2 PLUS WEDNESDAY 20 AUGUST 2014 COVER STORY 10 Prerequisites for a happy dorm life By Jessica Contrera 1. Plan with your roommate. Don't be the pair that ends up with two mini fridges and two TVs. Talk about what you need to bring, whether you want to coordinate your decor and what the expectations are for how your room will be used. If you both want your room to be a place where others hang out, you'll want pillows for sitting on the floor. If your roommate goes to bed early, you ll want a desk lamp that you can use to keep working when the lights are off. The best roommate relationships are grounded in communication, said Stephanie Lynch, assistant dean for residential living at Georgetown University. Start the conversation before you arrive on campus. 2. Don't buy it all before you arrive. As tempting as it is to buy every bright-coloured dorm room must-have advertised, contain yourself. Find the basics, then see what you need when you get to your room. If you don't wait, you risk buying items that don t work in your space. 3. Buy furniture that can be used in multiple ways. As you know (or will very soon discover), dorm rooms are notoriously small. Don t clutter yours with furniture. Anything bulky you bring into the space should always be multifunctional, said Stephanie Hayman, chief product officer at Dormify, a dorm decorating blog and retailer. One of the easiest multiuse pieces is an ottoman, which can serve as storage, seating, a coffee table or a mini-desk if you sit on the floor. 4. Clean first. Dorm rooms are a cesspool of germs. One of the best ways to avoid getting sick from living in close quarters is to keep yourself and your space clean. When you first arrive, make sure you clean the floor, under the mattress and in the sink if you have one, said Robin Wilson, an interior designer who focuses on eco-friendly cleanliness. Before you bring in your things, make sure all the dust that might have been sitting there for five years is completely gone. Quick cleaning tips for surviving the rest of the year: Carry hand sanitizer, wash your sheets twice a month and keep disinfecting wipes in your room. 5. Then rearrange your furniture. After cleaning your new room, consider its layout. It's easier to move the furniture around before you have all of your clothes, books, pillows and such in there, said Liz Gray, a senior editor at HGTV.com. A few space-making options Gray suggests are lofting your bed, moving your dresser into the closet and putting your desk back-to-back with your roommate's. The best roommate relationships are grounded in communication. Start the conversation before you arrive on campus. The most common conflicts in residence halls occur when roommates don t communicate.

PLUS WEDNESDAY 20 AUGUST Transform vertical space into storage space. Another tip for saving space from Dormify: Your front door, closet doors and bathroom door can all become storage spaces with over-the-door hooks and shoe racks, Hayman said. You can also use adhesive hooks along your walls to hang coats, scarves, purses and other small accessories. Less clutter equals more room to hang out with new friends. 7. Buy small necessities in bulk. Most campuses don't allow freshmen to have a car on campus, which makes it difficult to shop anywhere other than dining halls and expensive university bookstores. Before Mom and Dad head back home, consider stopping at a bulk discount retailer to stock up on items you know you ll be using all semester, including snacks, pens and toiletries. 8. Decide what you want to share. Lynch says the most common conflicts Georgetown sees in its residence halls occur when roommates don't communicate. Think about whether you are okay with your roommate eating your snacks, using your cosmetic products or borrowing your clothes. Do you want him or her to ask first? Whatever your preference, make it clear. 9. Beware the bathroom. You already know to wear shower shoes into those dreaded communal bathrooms, but have you thought about protecting your toothbrush? It's easy for someone next to you to splash dirty water on your toothbrush while they wash their face, Wilson said. Try clip-on toothbrush sanitizers, which usually come in a two-pack, for easy germ avoidance. Remember to wash out your shower caddy often, too. Again: Sickness is coming for you when you live with dozens of other people. By taking steps to avoid it, you lessen your chances of having to miss class (or that spring break trip). 10. Keep your desk clear. Gray recommends not setting anything on your desk that you don't use every day, like your phone charger, laptop and writing tools. That way, you'll always be ready to study. You are at college to learn, after all. WP-Bloomberg

