Osprey Pens About Us We are a manufacturer for custom writing instruments and fountain pens. Our writing instruments can be characterized as vintage inspired modern production fountain pens. We strive to achieve a balance of cost effectiveness, aesthetics, and utilitarian value in our products. Our goal at Osprey Pens is to create writing solutions and writing instruments that can improve the world. We feel that we can improve the world by creating products that will expand the number of Fountain Pen users. We feel that we can also help to improve the world by providing multi-role writing instruments and solutions to schools, learning institutions, and to students. We hope to win over new artists, writers, and users towards traditional fountain pens and bottled ink. Our platforms are designed to cater to a variety of users including: artists, writers, calligraphers, fountain pen users, and vintage fountain pen enthusiasts. We will be updating our website with our initiatives and programs for Schools in the USA. Youtube: Facebook: 1

Overview of Types of Inserts for Scholar and Milano: The modular threading for our Scholar and Milano allow you the advantage of being able to change and use multiple self-contained inserts. Our modular inserts allow you to quickly switch your writing style and nib preference by unscrewing one nib unit and screwing on the other. Included in the price of the pen, you have a choice of 4 Standard Stainless Steel Nibs Units (NU) to select from: o o o o NU - Fine tip Chrome Finish, # 6, Stainless Steel NU - Med tip Chrome Finish, # 6, Stainless Steel NU - Fine tip Gold Plated, # 6, Stainless Steel NU - Med tip Gold Plated, # 6, Stainless Steel The Osprey Scholar and Milano come standard fitted with the below insert which utilizes a plastic feed and size 6 nib unit. This insert is optimized for conservative writing setups and connects to an international converter system. It is designed to not leak, dry up, and allows for economical operation of the fountain pen with cartridge converter. For nibs that require more ink flow (such as flex nibs, calligraphy nibs, etc), you may see that your regular stock feed might not give you adequate flow. Modify the plastic/stock feed by gently widening the ink channel using a fine blade/ xacto knife. Mk1 stock Insert (Size 6 nib friction fit) For calligraphy enthusiasts and for others looking for a generous flex tied with copious flow of ink, we encourage you to choose the Zebra G nib unit. Zebra G nib unit screws onto a Milano or Scholar. 3
Mk2 Zebra Insert (Eye dropper function only.) Mk3 Zebra Insert (Converter capable / eye dropper) Osprey Milano Fountain Pen The Osprey Milano was designed as a simple no frills daily writer that balances ergonomics and aesthetics. Beautifully crafted with ebonite (hard rubber) in gorgeous colors, its modular design offers 8 inter-changeable nib units, including Zebra G super flex and the luxury 14K gold nib units! Nib Units are interchangeable between both the Scholar and Milano. The pen comes with a standard international cartridge converter system. The pen uses a standard international size cartridge converter and has predictable writing characteristics. Thick ebonite walls provide the hand with a warm wood like feeling and give the pen a protective encasement. Cared for, this pen can easily last a couple of hundred years and has the potential to be an heirloom. Most size 6 nibs can be fitted and should work well in the Milano. Size 6 offerings from Jowo and Bock seem particularly well suited for this design. The beauty of its friction fit threaded insert will not be lost on those who notice its suitability for calligraphy Measurements Length (capped): mm/5.59 Length (uncapped): mm/5.03 Length (posted): mm/6.51 Diameter (barrel): 13.7 mm/0.54 Diameter (section): mm/ Weight (all): 26 g Weight (cap): 10 g Weight (body): 16 g 4
Osprey Scholar Fountain Pen The Osprey Scholar is named in honor of the American School System which led the world by being the first to formally incorporate hand writing into an existing educational curriculum. For those who prefer the feel of a more slender pen, the Osprey Scholar is perfect. The Scholar uses the same modular inserts as the Osprey Milano allowing for a common standardization of nibs. For example, the same Zebra G insert that allows you to convert a Milano into a flex pen will also work on the Scholar. Length (capped): 152.4mm / 6.00 Length (uncapped): 138 mm/ 5.43 Length (posted): 178mm / 7.00 Diameter (barrel): 12.45mm/.49 Diameter (section): 10.67mm /.42 Weight (all): 19g Weight (cap): 6g Weight (body): 13g Dismantling the Milano and Scholar: Dismantle your fountain pen by screwing out the section. The converter is installed by pushing it in to the section. To ensure good sealing, you may coat the tip of the converter with a small amount of Silicone grease (below is a cross section. We have coated a small amount of silicone grease on all threaded sections, but for long term maintenance, we suggest you do the same to ensure that you do not ruin your threads by overtightening) 5
Scholar Breakdown: Insert Section Cartridge Barrel 1. Take out the section from the barrel. 2. Remove converter from section Method 1: Switching inserts with Nib and feed still in Insert Switching inserts with Nib and feed still in Insert (please be careful, when you use this method there is more risk of damaging nib and feed. Do not use this method if Insert is stuck tightly. If you coat the threads on your inserts with small amount of silicone grease, it makes it much easier to take on and off. You can safely use this method but you need some soft flexible material for leverage. We try to provide you with a rubber tube, but basically you can use a piece of rubber, cut out a strip of material from Latex/rubber gloves or you can use soft jaw pliers (you can improvise soft jaw pliers by wrapping electrical/other soft tape around the jaws of a plier). Get the section by itself. Slip a piece of rubber tubing around the nib and feed for additional leverage. The trick is to use the rubber tube to hold the insert in place with your left hand. Using your right hand to rotate the section off or on the insert. 6
