PART B Back-up Material Floor plan of the space The layout of the space utilised the large format banner on the left hand side that features Balls Pyramid. The exisitng steel walls were painted a deep blue, the colour of the sky that the adult (all nocturnal) Lord Howe Island Stick Insects see. Added to this was both three-dimensional and painted Melaleuca howeana textures to give depth. This was the plant that the surviving population was discovered hanging onto.
The Hero sculpture Eve Throughout the research and consultation phase of this project, one character stood was a clear standout to tell the story of the survival of the Lord Howe Island Stick Insect and that was Eve herself, one of the original pair that first came to Melbourne Zoo. We also wanted visitors to be able to get up close and personal and explore the insect. This was problematic with real insects, so we decided on the next best thing, a giant sculpture. We worked with Martin Moore of Person, place, thing, who did a 3D scan of a recently deceased LHISI. His intention was to create a digital file that could then be manipulated and posed to ensure we could achieve the tricky balance between biologically correct yet fun and engaging. She had some modifications to make her slightly more visitor friendly, her antennae became closer to the ground, doubling as a slide/access point. And her ovipositor was positioned in contact with the ground, the position that females adopt when laying their eggs. This is a behaviour unique to the LHISI as most other stick insects flick their eggs and they land where they land. The LHISI s carefully place them in the sand or substrate. The sculpture was created through a process of sand casting and Foundry-cast aluminium, with final assembly undertaken with welding. The result is a stunning and interactive play element that withstands the pressures of investigative and excitable children!
Large format banner The intention of this banner is to give an overview of the LHISI story. We felt it was important to show how hostile Balls Pyramid is and where it is in relation to Lord Howe Island to give the context of this extraordinary story of survival. The pictograms also help us deal with the challenging topic of rat eradication (the pied piper) in an elegant and fun analogy. Close-up of the infographic approach to telling the LHISI story
Graphic panels, MagicInfo Screens and background textures We really want our visitors to share our love of the LHISI, so we developed this love heart that we used to brand all the awesome adaptations and characteristics of the LHISI. Zookeeper Rohan Cleave, had managed to capture a juvenile stick insect hatching from its egg. IT was remarkable footage that had gone viral online. Many of our visitors had seen this as it had also been pushed through the Zoos social media channels. We utilised this footage by showing it on within this display. It s viewable here:
Animation screen wall The animation scrolls across the three screens. It was adapted form Sticky, the short film by Jilli Rose that won international recognition at several film festivals. The footrpint texture is the footprint of Eve, our feature Lord Howe Island Stick Insect who is the hero of the story and the space. You can view the complete version of Sticky here
Donation point and book download Our donation point also doubles as the book downloading point. We tried a new appraoch inthis space, where we would normally ask for a donation to fund the conservation program, this time we asked for a donation to download a beautifully illustrated e-book. So far we have received a greater number of donations than before the refurbishment works. We ve also had a higher number of book downloads than we had originally anticipated. Heres a taster of Eves adventures, find out what happens in the end

Other collateral We utilised the heart design throughout the promotion of this space, it went on t-shirts, temporary tattoos, into our retail space, and even on to headbands that some of our staff made themselves! We really wanted to get into the hearts of visitors, highlighting the love that our staff have for the LHISI and creating an infectious buzz defintiely helped us prime our audience for the experience.
