Tubular parts shall be manufactured from medium gauge steel tube to BS Seats shall be manufactured from Laminated HDPE 12mm thick. 1 Read installation instructions thoroughly before commencing the erection of the unit. 2 Do not tighten fastenings until unit is completely assembled unless otherwise stated. 3 Excavate foundations as shown on page 2. 4 If installing Sputnik as a complete unit, place Sputnik into prepared foundations, resting on a 75mm brick and set over at an angle of 5 degrees. If necessary support in this position. 5 Backfill with concrete mixed to the following ratio:4 parts gravel, 2 parts sand, 1 part cement. Amount of concrete required = 0.22 cub.mtrs. 6 Prevent use of equipment until concrete has fully set, approx. 48 hours. 7 If installing Sputnik with parts supplied individually, or maintaining, stand spindle (item B) on end and press bearing cone (with rollers attached) (item K) over spindle and down to bottom bearing diameter. 8 Take length of tube, and slide over spindle. Ram tube down spindle onto bearing cone a number of times in order to drive bearing cone over bearing diameter. Ensure bearing seats up to shoulder. Note: do not use any other method or bearing may be damaged. 9 Remove length of tube from spindle. 10 Drive bearing cup, (part of item K) (without rollers) into bottom bearing housing (item J). Note: use hide mallet or wooden block to drive bearing to avoid risk of damage. 11 Fit bottom housing over tube protruding from bottom of main body assembly (item A). 12 Apply grease liberally to bottom bearing. 13 Slide spindle through main body assembly locating two halves of bottom bearing together. SPECIFICATION INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS Welds are from copper free wire diameter 1mm to BS EN 440 (1995). Metal parts coated with low lead polyester paint to BS EN 71 part 3 (1995). 14 Fit top bearing housing (item U) over spindle and over tube protruding from top of main body assembly as shown in detail Drive bearing cup (item K) (without rollers) into top bearing housing as shown in detail 5. Note: use hide mallet or wooden block to drive bearing to avoid risk of damage. 16 Apply Fina Ceran HV, or equillevant grease liberally to top bearing. Drive bearing cone (with rollers attached) over top bearing diameter of spindle until it locates in bearing cup. Note: place length of tube over spindle and against the bearing and, using hammer on tube, drive home bearing, in order to avoid risk of damage to bearing. 17 Remove length of tube from spindle and discard. 18 Slide spacer (item F) over spindle and onto top of bearing. Screw two back nuts (item L) down spindle clamping onto spacer.tighten firmly. Ensure no vertical play is apparent between spindle and main body. (Any play would indicate that the back nuts were not tight enough, and bearings were not together). 19 Slide locking ring assembly (item C) onto spindle against back nut spacer. 20 Screw locking nut (item S) onto spindle and tighten firmly against locking ring assembly. Fasten with M4 x 6 socket set screw. 21 Place dome casting (item E) onto locking ring assembly (positioning locating lug on dome casting into hole on locking ring) Secure, screwing M12 x 50 lg pent screw (item M) in tapped hole in spindle using pentagonal wrench (item V) supplied, tighten screw fully. 22 Secure seats (item D) to main body assembly using M8x25mm lg pentagon button hd screws (item P) and safety fasteners (item R). Fully tighten screws. 23 Apply grease to bearings through grease nipples. Sputnik Page 1 of 3
2 Note: All protruding screw threads to be peened over to remove sharp edges. Lifting aid will be required when installing this piece of equipment.
