UniCam Connector Critical Steps The UniCam connector has a fiber stub that is prepolished in the factory (Figure 1). To terminate, the field fiber must be stripped and cleaved, and must butt up against the fiber stub. The most common installation errors are poor cleave, short cleave, and the field fiber not touching the fiber stub. This booklet is designed to guide you through the critical steps to ensure successful termination. Refer to SRP for complete instructions and precautions. 2 1 The wrench handle on the installation tool must be in the up position (Figure 2). Crimp handle Slider Wrench handle is up L R Crimp platform Figure 2 - Installation Tool 2 Connector cams may move slightly in shipment, so verify that the connector cam on each connector is in the open position (Figure 3): MT-RJ, FC, and ST compatible connectors are in the open position when the cam key is positioned 90 from the the up label molded on the dust cap. SC connectors are in the open position when the cam key is positioned 90 from the date code. LC connectors are in the open position when the CORNING on the cam is positioned 90 from the latch which secures the front dust cap. 3 U P U P L R Place the connector into the tool correctly. The date code on SC, the up on the dust cap of ST compatible, FC, and MT-RJ, or the latch of LC connectors must be up. The lead-in tube must rest fully on the crimp platform as shown in Figure 4. The dust cap must remain on the connector when placing it into the tool. Note: Be sure the connector is fully seated in the tool. Up Wrench handle (remains up) Date Up code Lead-in tube Latch Crimp platform L R L R L R FC and ST compatible MT-RJ SC LC Figure 4 - Connectors in Tool 4 Strip the fiber to bare glass. Make certain that all coatings are removed and the fiber is clean. Any coatings left on the fiber will not fit into the splice section of the connector and will affect attenuation. Wipe the fiber clean with 90%+ isopropyl alcohol. Note: Do not wipe the fiber more than two times. 3
5 On 900 µm fibers, place a mark on the coating behind the interface between the bare fiber and the fiber coating (Figure 5). This mark will provide you visual feedback that the field fiber has touched the fiber stub. Mark Bare fiber Figure 5 - Mark for Visual Feedback 8 mm for LC 10 mm for FC, SC, and ST compatible 13 mm for MT-RJ 6 Fan-Out Tubing Accurate strip lengths are critical for successful terminations on fan-out tubing. Because the 250 µm fiber is floating freely in the 900 µm fan-out tubing, it will piston back in the tubing when it encounters resistance. Therefore, 4 mm of 250 µm coating must extend beyond the 900 µm tubing to allow for pistoning (Figure 6). Make visual feedback mark from end of 250 µm coating. 900 µm fan-out tubing Mark 4 mm 250 µm coated fiber Bare fiber Figure 6 - Cleave Measurement 4
Cleaving is critical. Do not cut the fiber with the cleaver. The cleaver blade should only score the fiber (or fibers, for MT-RJ connectors) and the bending motion of the fiber guide should cleave the fiber. Blade 900 µm Stop Stop 11 Bare fiber end Bare fiber End of coating Fiber guide Current FBC-001 Old style FBC-001 Figure 7 - FBC-001 Cleaver Guides Position the fiber so that the end of the fiber coating lines up with the fiber guide s positive stop (or at the 8.5 mm mark on older FBC-001 cleavers) and the end of the fiber is secured under the spring-loaded fiber clamp (Figure 7). For fan-out tubing applications, the cleave length must begin at the stop or be measured 8.5 mm from the 250 µm coating, NOT the 900 µm tubing (Figure 8). Figure 8 - Cleave Lengths for Fan-Out Tubing 900 µm Fan-out Tubing Stop 1411 Bare fiber µm fiber coating µm Fiber coating Do not let 250 mm coating go past the stop.
8 Insert the fiber(s) into the lead in-tube as described in SRP Marks on fibers should be within 2 mm of the lead-in tube (Figure 9a). Carefully push the buffered fibers into the fiber clamp on the tool. Maintain inward pressure on the fibers so that a slight bow forms in the buffered fibers between the connector and the clamp (Figure 9b). This bow is important it will ensure the fibers maintain contact with the stub fiber during Step 9. 2 mm (0.08 in.) R L R L Fiber clamp Figure 9a - Insert the fiber(s) into the lead-in tube Figure 9b - Fiber Clamp 6
Rotate the wrench handle past 90 to cam the connector. The wrench handle must stay down. 10 Rotate the crimp handle 180 until it contacts the lead-in tube (Figure 10). Push the handle down firmly and lift it back up. Before removing the connector, be sure that the lead-in tube appears crimped. Crimp handle Figure 10 - Rotate the Wrench Handle 7
With the wrench handle remaining down, pull back on the slider and lift straight up on the connector and its fiber to remove it (Figure 11). L R Figure 11 - Lift straight up on connector and its fiber to remove 8
MT-RJ UniCam Connector Critical Installation Tips Fiber Preparation 1. Place boot on both fibers, then insert UniCam MT-RJ connector into installation tool Too often, installers forget to insert the connector first and end up laying clean, cleaved fibers down on the work surface to insert the connector Do not strip fibers until boot is on and connector is in the installation tool 2. Wipe 900 µm fibers with alcohol prior to stripping to remove any contaminants. 3. Follow instructions per SRP concerning required marks; for example, 13 mm Guide mark. 4. Remove the 900µm buffering, measure and mark 13 mm from the end of the buffer. Next remove the 250 µm coating, clean the fibers with an alcohol wipe, and cleave the fibers. Cleaver If using FBC-001: Do not staple fibers to score; lightly apply pressure to fibers with ceramic blade Do not bend leafspring while scoring fibers Do not cross fibers during cleaving (continued on next page) 9
(continued from previous page) If using a cleaver other than FBC-001: Make sure correct cleave angles can be achieved Ensure cleaves on both fibers are made at exactly the same lengths Prior to inserting the fibers into the back of the connector, inspect to see that both cleaves are identical in length. Fiber Insertion 5. Hold both 900 µm fibers together with the fiber ends at even lengths. 6. Fibers should be inserted in the center of the lead-in tubes to avoid breaks. 7. If both fibers are difficult to insert, leave fibers in the lead-in tube and insert one at a time. 8. Apply sufficient back pressure on the inserted fibers during the camming action. 9. Watch the Continuity Test Set (CTS) light to make sure it dims after camming. Note: The CTS light may not dim before camming. Attempting to obtain a dim light before camming will result in damaged cleaves and a failed connector. 10. Look at visual marks to make sure they were within 1 to 2 mm of the lead-in tube when fully inserted. 10
11. If the light isn t completely out on the CTS, then un-cam the MT-RJ, reseat the fibers, and re-cam. 12. Apply sufficient back pressure during crimping Weave fibers into fiber clamp, forming a bow in the fibers. Equipment 13. Clean the connector on the CTS jumper every 5 terminations. 14. If possible, during the CTS setup, replace VFL with an OTDR or Power Meter / Light Source to receive instant, statistical feedback on connector loss. 15. Corning Cable Systems recommends using the Connector Cleaning Cassette to clean MT-RJ ferrule endfaces. 16. Maintain all connector and adapter dust caps. 17.