FOOD PLUS WEDNESDAY 20 AUGUST Judy Joo brings Korean flavours to home cooks By Richard Leong R iding the wave of global popularity of Korean cuisine, chef Judy Joo travels around her parents homeland and adopts kimchi, pickled cabbage, and other local dishes for home cooks on her Cooking Channel TV show Korean Food Made Simple. Joo, a former Wall Street bond salesperson, will open her first restaurant, Jinjuu, in London later this year. The two-floor, 100-seat eatery, whose name means pearl in Korean, will showcase Korean and American street food. It will be a departure from the upscale tasting menus of the Playboy Club London, where she spent nearly three years as executive chef. The 39-year-old New Jersey native spoke about her love of food, her career change and why Koreans have separate refrigerators for kimchi. What can viewers learn from your show? It s about me travelling throughout Korea, to the south to the beaches, to the city to eat some street food... gathering inspirations and taking them back to my home kitchen and cooking recipes that are simple and easy for the home cook. When did you know you no longer wanted to sell bonds? I just realized I didn t have a passion for it. All of my free time in the weekends I was really excited to pick up food magazines and figure out what new restaurants opened up, what hot chefs were doing, and keeping up with the pulse of the restaurant world as opposed to the pulse of Wall Street. Did you have regrets about your career change? I was making a fraction of what I made in the financial world. The hours are awful. You are working Saturday night... I try not to glamorize it because it is a lot of hard work. But if you work hard, the money will come. For people already familiar with kimchi, what is another Korean ingredient you recommend to the American home cook? Gochujang (a Korean chili paste) is a product of wonder. There is no reason why it can t be the next Sriracha or ketchup. I m using it in all areas of my cooking. It s not just heat. It s spiced with deep complex flavours that come from the fermentation process. Do you make your own kimchi? A: I don t make my own on a regular basis because it really smells. I don t want to make my refrigerator reek. That s why Koreans have kimchi refrigerators. Reuters Cucumber Kimchi Four servings Ingredients 1 pound (454 grams) small Korean, Persian or Kirby cucumbers 1 tablespoon kosher salt or sea salt 4 scallions or spring onions, chopped into 2- to 3-inch pieces (5- to 7 1/2-centimeters) 1 medium onion, roughly chopped 1 small clove garlic 1-inch (21/2-centimeter) piece ginger 2 tablespoons water 1 tablespoon Korean chili flakes (gochugaru), or to taste 1 tablespoon sugar 1 tablespoon salted shrimp (saewoo jut) 15 chives, cut into 2-inch (5-centimeter) pieces Method: Using a small knife, cut each cucumber crosswise into 2-inch (5-centimeter) pieces. Stand the pieces on their cut sides. Cut each piece two-thirds of the way down into quarters lengthwise, keeping them attached at the bottom. Sprinkle the cucumbers with salt, making sure to stuff inside the cuts of the cucumbers. Place in a single layer on their cut sides in a glass or other non-reactive dish, cover, and let sit at room temperature for 1 hour to soften. Meanwhile, prepare the chili paste mix. In a food processor combine all of the remaining ingredients except for the chives. Pulse until a coarse paste forms. Stir in the chives. Rinse the salted cucumbers very well under cold water, making sure to evacuate the crevices, and shake dry. Spread open the cucumbers and using plastic gloves, stuff the chili mix into and around each piece generously. Place into a container, packed somewhat tightly, and press in any remaining chili paste and liquid. Seal tightly. Allow the cucumbers to ferment at room temperature for 24 hours. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

6 PLUS WEDNESDAY 20 AUGUST 2014 ARCHAEOLOGY Unearthing Julafar settlement in UAE Ming Dynasty ruled China between AD and their ruling appeared to have been characterised by social reforms and stability. Historical records also reveal that Ming Dynasty exported culture and traded mainly in Asia and many other countries all over the world. Chief among its trade was the so-called Ming Dynasty Porcelain, which highly flourished between the end of the sixteenth and the beginning of the seventeenth centuries. This phenomenon seems to be clearly visible during the field survey and in the beginning of excavation at Julafar ruins, when different kinds of Ming Dynasty Porcelain sherds began to appear in fairly good quantities. Moreover, through the course of excavations, unusually large number of pieces of Ming Porcelain Ware began to appear in different depths and levels. This was clear and absolute indications that Julafar was an important redistribution centre in the Arabian Gulf for Ming Dynasty Porcelain. As excavations continued in different parts and directions to a depth of over two meters, more complete and incomplete antiquities were discovered along with contemporary porcelain. Among them, for example, were bronze coins, small glass bottles (perfume containers), knives and other tools made of iron, different kinds of beads made of semi-precious stones, and coloured glass bracelets. In addition to them spindle whorls, terra-cotta figurines, complete storage pottery jars usually with four lugs, pottery pots