Place post in hole so end with the screws (see Step 2) goes in first. Make post meet stringline and use spirit level to make plumb. To brace post, use nail gun and nails to fix lengths of timber to post and run down to pegs in ground. Brace 2 adjacent sides of post. Repeat to erect and brace other post on this side of pergola. 4 Erect and brace posts on other side of pergola. Check all components against actual unit as it is being built before cutting to size. Here s how 1 Using set-out paint, mark out post positions. Clamp a block to post at this point. Clamp a second block to other post on this side of pergola, using spirit level to make it level with the first. 6 Place side beam (B) on blocks so each end overhangs post by 455mm. Screw to posts. Use straightedge and spirit level to transfer level of side beam to posts on other side. steps 7 Attach cross beams (C) to side beams.

Place other cross beams against inside of posts at each end.

8 To create shape on end beam (D), first use square to draw a line across centre.

Stretch chalk line from this point to corner of beam nearest this point. Flick chalk line to mark line.

7 8 9 9 To create angle on end of beam, mark a 35 angle going from uncut edge of beam down to cut side.

10 10 Place end beam against end of side beams so uncut edge is flush with top of side beam.

Repeat Steps 8-10 for end beam at other end of side beam.

4 steps 7 Attach cross beams (C) to side beams. Position 1 cross beam so its centre is at middle of side beam. Place other cross beams against inside of posts at each end. Position other beams so they sit centrally between end and centre cross beams. 8 To create shape on end beam (D), first use square to draw a line across centre. Along this line, measure and mark 160mm from side of beam. Stretch chalk line from this point to corner of beam nearest this point. Flick chalk line to mark line. Repeat to mark a line on other end of beam. Use power saw to cut along marked lines To create angle on end of beam, mark a 35 angle going from uncut edge of beam down to cut side. Cut along this line. Repeat for other end of beam Place end beam against end of side beams so uncut edge is flush with top of side beam. Also ensure that end beam overhangs side beams equally. Screw in place. Repeat Steps 8-10 for end beam at other end of side beam. 11 Using handsaw, cut posts flush with top of pergola. 12 Lay out shade cover (E) on top of pergola. Predrill and screw bamboo to cross beams and end beams. To cut bamboo panels as required, snip wire joining the bamboo a little longer than required. Fold back over bamboo and twist around wire remaining on screen. 13 Mix concrete in wheelbarrow and shovel into holes around posts. You will have to cut from both sides of sleeper to go through the full depth. Cut these to same lengths as full pond sides already laid. 17 Lay smaller pond sides on those laid and screw together. Make joins on opposite side of corner to pond sides below Spread paving sand on inside of pond. Lay pond liner so it overhangs pond sides. Remove creases in pond liner. 19 Fill pond with water. With staple gun, work your way around pond, stapling liner to pond sides. Fold and cut corners to make neat. 20 Install pond filter, pump and fountain following product instructions. Lay polished black pebbles on base of pond to disguise hose and hold fountain in position. Spread more pebbles around pond BETTER HOMES AND GARDENS, CHRISTMAS 2015 bhg.com.au

Nail blocking to posts to support decking there. 24 To create deck overhang on the pond, cut back second-last joist by 45mm at each end.

Repeat for other end of pergola. Place last joist against end plates and nail.

25 Screw vertical supports (K) to end of joists and make plumb. On side joist, notch top of support so it will sit flush with face of joist.

DECK 21 Place 1 Handiblock footing block on lowest point of ground so centre of block is 252mm below finished deck. Place other blocks down along line of bearers level with this one, excavating below block if required. 22 Lay bearers (G) in centre of blocks so they overhang posts by 300mm. Trim bearers that butt into pond sides. Place spirit level across bearers to check all are level. For bearers against posts, screw through bearer into post to secure. 23 Lay first joist (H) flush with end of bearers and overhanging them at each end by 308mm. Lay further joists so they are spaced 450mm apart. Nail blocking to posts to support decking there. 24 To create deck overhang on the pond, cut back second-last joist by 45mm at each end. Butt end plate (I) against end of third-last joist and against cut end of second-last joist. Screw end plate to these joists. Repeat for other end of pergola. Place last joist against end plates and nail. Fill gap between last and second-last joist with outriggers (J) to further support overhang. 25 Screw vertical supports (K) to end of joists and make plumb. On side joist, notch top of support so it will sit flush with face of joist. 26 Fix first decking board (L) using 52mm galvanised decking nails and nail gun. Use offcut of decking and 5mm plastic packer so board overhangs end of each joist by 27mm. Make board overhang side joists by at least 35mm. 27 Continue laying decking using a 5mm plastic packer to maintain an even gap between them. Every 5 or so boards, measure how much deck is still to be laid at each end of the boards. If different, adjust gap slightly on subsequent boards until the distance is equal BETTER HOMES AND GARDENS, CHRISTMAS 2015 bhg.com.au

5. Tie the look together by theming with red in flowers, like this stunning bromeliad, along with cushions and your tea set.

29 Where decking overhangs side joists, mark a line on boards 27mm from outside of joist below. Use power saw to cut along this line.

Continue laying face boards (N) under this. Butt 1 end into pond and make other end overhang side joist by 22mm.

31 Nail pond face boards (P) to pond side flush with the top and overhanging at each end by 22mm.

32 Cut and fix pond top boards (R) to cover the top edge of the pond sides all the way around.

Butt 1 end into pond and make other end overhang side joist by 22mm. Attach side boards (O) to side joists and vertical supports at sides. 31 Nail pond face boards (P) to pond side flush with the top and overhanging at each end by 22mm. Nail pond side boards (Q) between these and face boards under the deck. 32 Cut and fix pond top boards (R) to cover the top edge of the pond sides all the way around. Make boards overhang pond face and side boards by 5mm and mitre corners. Place step (S) in position. 33 Apply Cabot s Deck and Exterior Stain to boards. (We used it tinted to Blackburn.) 34 Use pond water treatment to prepare pond water for fish.
