sleeve is proof of the extreme crack resistance of ESCO 40SS stainless steel. 6

7 Swage Sleeves for Wire Rope Eyes Sleeves Make Stronger Flemish Eyes Faster! For those who prefer Flemish eyes, ESCO offers the strength and durability of Stainless Steel Single Sleeves made especially for use with the Flemish eye splice. During swaging, tough stainless steel surrounds the splice, increasing the strength of the slice and preventing unlaying when the wire rope is under load. It also protects the splice, preventing damage from accidental abuse on the job. The tapered elliptical design permits easy rope insertion and encloses the wire ends. ESCO Stainless Steel Single Sleeves swage in standard open channel dies with three or four pressings. No time consuming die changing no need for special tapering dies as with carbon steel sleeves. WARNING: All ESCO swage sleeves are designed for use with 6 x 19 class or 6 x 37 class, right regular lay, EIP, IWRC, or fiber core for aluminum sleeves, wire rope manufactured to U.S. specifications. If other constructions of wire rope are used with these fittings, the fabricator should make up and test sample assemblies to make sure they will perform adequately in the intended application. For complete instructions on how to install and swage ESCO sleeves, refer to the ESCO Swaging Instruction Manual. Carbon Steel Single Sleeves Carbon Steel Single Sleeves for Flemish eyes meet industry standards for efficiency and strength. Manufactured from specially selected steels, these sleeves are produced under rigid quality assurance guidelines. Careful forming followed by custom heat treating processes ensure accurate rope fit, component consistency, and maximum material performance during swaging and on the job. ESCO Carbon Steel Single Sleeves are available in sizes to fit from 1/4" to 2-1/2" wire rope. Swage in ESCO tapering dies for Carbon Steel Single Sleeves. Aluminum Duplex Sleeves Aluminum Sleeves for Duplex eyes are manufactured from seamless extruded aluminum tubing to precise tolerances per DIN3093. Processed to enhance swaging, these sleeves provide an economical yet reliable swaged duplex eye for both IWRC and FC wire rope. Swage in Trimming Dies. 7

16 FERRULES AND END FITTINGS WARNING: All ESCO swage ferrules are designed for use with 6 x 19 class or 6 x 37 class, right regular lay, EIP, IWRC wire rope manufactured to U.S. specifications. If other constructions of wire rope are used with these fittings, the fabricator should make up and test sample assemblies to make sure they will perform adequately in the intended application. For complete instructions on how to install and swage ESCO swage fittings, refer to the ESCO Swaging Instructions Manual. Do not use ferrules for suspending loads. Ferrules are not intended for use in applications where loads are fully suspended overhead except in some log harvesting systems where adequate precautions are taken. Other fittings, such as sleeves and sockets, should be used for overhead work. ESCO CAST SCREWY CHOKER FERRULES Cast Screwy Choker Ferrules have set the standard for logging choker ferrules. The unique Cast Screwy contour matches the contour of the wire rope. That means maximum contact between the ferrule and rope for greater grip strength. The tapered end design eases insertion into choker hooks and butt hooks. Pushing hooks under logs is easier, too. EXCLUSIVE ESCO 40SS STAINLESS STEEL The popular ESCO 40SS Cast Stainless Steel is formulated especially for swaging applications. High initial ductility allows the ESCO 40SS Stainless Steel to flow around the wire rope during swaging for greater gripping strength and extremely high resistance to cracking and fracture. COLD TEMPERATURE DURABILITY ESCO 40SS swage sleeve alloy is an austenitic stainless steel alloy that maintains toughness at low temperatures. ESCO 40SS Swage Sockets are as tough at -60 F as at room temperature. ESCO 40SS Swage Sockets maintain higher toughness at low temperature than any swaged Carbon Steel Socket. Why worry choose ESCO in cold weather applications. Nothing outperforms ESCO 40SS Swage Sockets for toughness. ESCO CAST DRUMLINE FERRULES Screwy Drumline Ferrules incorporate the cast Screwy design in a shorter ferrule, designed specifically for attaching winchlines to winch drum pockets. Drumline Ferrules develop less holding power than choker ferrules and should only be used to attach wire rope to winch drums! Never load Drumline Ferrules directly always leave at least three wraps on the drum when it's under a load. MACHINED CHOKER FERRULES AND END FITTINGS ESCO offers Choker Ferrules and End Fittings machined from tough steels, engineered specifically for swaging applications. Manufactured to exacting specifications and continuously monitored to ensure the highest quality, these ferrules are available in the popular sizes at competitive prices. 16

