5 CORPORA T/o/! / Amherst. Ohio 441 TECHNICAL PUBLICATION 43-3-I SECTION I EQUIPMENT FAMILIARIZATION P-A 111 A Figure 1 - Two Inch Slot Nozzle, Part Number DESIGN The Slot Nozzle is designed to deposit a film of hot melt adhesive. The Slot Nozzle is also designed to be mounted on an H-2A Automatic Hot Melt Gun. The H-2A Automatic Hot Melt Gun provides remote heating of the Slot Nozzle and controls the hot melt adhesive ON/OFF cycling. PATTERN BLADES The Slot Nozzle is shipped with one each.4 inch (.1 mm) thick and.1 inch (.25 mm) thick blank pattern blades. Precut pattern blddes may be ordered from the Specials Department. When ordering precut pattern blades use part number Xxx XXX and give a complete description of the required cuts. Blank pattern blades are cut out by the customer in the locations and widths required to provide the proper final deposit pattern. To allow for thicker film deposits of hot melt adhesive, the pattern blades can be stacked one upon another within the Slot Nozzle. When stacked, the pattern blade cutout measurements must be identical. C NORDSON CORPORATICN 1981 SUPERSEDES 8 II Rights Reserved

6 APPLICATIONS Nordson CORPORATION /Amherst. Ohio 441 TECHNICAL PUB1 /CAT/ON Adaptable to a wide variety of applications, the Slot Nozzle can be utilized on installations involving non-wovens, labeling, tape/label and envelope manufacturing, business forms and various other applications. The Slot Nozzle can be used for continuous film application or variable intermittent film application. When used in conjunction with a Nordson solid-state electronic timer, Slot Nozzles are capable of a wide variety of adjustable, intermittent patterns of adhesive film. Due to substrate coatings, substrate porosity, substrate feed rate, etc., precise cutoff may be difficult to obtain in an intermittent application. FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION The Slot Nozzle distributes and deposits hot melt materials in a pattern determined by the pattern blade. The deposit thickness is generally affected by six factors. These six factors are: 1. Pattern blade thickness. 2. Hot melt material hydraulic pressure. 3. Substrate feed rate. 4. Substrate tension. 5. Uniformity of downward pressure across the width of substrate. 6. Viscosity of the material. While these six factors interact one with the other, it may generally be said that: 1. By changing the hot melt material input pressure, a.4 inch (.1 mm) thick pattern blade can extrude a deposit from.1 inch (1 mil) to.1 inch (1 mils) thick. 2. By changing the hot melt material input pressure, a.1 inch (.25 mm) thick pattern can extrude a deposit from.5 inch (5 mils) to.2 inch (2 mils) thick. lssued 4181 SUPERSEDES LITHO U.S.A.