in form of modern coffee pots were also found. The most important of all the finds, however, were the fourteen pearl beads, which were found together threaded in deteriorated fibre string. As for architectural features a number of rooms built with unshaped soft stones and remnants of mud used as mortar were found after removing the debris, which contained carbonized material and layers of black ashes. At the end of the season, we reached the conclusion that the excavated area consisted of four consecutive habitation levels. They ranged from the fourteenth to beginning of the twentieth century. The people lived here were in general traders and fishermen and were part of the pearling industry in the Arabian Gulf. This unique coastal vast town served through thirteen centuries as re-distributing port for the entire Arabian Gulf up to the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean and it was part of the Silk Rood Trade System. At the end of the season, demonstration of the antiquities found during the excavations were made by the writer to Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and other top officials of the Emirates who were with him at Al Thad Fort located in the desert. The presence of layers of black ash, carbonised material, pieces of crushed stones and gypsum bricks, and cannon balls were good indications that Dr Munir Taha Julafar, the famous coastal town, was often attacked by pirates and foreign ships sailing in the Arabian Gulf waters seeking shelter and consequently control. Continous field survey along the fivekilometres long and over two hundred meters wide settlement indicated that most of its southern parts lie (then) under the seawater. While it s northern parts are deteriorating by high waves and high tides. Consequently, parts of the settlement were devoured by the sea waters and many antiquities completely crushed and scattered on the seashore. In addition to this, the continuous disturbances of the entire settlement area by modern buildings, paved streets, cemetery and many other facilities left the entire area shrank some few hundred square meters by now. 7 WHEELS PLUS WEDNESDAY 20 AUGUST By Shinsuke Ishiguro More leading Japanese automakers are developing new models of their flagship sports cars in collaboration with foreign manufacturers of high-end vehicles. The Japanese companies aim to minimise development costs by sharing the burden with the foreign makers, while also benefiting from the overseas manufacturers brand recognition. But some auto experts have warned this could weaken the originality of the Japanese automakers' own brands and alienate established fans who have favored those brands for many years. In June, Nissan released the Skyline 200 GT-t, a new model in its Skyline sports car line with turbo engines made by Daimler of Germany. The engine was originally made for Mercedez Benz automobiles. Skyline fans have given the new model and its engine a warm reception, and orders have reached about 1,800 units in the two months since its release. This is more than four times Nissan's initial goal. In 2013, Toyota announced joint development with BMW of Germany. At a press conference at the time of the announcement, then Vice Chairman Takeshi Uchiyamada said, We want to make the successor to the Supra. Toyota discontinued sales of its Supra model sports car in Toyota will likely release the new model in 2017 at the earliest. The chassis of a new model Roadster convertible, made by Mazda, is currently under joint development with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, a group operating mainly in the United States and Europe. Fiat Chrysler owns Alfa Romeo as a group company. Mazda is scheduled to announce the Japanese, foreign automakers join forces on new sports cars design of the new model in September. An official at a major Japanese automaker said the domestic market for sports cars is a small market with annual sales of tens of thousands of units at the most. But retail prices per vehicle are high, so foreign automakers have made large profits from sports car sales. Brand recognition has been relatively weak for sports cars produced by Japanese automakers, so the firms had reduced their lineups of such models in favour of developing next-generation hybrids and electric vehicles. But consumers in Japan have bought a smaller number of cars in recent years, and rivals in emerging nations have competed aggressively with Japanese companies in overseas markets. This lead to a growing perception among Japanese automakers that flagship sports car models are essential to revitalise brand recognition, and they have resumed development in this area. However, development costs for sports cars have rapidly ballooned because of stronger regulations on environment-friendly performance and safety technologies. Joint development can minimize development costs and offer other benefits. Nissan Executive Vice President Hiroto Saikawa said, Installing Daimler's technologies can be appealing for luxury car owners. But some in the industry voiced caution. Our company's originality may be lost, a senior Nissan official said. Such joint projects will continue to appear in the future, said automobile analyst Takaki Nakanishi. However, because sports cars strongly reflect each company's originality, it won't be easy to keep pace with partners in development. WP-Bloomberg