21 TRACTOR LOGGING HARDWARE GET MORE PRODUCTION AT A LOWER COST! Wherever trees are harvested, you ll find ESCO wire rope rigging hardware on the job. Whether trees are large or small, ESCO supplies the hardware to handle the task. The exclusive ESCO Holdrite skidding system an industry standard simplifies and speeds the skidding process. See below for more information. ESCO HOLDRITE SYSTEM HOLDS DOWN SKIDDING TIME AND COSTS! Beat the high cost of conventional choker skidding with the ESCO Holdrite sliding winchline choker system. This multiple choker setting method avoids the problems of old fashioned one-at-atime choker setting. Sliding winchline hooks each with its own choker make the job faster. The operator drives through a group of logs after dropping the winchline at the first log. Each choker slides along the winchline and is set to the individual logs. When the winchline is reeled in, the Linender gathers the Holdrite hooks and pulls all the logs to the skidder. Park the skidder once, set the entire turn one time off the machine; winch in the load and head for landing. The Holdrite system saves labor, fuel and time, and that means more profits! 1. Pull out the winchline and connect the end choker from the Linender to the farthest log. 2. Slide the chokers back along the slack winchline and connect the remaining chokers as shown. 3. As the winchline is reeled in, the Linender gathers and pulls the other chokers. 4. All chokers are pulled to the fairlead. 21

33 SOCKETFAST RESIN COMPOUND REDUCES INSTALLATION HAZARDS ESCO SOCKETFAST resin is a convenient two-part liquid system. There are; NO dry powders to become airborne and create health hazards, NO acid etching, NO open flames, NO hot melting pots, NO handling hazardous molten metal, NO risk of accidental smoke alarm activation. CURES QUICKLY TO PROVIDE FULL RATED BREAK STRENGTH Using SOCKETFAST resin, wire rope assemblies develop full catalog break strength after curing for one hour at 70 F / 21 C; or they are ready for service after curing for only 5-10 minutes at 250 F / 120 C using a wraparound electric heater. With either ambient or elevated temperature cures, there is 30% less bedding in on initial loading than with zinc or babbitt metal. GREATER PROTECTION FROM HIGH TEMPERATURE PULLOUTS Utilizing standard elevator fittings, this convenient resin socketing system will withstand fire 50% longer than babbitt. ESCO SOCKETFAST resin equals or exceeds other performance characteristics of babbitt, and combines superior performance with a material cost only one-fifth that of babbitt. 34 SOCKETFAST RESIN COMPOUND SIX EASY STEPS FOR SOCKETFAST RESIN INSTALLATION 1. Slide the socket or fitting onto the wire rope, then place a wire seizing on the rope at the point where it will emerge from the base of the socket. For elevator applications, allow for turned-back strand. Note: Only use ESCO SOCKETFAST resin with fittings having tapered bowls such as rope and strand sockets. Do not use with straight sided fittings such as zinc ferrules Open the rope strands and broom, the individual strand wires, including the IWRC completely down to the seizing. Remove any fiber core in the length of the broom area. Clean the broomed wires with a solvent or degreasing agent that complies with EPA rules. Consult the wire rope supplier or manufacturer for recommended cleaning substances and methods. IMPORTANT ANT: It is important to remove all petroleum residue and any other coating from the broomed wires to assure satisfactory SOCKETFAST resin performance. 3. Position the broom in the socket bowl. IMPORTANT ANT: Make sure that the broomed wires are spread uniformly throughout the socket bowl area and the ends of the wires are level with the top of the socket bowl. Mount the assembly securely and align the axis of the rope and the fitting. Make sure that there is a minimum straight run of at 30 rope/strand diameters from the fitting. Most sockets will be poured vertically, as shown, but larger ones may be filled horizontally. Seal the socket neck with putty, duct tape, or a similar material to prevent leakage. Make sure the socket temperature is a least 65 F / 18 C and preferably F / C. CAUTION: Socket temperatures above 100 F / 38 C may cause premature hardening. 34

35 SOCKETFAST RESIN COMPOUND 4. Select the appropriate ESCO SOCKETFAST resin kit size, and make certain that the temperature of both liquid components is between F / C. If necessary, warm both sealed components by immersing in hot, not boiling, water. Note ote: Do not open the SOCKETFAST resin container until needed. Once opened, be prepared to use the entire container. With a stick or mixing blade, mix resin for a minute or two, being careful to scrape the sides and bottom of the container, to assure a uniform consistency with all filler in suspension. Next, add all of the catalyst to the container of resin and mix thoroughly. The large 4000 gram unit should be power mixed with an electric drill and Jiffy mixing blade. IMPORTANT ANT: Work safely. Wear appropriate goggles and protective clothing, and ventilate the work area appropriately when handling the resin and/or catalyst. Avoid contacting the skin or eyes with these materials. Avoid inhaling vapors or ingesting materials. If these do occur: Flush eyes with clean water for at least 15 minutes; remove contaminated clothing and wash with soap and water; remove patient to fresh air; do not induce vomiting. Give patient milk or water to dilute. Provide immediate medical attention. 5. Immediately pour the mix carefully into one side of the fitting, allowing the catalyzed liquid resin to displace the air. Fill to the top of the cone. Take a stiff wire strand and slowly work it up and down between the strands at several points to remove entrapped air At 75 F / 25 C, ESCO SOCKETFAST resin will harden in 15 minutes to the point where the socket may be moved to a more convenient area to cure completely. One hour after initial gelation, ESCO SOCKETFAST resin, when properly applied, will develop the full listed catalog break strength of the wire rope or strand. If a faster cure is required, heating the socket to 250 F / 120 C while using a Tempilstik to monitor the temperature, will cure the resin completely in 5 minutes. Heat the socket only: Preferred method is to use a wraparound electric heater pad. Never aim an open flame at the ESC SCO SOCK CKETF TFAST T Resin. In hazardous locations, hot water heating, or low pressure steam may be used. RESIN SOCKET REMOVAL Cut off the rope or strand as close to the base of the fitting as possible. Push out the ESCO SOCKETFAST resin with a press or drift pin. If necessary, heat the socket to F / C and the resin cone can then be pushed out. 6 35

