1 Wood Samples Description: Golden Teak Wood Golden teak veneer, also called china teak veneer, originated from soth of China and Myanmar, is a hardwood veneer mainly used for furniture surface making and interior decoration. Golden teak veneer has nice vertical grains with bold white to light golden contrasting stripes. The contrasting grain can be tightly spaced or slightly wider but always alternating light and dark contrast. Golden teak veneer is almost exclusively quarter cut only to produce the characteristics stripe. The annual growth rings are often strongly defined and give the veneer a distinctive look. In veneers, the grain and color of golden teak veneer with cheaper cost is very similar to afrormosia veneer, which makes it one of more attractive hardwood veneers. Applications: Golden teak veneer is a product applied to the surface of the furniture to give it the appearance of being made of solid golden teak lumber. Sheesham Wood Heart wood raises from dark brown to a darker reddish brown. Generally has a straight grain though it can be interlocked sometime severely so. Red Marandi Wood Malaysian dark red Meranti timber varies in colour from pale pink / white to dark red / purple. The density can also vary substantially as there are numerous sub-species. It is generally easy to machine, and imported grade is mainly selects & better. Occasionally Meranti timber is affected by ambrosia beetle (visible as pinhole) when logs have been lying in tropical forests, but are killed off in kilning process. Often used as a false 'mahogany' for products such as windows, conservatories and doors. 3 General construction Boatbuilding Oak Wood Oak is the most widely used hardwood. There are more than 60 species of oak grown in the world, which can be separated into two basic varieties; white and red. The red variety is also known as black oak (a reference to its bark). Properties: Oak is a heavy, strong, light colored hardwood. It is ring porous, due to the fact that more and larger conductive vessels are laid down early in the summer, rather than later. Prominent rings and large pores give oak a course texture and prominent grain. Oak also has conspicuous medullary rays which can be seen as "flakes" in quarter sawed oak lumber. Partal Wood Partal Wood Properties : It is found natively in east Asia, Himalayas including Pakistan. In Pakistan it is available in hilly areas of murree, hazara, chitral etc. The Tree : It is a large, straight and evergreen tree. Leaves are needle like dark green. Flowers are monoecious (having male and female reproductive organs in the same plant). The sapwood and heartwood have no distinction. The wood is creamy white when first cut but turns to light brown to dark brownish with age. Wood is monoporous. Partal is very light and soft wood. It has low crushing strength (compressive strength) and bending strength( ability of wood beam to support a load for particular period of time). Durability : It is moderately durable wood only when used under cover. It cannot resist the attack of fungi or insects. Workability : It is easy to work with both hand and machine tools to an excellent finish, but needs extra care. Finishing : It is easy to get an excellent shiny finish adopting the necessary finishing procedure.

4 Uses : It can be used primary for making of boxes, packing cases, creates and for railway sleepers. It is used for making of gliders and aircraft parts. It can also be utilized for cheap furniture (indoor use), plywood (core), model making, light construction, cheap doors and windows. The Tree Leaves Bark Sheesham hardwood Sheesham, the mostly famous for being used in making furniture. It is the most useful timber source in Pakistan and India. Found throughout the sub-himalayan region, from the Indus to Assam. Sheesham, Shishan, Shisham, Sissoo or Sisu, the tree is also found in many parts of India, especially in the Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Assam. Large quantities of the Sheesham timber are available from Uttar Pradesh and the Punjab. The Sheesham wood is described as golden brown to deep brown in colour, with darker streaks that give the wood an attractive appearance. The wood is hard with a uniform and medium coarse texture. It has a good natural resistance to decay and is considered to be a popular carving and engraving wood in India. Sheesham lends itself perfectly to the cabinet making industry as it seasons well and does not warp or split. It is extremely durable and is one of the timbers least susceptible to dry-wood termites. The wood offers resistance to sawing and cutting but is excellent for turnery, takes a good polish and finishes to a smooth surface. Each piece of Sheesham furniture will have a unique colouring, thanks to the well defined grain of the wood, which can be brought to a fine finish by hand waxing. Sheesham furniture often features hand forged wrought iron work, known as Jali ironwork. As well as high quality furniture, Sheesham is also used for marine and aircraft grade plywood, charcoal for heating and cooking, musical instruments, ornamental turnery, carving, engraving, tool handles and sporting goods. Its root wood is used for tobacco pipes. In village industry Dalbergia sissoo (sheesham) is popular for doors and windows. Sheesham makes the perfect space for Antique Furniture. 5 Mango wood is a hard, dense wood which is made into a variety of arts, crafts and furniture. It displays color properties unlike most other woods, with green, brown and yellow hues. Mango wood shows the best coloring and texture as the different carving and cut strokes reveal more diverse ranges of grain. Mango wood is usually a sustainable resource as the mango wood trees are generally replanted after being cut down. Mango wood vases, bowls and furniture is a great way to help offset carbon emissions by using a sustainable product. Hardness Factor : Moderately hard and dense. It s hard.enough to make everyday pieces of chairs, wardrobes even beds and kitchen tables. Special Characteristics : Mango Wood Is Renewable. It has a fine to medium texture with straight grains. The grains can also be interlocked and figured. Best Uses : 1) Mango wood is suitable for small carving and painting decorative items and not very suitable for large items. 2) Widely used in coffee tables, cabinets, Chairs, Wardrobes and Kitchen Tables. NEEM WOOD Neem Wood consists of sapwood and heartwood. The sapwood is grayish white and the heartwood is red, turning to reddish brown on exposure. The wood is dull to lustrous, aromatic but without any characteristic taste. Neem Wood is hard, moderately heavy, narrowly in terlocked with uneven grains, medium to coarse textured and beautifully mottled. The wood seasons well in open stacks placed under cover. It is durable even in open situations and is not attacked by insects. The wood is like mahogany and the working quality is almost like that of teak, but takes poor polish. It possesses good nail-holding capacity. The wood is used much for construction of cart-axles and cart-wheels, agricultural implements, furniture, bottom drawers, door panels, sash-frames and other building materials, yokes, naves and felloes, ornamental ceiling helms, oars, oil-mills, cigar-boxes, drums, carved images, toys, trunks and chest and in ship- and boat-building. To a limited extent, the wood is used for making shells of opium packing cases. The wood can be a source of plywood. It is a fair board wood. Mersawa Wood Mersawa is one of the common names applied to the genus Anisoptera, which has about 15 species distributed from the Philippine Islands and Malaysia to Pakistan. Names applied to this wood vary with the source, and three names are generally used in the lumber trade: krabak (Thailand), mersawa (Malaysia), and palosapis (Philippines). Characteristics :

6 Mersawa wood is light in color and has a moderately coarse texture. Freshly sawn heartwood is pale yellow or yellowish brown and darkens on exposure to air. Some wood may show a pinkish cast or pink streaks, but these eventually disappear on exposure to air. The wood weighs between 544 and 752 kg/m3 (34 and 47 lb/ft3) at 12% moisture content and about 945 kg/m3 (59 lb/ft3) when green. The sapwood is susceptible to attack by powderpost beetles, and the heartwood is not resistant to termites. The heartwood is rated as moderately resistant to fungal decay and should not be used under conditions that favor decay. The heartwood does not absorb preservative solutions readily. The wood machines easily, but because of the presence of silica, the wood severely dulls the cutting edges of ordinary tools and is very hard on saws. Primary Uses : The major volume of mersawa will probably be used as plywood because conversion in this form presents considerably less difficulty than does the production of lumber.