Men s Fitness magazine and men s cancer charity Orchid have teamed up with male grooming brand The Bluebeards Revenge to launch a campaign to find Britain s Manliest Man. The Expendables 3: Oldies get a chance to flex some muscle By Stephanie Merry rom the beginning, the Expendables franchise has Fexisted as a way to give formerly popular action stars a chance to once again flex some muscle. The brainchild of Sylvester Stallone, the first movie, in 2010, assembled Dolph Lundgren, Jason Statham and Jet Li, with cameos by Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger. A jaded moviegoer might look at that lineup and see a cast of has-beens desperately trying to stay relevant. But it worked to the tune of $274m. Naturally, sequels would follow, and the latest, The Expendables 3, is yet another chance to see so many vaguely familiar faces and say, Oh yeah. I remember him. With the exception of Willis, all of those original players have returned. But we also get Wesley Snipes, Harrison Ford, Antonio Banderas and Kelsey Grammer. Oh, and Mel Gibson, who hasn t had the opportunity to do much in Hollywood since he made misogynistic and antisemitic comments after getting pulled over for driving under the influence in Given his past indiscretions, Gibson is especially believable as the movie s villain, Stonebanks, even as his dialogue is ridiculously over-the-top. His character was once part of the elite mercenary team known as the Expendables alongside Barney Ross (Stallone), but Stonebanks let greed get the best of him and has since become a weapons dealer with a mansion in Moscow and a cache of pricey artwork. He s also a war criminal, and CIA operative Drummer (Ford) wants the Expendables to capture Stonebanks and bring him to the Hague. Given that this mission is what Barney calls a one-way ticket, he lets go of his old cronies and assembles a team of young and fearless warriors played by, among others, Kellan Lutz from Twilight and real-life mixed martial artist Ronda Rousey. Lutz is hardly a standout thespian, but compared with Rousey he looks like he may one day win a Laurence Olivier Award. Of course, the Expendables franchise isn t about spotlighting the power of youthful and virile action stars; it s about letting older guys prove they ve still got it. So the amateurs get kidnapped and it s up to Stallone and the other oldies but goodies to rescue them. The movie s action sequences are both thrilling and idiotic. One moment you might be holding your breath and the next you re laughing out loud because of how fake it looks when Agent Drummer does figure eights around a smokestack in a helicopter. The characters are, for the most part, invincible. Watching Barney throw Old actors should not retire: Stallone ctor Sylvester Stallone requested ageing stars to drop retirement plans Abecause they owe it to their fans to just keep going. The 68-year-old action star has revived his career with The Expendables franchise and says he has no time for those who opt to quit acting. Age is a state of old mind. It gets to the point when you get old enough you forget how old you are and that s the best thing. You walk around kind of like in a fog. So you really don t know how old you are and it s beautiful, contactmusic.com quoted him as saying. And then you find yourself watching Teletubbies drunk one night! I m not ready to sit at home and play with Pomeranians (dogs) 12 hours a day. So you keep going. Remember, in old vaudeville there was a cane that snatched you off the stage? Well, I m waiting for that until they just hook me off and that s it. Actors don t want to retire. They re usually forced to retire and that s sad because you get better as you get older. You may not remember as much dialogue, but you do remember you re better at it, he added. IANS punches, kickbox, spray enemies with bullets and man an airplane, you might start to wonder whether there s anything this guy can t do. Well, there is one thing: Move his face. Stallone s remarkably smooth mug is frozen in a perma-pout that impedes every line delivery. The movie s best moments come courtesy of Banderas, who plays an acrobatic and exhaustingly gregarious out-of-work mercenary desperate for another chance to do what he loves most, which is killing people. Banderas, who got big laughs at a recent screening for the subtlest of deadpan expressions, also reminds us of all an actor can accomplish when he has control of his facial muscles. The latest in the Expendables franchise is also the longest, clocking in at a little over two hours. That s well beyond anyone s daily dietary requirement for machine gun fire and middling dialogue. Stallone should save some of his material for the practically inevitable fourth