4 The raw material wood Wood is one of the oldest construction and working materials, and accompanies each of us through our entire lives, from the cradle to the grave. A long tradition in craftsmanship and in industry have provided experience of how to use the right wood in a suitable way for the various applications. It is possible to process, screw, glue, drill, saw, groove, turn and carve wood with simple tools. Wood is a consumer product and a commodity, and also a healthy raw material. Wood is the everyday embodiment of Nature in its purest form, an environmentally friendly product with an extremely positive ecological profile. Wood is also a material with highly varying properties: The various types, the location, the age of the tree, heartwood or sapwood, trunk wood or knotted wood all lead to an extremely wide range of biological, chemical, technological and visual characteristics. This is problematic for rationalised, industrialised processing but, on the other hand, the variety of characteristics and appearance brings its own advantages: it is possible to satisfy the desires and requirements of the consumers for the product in a selective way. Strength and load-bearing capacity in construction timber, durability in windows and external doors, colour and wood texture for furniture and in interior fittings, hardness for parquet flooring or rational production technology and excellent product properties in pulp and paper the right wood is available for every application concept. For the ideal construction and design of products made, the material properties are crucial, such as the density, strength, the elasticity module, resilience, natural durability, permeability, extractive levels, anatomical structure, cell dimensions, the knottiness and the grain orientation. An analysis of the requirements for the product and, derived from that, for the wood material makes it possible to select the ideal type. Fastening, turning grey, surface treatment, yellowing Fastening timber components is best carried out using stainless steel screws that will not rust. When working with galvanised screws, the layer of zinc may become damaged, which can lead to corrosion and cause the wood to discolour. In addition, species such as Douglas fir which are rich in tannin react to contact with iron, with the timber becoming darker. Wood used outdoors is permanently exposed to the weather and the effects of UV radiation and rain. This brings about changes in the chemical composition of the timber, causing constituents to wash out. The timber turns grey in the open air in the course of a natural process. Surface treatment with suitable coatings can offer a relative degree of protection from moisture and UV rays. When used in the open air, wood has to be painted regularly at least twice a year to maintain the appearance and effectiveness of the coating. Wood that is used in the interior and so is not exposed to weathering turns yellow after some time through a natural process. Wood protection increases the service life Besides the individual species selected and its natural durability, the service life of timber can be significantly influenced by structural timber protection. If wood is exposed to high levels of moisture for lengthy periods, it will be damaged by fungal decay. This can be prevented by the proper planning of structural measures to protect the wood at the execution stage. Where possible, upright, load-bearing timber components should never come into direct contact with the ground in external areas. To protect them from splashing, it is advisable to maintain a minimum gap of approx. 15 cm (mounting on supports). Horizontal wooden structures should likewise avoid any direct contact with the ground and be kept at a sufficient distance from the subsoil. To prevent water from collecting, horizontal areas should always have a slight gradient. Measures to extend the durability and service life en structures: Construct timber components so that water can always run off Prevent waterlogging Ensure adequate ventilation Avoid contact with the ground Use stainless steel screws that will not rust Clean and maintain timber components at regular intervals Manual protection is possible, e.g. by dipping, painting or spraying Another effective method for extending the service life is pressure treatment. Dip pressure treatment uses either green or yellow colouring. The process involves dipping all of the wood into a bath preservative for anything from a few minutes to several hours. This process is most commonly used during the treatment en components such as shuttering, custom-cut construction wood, windows and doors. The coloured additives are also useful for control purposes, but are not meant to be weatherproof. The weather resistance of the pressure treatment itself is based on the fastening of the salt solution on the wood. Freshly pressure-treated woods therefore need to be protected against rain for several days. The wood-protection agent itself is generally a water-soluble, colourless or coloured salt concentrate. It contains biocidal active agents. Dip pressure treatment is possible only with a wood moisture content of less than 50%. It acts preventively for wood that is covered or out in the open air without contact to the ground and is effective against fungi and insects that destroy the wood. If the wood is stored properly, it is also effective in preventing blue stain and mould. After drying, the pressure-treated goods can be coated with any paint. 5 FSC FSC stands for "Forest Stewardship Council " and is an international certification system for the forestry industry. Ten globally applicable principles guarantee that wood and paper products with the FSC seal originate from responsibly managed forests. These principles are defined in an international standard. The FSC standard stipulates that the ecological functions of the forest must be preserved, protects endangered animal and plant species against dying out and safeguards the rights of the original inhabitants and employees. However, the belief that an FSC-certified forest is completely untouched nature is wide of the mark. It is forest that is managed, but according to strict principles and criteria that can preserve the forest as an eco-system in the long term. The FSC was set up in 1993 as a result of the environmental summit in Rio. It is a non-governmental, charitable organisation that is dedicated to promoting the use of the forests on our planet in a simultaneously environmentally friendly, socially acceptable and economically sustainable manner. The FSC brings together all the actors who have an interest in preserving the forests in the long term: company owners in the wood and forest industry, environmental associations, unions, representatives of civil society and indigenous peoples. All of the interest groups involved are recognized on an equal basis. This concept is reflected in the chamber structure of the organisation: none of the three chambers can be overruled. And: the FSC is transparent. As a rule, certified businesses are inspected annually on site by independent experts and the results are then published. Source: PEFC TM PEFC TM (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes) is a strictly controlled forest certification programme designed to monitor sustainably managed forests. The PEFC TM is, so to speak, a global forest protection organisation. With a PEFC TM -certified product, you can be sure that it comes from sustainably managed and controlled forests. Among other things, this means that: Less wood is felled than is being cultivated The forest is always renewed accordingly A safe habitat for plants and animals is preserved Guarantee of a legal origin of log wood High standards in occupational health and safety for forestry work Safeguarding of employee rights In this way, the rights of people who are dependent on the forest or live off it are safeguarded The international resolutions of the subsequent conference after the Rio environmental summit in 1992 form the basis for the certification system of sustainable forest management The primary objective of the PEFCTM is to promote the economy, ecology and social compatibility, as well as the documentation and improvement of sustainable forest management. The focus is also on independence and economic efficiency The PEFC TM certification system is recognized worldwide. In addition, the system only deploys independent certifiers, whose reliability is checked regularly. CE mark By applying the CE mark, a manufacturer confirms that the product on sale complies with the applicable, product-specific European directives. The CE mark is not a quality seal, but merely indicates compliance with the minimum statutory requirements. If a four-digit number is applied after the CE symbol, it refers to the involvement of a Notified Body in the conformity assessment procedure. The CE mark was developed to provide the end consumer with an indication of safe products (on the basis of compliance with the " fundamental (safety) requirements") within the European Economic Area. If one or several EU directives are fulfilled with a product, the product must bear the CE mark. Other markings or quality seals are not permissible next to the CE mark. The CE mark is a prerequisite for placing any products on the market for the first time for which a CE mark is required in accordance with EU directives, i.e. in all member states of the European Economic Area. When used in external areas, it is necessary to ensure effective protection through architectural or structural measures and through specialist treatment with suitable wood protection agents. The advantages: Strong and has good elasticity characteristics Moderate shrinkage Predominantly good resilience Low susceptibility to warping and cracking Easy to work Excellent coatability (works well with commercially available varnishes, waxes, wood stains or paints) Highly versatile, e.g. as solid timber and veneer in furniture building, the manufacture of numerous domestic and kitchen appliances, decorative wall and ceiling panels, and in window and door construction Pine is perfectly suited to use in external areas thanks to its excellent capacity for pressure treatment in the autoclave process.