36 SOCKETFAST RESIN COMPOUND HORIZONTAL SOCKETING In shops or storage areas where reels of large-diameter wire rope are stored, on-site socketing can save thousands of dollars in handling costs. This is also true in remote operations such as offshore drilling rigs and platforms and in mining areas. No need for transportation to a special socketing area! No need for elevated pouring towers! After the wire rope is prepared as described and after the fitting is installed, the assembled termination is placed in a horizontal position and blocked up to align the axes of the rope and the fitting. If a number of sockets are to be installed on a routine basis, a suitable cradle can be fabricated to simplify this alignment procedure. After checking the broom for uniform wire distribution, the annular space between the rope and the base of the fitting should be sealed with putty, leaving a small bleeder hole at the 12 o clock position. This temporary vent, which later will be sealed with putty, will allow air to escape during the pouring of the ESCO SOCKETFAST resin, thus assuring complete saturation of the resin at the apex of the broom. Insert a piece of damming material, such as cardboard or other flexible gasket material, and a wooden wedge at the larger end of the basket, as illustrated. Place the cut-to-size dam over the opening, bending back the upper portion to form a chute, and wedge it tightly in place. For open spelter sockets, insert a pin or dowel through the ears to serve as a pressure point for the block. FILL THE BASKET COMPLETELY Continue pouring until the resin begins to come out of the bleeder hole at the base of the fitting. Then, seal that hole with putty and continue pouring until the basket is filled completely and the level of ESCO SOCKETFAST resin in the chute remains constant. Excess material may be trimmed off after hardening, if desired. 36

37 A 4-STEP APPROACH TO ESCO SWAGING 1. WIRE ROPE ESCO swage fittings are designed for use on 6 x 19 or 6 x 37 Classification, Right Regular Lay, EIP, IWRC, and F.C. (for some aluminum sleeves) wire ropes manufactured to U.S. specifications. If other constructions of wire ropes are to be used, sample assemblies should first be swaged and properly tested. 2. FITTINGS Design the rigging for the job. Always select the correct rope size and the correct fitting type and size to meet the requirements of the specific application. 3. DIES To ensure desired performance, the fittings must be swaged in the correct die. Check dies periodically for wear using ESCO GO/ NO-GO gauges. Note: Clean dies and the die area before swaging. Grit and dirt will accelerate wear and can cause die breakage. Use EP No. 1 or No. 2 extreme-pressure grease to lubricate the dies and/or fittings before swaging. 4. SWAGING Follow the procedures in the ESCO Swaging Instructions Manual carefully. To ensure proper gripping strength of the swage fittings, the dies must close fully on the final pressing. IMPORTANT ANT: Do not allow sharp flashing to form. If excessive flash starts to form, do not close dies fully; work the fitting in subsequent pressings until the dies can be closed fully. Rotate the fittings 45 degrees (one-eighth of a turn) for the second pressing. Do not position the flash in the bottom of the die channel. The ESCO Swaging Instructions Manual provides complete instructions for the proper methods for swaging ESCO swage fittings using ESCO Mark series swagers. The instructions assume the ESCO Swagers are in good mechanical condition and operate at designated pressures. Older model swagers with worn mechanical or hydraulic components may require corrective maintenance or repair. Contact your ESCO representative for further information or assistance. Every swager operator should consult the Swaging Instructions Manual regularly to make sure recommended step-by-step swaging procedures are carefully followed. For complete information about your ESCO Swager, refer to the Press Operator's Manual that accompanies each swager. 37

49 ESCO DIE WEAR GAUGES MAINTAIN THE ACCURACY OF YOUR ESCO SWAGE DIES WITH ESCO DIE WEAR GAUGES! ESCO Die Gauges let you know when your ESCO Dies are worn beyond acceptable limits. Dies worn beyond the wear limit cannot swage fittings as intended and may result in unacceptable performance of the swaged assembly. Even though ESCO Dies are made to precise tolerances from special tool steels, normal use will cause wear. The rate of wear varies by the type of fitting, the use of lubrication, and the volume of fittings put through the dies. ESCO Die Gauges provide an easy and accurate way to check the condition of your ESCO Swage Dies. Regular checking allows you to know when dies are approaching the time for replacement. By ordering ahead, you can eliminate lost production time and maintain high quality swaged assembly standards. OPEN CHANNEL DIE GAUGES ESCO Die ESCO Die Wear Gauges Wt. Gauge Description "GO" Dia.