movie. After all, Steven Seagal and Kurt Russell need something to do. WP-Bloomberg Abhishek Bachchan in film on kabaddi? A ctor Abhishek Bachchan, who owns Jaipur Pink Panthers, a franchise of the Pro Kabaddi League, may do a full-fledged movie on the sport. Abhishek wants to make sure it s the perfect kabaddi film. He s on the lookout for the script, said a source. For now, making kabaddi into a cool game is Abhishek s game-plan. Though he is committed to join his good friend Shah Rukh Khan on their global tour to promote their film Happy New Year September onwards, Abhishek is making the best of the time before the concert tours to promote his kabaddi team at matches all over India. Abhishek makes sure he is physically present to cheer and motivate his kabaddi team, the Jaipur Pink Panthers. There is little point in associating with a team, no matter which game, unless you re physically present to motivate them, said Abhishek. 10 HEALTH / FITNESS PLUS WEDNESDAY 20 AUGUST New drugs can dissolve kidney stones: Report f you have gone through that excruciating pain Ifrom a kidney stone and are prone to develop more, here comes good news. According to a new study, a class of drugs approved to treat leukemia and epilepsy also may be effective against kidney stones. The drugs are histone deacetylase inhibitors or HDAC inhibitors. Researchers found that two of them - Vorinostat and trichostatin A - lower levels of calcium and magnesium in the urine. Both calcium and magnesium are key components of kidney stones. We are hopeful this class of drugs can dissolve kidney stones because its effects on reducing calcium and magnesium are exclusive to kidney cells, said Jianghui Hou, an assistant professor of medicine at Washington University s school of medicine in St Louis. In the mice, they achieved dramatic effects at a fraction of the dosage used to treat leukemia and without significant side effects. Some people are genetically prone to developing kidney stones and they naturally release too much calcium into the urine. Typically, doctors recommend drinking lots of water to help pass kidney stones from the body. In the new study on mice, Hou and his colleagues showed that small doses of Vorinostat reduced calcium levels in the urine by more than 50 percent and magnesium levels by more than 40 percent. Similar results were noted for trichostatin A. We now want to test the drug in clinical trials for patients with kidney stones, Hou concluded. The research appeared online in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology. Sleep apnea may lead to resistant high BP T here is a strong link between severe, untreated obstructive sleep apnea and the risk of elevated blood pressure despite the use of high blood pressure medications, an alarming study indicates. The study involved patients who had cardiovascular risk factors or established heart disease and moderate or severe obstructive sleep apnea. Among participants prescribed at least three antihypertensives including a diuretic, resistant elevated blood pressure was more prevalent in those with severe sleep apnea (58.3 percent) compared with moderate sleep apnea (28.6 percent). Further analysis found that the odds of resistant elevated blood pressure were four times higher in participants with severe, untreated obstructive sleep apnea. Our findings suggest that severe obstructive sleep apnea contributes to poor blood pressure control despite aggressive medication use, said first author Harneet Walia, an assistant professor from Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University. High blood pressure that is resistant to treatment with medications is a strong warning sign for the presence of obstructive sleep apnea - a chronic disease that increases the risk for heart disease and stroke, added Timothy Morgenthaler, president of American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Over one-third of patients with hypertension and nearly eight out of 10 patients with treatment resistant hypertension have obstructive sleep apnea. People who have high blood pressure should talk to a doctor about their risk for sleep apnea, researchers added. The results were published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine. Agencies Does vitamin D help with asthma? More study needed By Janice Neumann Asthma sufferers who received vitamin D supplements for six months, in addition to their regular inhalers, could breathe a little easier than those who relied only on the inhalers, in a recent study in Iran. The researchers say the results - if confirmed by larger studies - might help the many people who sometimes have troublesome asthma symptoms even though they use medication. It does build some on the growing amount of data that shows vitamin D might help those affected by asthma, Dr Mario Castro, who was not involved in the study, said. But Castro, a professor of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis, Missouri, pointed out that the researchers only measured patients lung function, and not whether or not their symptoms