Rotate section upwards/to the right to tighten Rotate downward/ to the left to loosen.. Use your fingers to firmly grip and hold insert in place. Method 2: damaging feed and insert. Use Allen Key). (Much Safer method with less risk of Remove Nib and Feed from insert by pulling straight out Use Allen Key with Teflon tape around the end for leverage Remove Barrel and Converter from Fountain pen Insert Allen Key into section, make sure the fit is snug. If not, you can add extra Teflon tape. Rotate section off the insert Reassembling the Scholar or Milano: 7
1 2 3 To reassemble the Scholar, first take the insert. It is recommended to use the rubber tubing/latex glove or soft jaw pliers. Step 1: Fit the insert back into the section by holding the insert in place while rotating the section to the right. If you put a small dab of silicone grease on the threads of the inserts, it helps with sealing and helps you remove the insert from the section when required. Make sure that the section is nice and tight on the insert. If it is loose, there is chance of leaking. Step 2: Take the cartridge converter and insert into section. You will notice a small plastic nipple from the insert in the section. The trick is to push your converter in and twist slightly so that it is firmly secured around the plastic nipple. Step 3: Screw the Barrel section back on. Filling a pen converter with a converter: A fountain pen converter is a device tool that allows you to draw ink into a fountain pen. It has an opening that is identical to an ink cartridge that plugs into a fountain pen nib. Just turn the knob counterclockwise to force air out of the converter, and turn it clockwise to suck ink in. It is advisable to do this over a non porous, easy to clean surface. It may also be a good idea to put down some scratch paper to catch any ink spills and prevent your surface from staining. The fountain pen and converter should be thoroughly cleaned before switching to a different ink. Cleaning is recommended to avoid contamination and promote good flow. Expel the air in the piston converter by turning the knob counter clockwise. Dip the section of the fountain pen, ensuring that the nib is submerged (in the ink) and turn the converter knob clockwise to draw the ink in to the converter Hold the pen with the nib facing upwards and turn the converter knob slowly in a counter clockwise direction to expel air. It is a good idea to use a tissue to capture excess ink drops. 8
An alternative way to fill is using a syringe to fill the international cartridge converter and then attach to the Milano Section. Cleaning and Maintenance: Use ink that is designed for fountain pens. Do not use India ink as it will clog up a fountain pen. The fountain pen and converter should be thoroughly cleaned before switching to a different ink. Cleaning is recommended to avoid contamination and promote good flow. Always maintain proper pen hygiene Thoroughly wash the pen when you switch to a different ink. You can safely use a 20% ammonia 80 % distilled water solution to clean out your pen. Tips/Hints for resolving common issues with Zebra G Insert (mk2 and Mk3): Prep Zebra G/Calligraphy Nib: Make-sure your Zebra G nib is properly Prepped: (Calligraphy nibs come coated with oils, sometimes if it was not prepped enough, the oils can prevent ink flow. If you are having any flow issues, I would recommend re-prepping the Zebra G nib (you can use alcohol, a match, or even a Potato as mentioned in the below reference link). Make-sure your ebonite feed is clean. As mentioned above, particles, oils, and other items may sometimes get caught in the Ebonite feed channel and may be the cause for bad flow/performance. If I notice I need more flow, I will usually take the zebra nib and ebonite feed out of the insert, widen the channel with an exacto knife and then scrub with a toothbrush + solution of dish-soap and ammonia. Make-sure you wash the feed thoroughly, I recommend using a brush to scrub the feed channel. Maintaining good pen hygiene and washing the feed well can greatly improve flow. Heat Setting: With the ebonite feed, you want your nib and feed to have a good adhesion. This is achieved through heat setting. Basically, when you flex the nib, you want the feed to be sticking close to the nib and you want to minimize the gap (which leads to railroading/lack of ink flow). There are two types of heat-setting you can do. A. A light maintenance heat set: This is light gap/railroading issues. Make-sure your Zebra Nib has been prepped, that the feed is clean, and then heat set. To heat-set, basically submerge the Nib and feed in Boiling water. Then pinch and hold the nib and feed together for about 30 seconds until they fuse. With a proper heat-set where there is no gap between the nib and feed, one can resolve most flow issues. 9
*Trick: Use a small o-ring to hold the zebra G and feed together onto a toothpick (use the BBQ skewer/long toothpick and then dip into boiling water for about a minute. Then pull out and using a towel or glove pinch and hold the nib and feed together. Then insert into insert. B. Heavy duty heat-set using a heat gun (similar to vintage ebonite feed heat setting). Using your Milano or Scholar on Eye-Dropper Mode: If the ink flow is not enough from the International cartridge converter, you can take it off and Eye-dropper the Milano or scholar. This gives much greater ink flow for flexing and for your Zebra G (but please keep in mind your pen will not be as portable in Eye-dropper mode). We will be releasing a new ink tank that will fit both your Scholar and Milano which will have more ink capacity than a standard international converter soon. Steps for Eye-dropper Mode for Milano: Put a small layer of Teflon Tape with silicone grease on the 2 threaded portions of the Osprey Scholar or Milano to covert the pen to Eye-dropper mode. Removing End cap to prime converter: The Milano fountain pen has a removable endcap or pinion. If you are using the Zebra G mk3 insert with cartridge converter, one trick that you can do is to remove the end piece so that you have access to prime or twist your international cartridge converter. 10
