2 The Curious Cal Lab Manager I was calibrating tools for more than 11 years before I became the lab manager. We make equipment for the military. Consistency and quality are important because lives are at stake. We were experiencing significant quality issues on the equipment made with torque screwdrivers. I knew I was following the ISO 6789 to the letter, but quality was not where it was supposed to be. I went out on the floor to watch the team assembling equipment. The first thing I noticed is that there is a discrepancy between the way a torque screwdriver is tested in the lab and how it is used during application. While I was asking one of the workers some questions he pointed to a screwdriver and said We never have any problems with that one. I called the company and spoke with their Vice President of Engineering. Instead of explaining, he asked me some very interesting questions. He had me walk over to the recently purchased torque tester and push down on the transducer. I immediately started getting readings but there was no tool on the tester. Downforce on the tester resulted in very unacceptable reading variations. I knew my process was good and was confident that we had identified the source of the problem Then he asked me a question. Did I think it was just the tester or could it be both the tester and the screwdrivers? I asked the VP to test the Vice President to test the screwdrivers on their equipment. That would eliminate the last variable. Sturtevant Richmont tested the screwdrivers using ISO Then they tested the same screwdrivers with 10 pounds of down force and they recorded the results. Next they tested the screwdrivers with 20 pounds of down force. The results were eye opening. Throughout the tests the Sturtevant Richmont screwdrivers remained stable and their repeatability was excellent. The screwdrivers significantly exceeded the ASME B107.14M requirement of +/- 6%. When the down force increased to 20 lbs of downward pressure the PM Series screwdrivers became even more stable. The other screwdrivers did not provide anywhere near the repeatability or accuracy of results. I finally understood the problem was two-fold. First the tester I had just purchased was not properly designed or built. Second, all but one brand of torque screwdrivers failed to perform as needed. In fact all through those 70+ years that we ve been in business, we ve listened to our customers. We listen because what they say is valuable and important. When customers talked about our torque screwdrivers they taught us a thing or two. The customers provided an interesting way to answer the question "Is there a screwdriver more accurate and reliable than this one?" Assembly Versus the Lab Torque screwdrivers are all about repeatability and accuracy. The ISO standard calls for +/- 6%. How well does the screwdriver provide repeatability within that accuracy range? You can get almost no indication of the result by holding that screwdriver. It is nearly impossible to evaluate a torque screwdriver by looking at it. You can hold it in your hand and feel the heft. You can turn the handle to see how the clutch mechanism feels. Maybe you can even see how many degrees of turn it takes to slip the clutch and then come to the next dwell, or where the screwdriver resets itself and is ready for the next fastener. You get a slightly better view of the quality of a torque screwdriver when you put it on a tester and have the motor turn the screwdriver. The good news is you have fully eliminated the human influence on readings. Accuracy on the tester is the first step to accuracy to screwdriver output in the assembly cell. How a screwdriver is tested in the lab and how it is used out on the shop floor are two entirely different things. The biggest difference is that assemblers use down force to ensure contact between the screwdriver bit and the fastener. To better understand the differences we put our screwdrivers on the tester. Our testers are designed to include down force as part of the equation. We created a three-step process: Test the screwdriver ten (14) times using the ISO 6789 prescribed process and record results. Note: The ISO 6789 standard does not recognize any down force as part of the test process. Test the same screwdriver again without changes and add 10 pounds of down force during the test. Test 14 times and record results. Test the same screwdriver again without changes, add an additional 10 pounds to bring the total down force being applied to 20 pounds. Recently we watched some torque screwdrivers being tested under this same process as listed above. The results were eye opening. One of the first torque screwdrivers we watched being tested was set for 70 inch ounces and with 10 pounds of down force it clicked over at 55 inch ounces. That is about 79% of the target torque value. As down force weight increased, the clutch clicked over sooner and released after applying even less torque. If you are starting with a tolerance of +/- 6% and then account for the changes in output as a result of down force, can you calculate the actual torque value? Can you afford to have that kind of accuracy in your product? If you have this challenge, take a good look at the auditing program for data that will help you assess the challenge. Because torque screwdrivers are +/- 6% the ISO 6789 standard calls for a tester that is accurate to +/- 1.5% full-scale value. We test the screwdrivers on instruments that are.5% +/- of the indicated value. All of the test/calibration equipment that we sell and use functions with Indicated values. Using a tester based on IV ensures significantly greater test accuracy at the lower end of the scale. In addition our screwdriver tester reads to 3 digits to the right of the decimal point.