improved. Given that vitamin D is a relatively benign supplement, the small improvement in lung function would be worthwhile if it was confirmed with other improvements in asthma control, he said, such as fewer symptoms or a reduced need for medication. About one in 12 individuals, or 25 million people, have asthma in the US alone. In the last decade, the number of people with asthma has grown by about 15 percent. Higher rates of asthma in northern climates have led some researchers to suspect that less sunlight and therefore less vitamin D could be playing a role. Several studies have shown a link between low vitamin D levels and asthma. The new study, by Dr Saba Arshi at the Medical University of Tehran and colleagues, involved 130 children and adults with mild-to-moderate asthma. Everyone received asthma medication in a dry powder inhaler (budesonide, sold in the US as Pulmicort, or budesonide plus formoterol, sold in the US as Symbicort). In addition, half the group was randomly chosen to receive high doses of vitamin D for six months. The first dose, 100,000 units, was given by injection; then patients were instructed to take 50,000 units orally once a week. After eight weeks, when the researchers measured the amount of air patients could exhale in one second, both groups had improved to roughly the same extent. But after 28 weeks, that amount had improved by about 20 percent in the patients who received vitamin D supplements, versus about 7 percent among those who only used the inhaler. The authors did not respond to questions about the study, which was published in Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. Castro thinks the patients in the study weren t particularly deficient in vitamin D. This is another weakness as they enrolled patients with normal vitamin D levels, so (they re) unlikely to see a treatment effect, Castro said. He would not recommend that patients with asthma take vitamin D supplements based on this study and one of his own studies, though his research found some people with deficient levels improved after supplementation. Dr Doug Brugge, a professor of public health and community medicine at Tufts School of Medicine in Boston, said he thought the study added to the field of asthma and vitamin D research. I think it adds some evidence that vitamin D may be beneficial in terms of treating asthma, which in turn contributes some evidence that vitamin D is a factor in asthma, Brugge, who wasn t involved in the study, said. He noted that most asthma research has focused on children, but this one included adults. There really is a need for more research on asthma in adults, he said. But Brugge, who has studied the possible environmental causes of childhood asthma, said the study would have been more convincing if researchers had checked whether patients took their medication as prescribed (other than asking by phone) and included any exposure to environmental triggers of asthma. It leaves a little doubt in my mind... what if the intervention group was adhering to the medication more than the control group? I think it s unlikely but it would have been nice to see that a little more clearly addressed, said Brugge. Adherence is a big problem, said Brugge, referring to medication use in general. Non-adherence is more common than adherence. Brugge too thinks more studies are needed before anyone can assume that vitamin D would help people with asthma. I think it s a reasonable hypothesis and their study and some other studies provide evidence it might be true. But I don t think it s proven yet, said Brugge. 11 12 PLUS WEDNESDAY 20 AUGUST 2014 TECHNOLOGY Flappy Bird creator returns with Swing Copters game Due for release this week, new game opts for vertical scrolling over horizontal, but keeps the punishing difficulty level. By Stuart Dredge Swing Copters is coming, but will it be as big a hit as Flappy Bird? Swing Copters is coming, but will it be as big a hit as Flappy Bird? Flappy Bird was a bona-fide mobile game craze in early 2014, but its popularity led to developer Dong Nguyen removing it from Google and Apple s app stores. Now he s returning with a sequel, of sorts. Nguyen s new game is called Swing Copters, and will be released this week. Mobile game reviews site TouchArcade bagged exclusive news and gameplay footage of the game. According to the report, Swing Copters will be released on August 21 as a free download, with players able to pay $0.99 via in-app purchase to remove advertising from the game. Nguyen has since confirmed on Twitter that the new game will be released for ios and Android devices. How does Swing Copters move on from Flappy Bird s famously-difficult one-tap gameplay? Well, it moves upwards. While Flappy Bird was a horizontally-scrolling game that involved tapping to make its hero flap, Swing Copters scrolls vertically, with players tapping to make a propellor-hatwearing character move from side to side, avoiding platforms and swinging hammers. As you can see from the video footage, Swing Copters hasn t ditched the punishly-tricky gameplay of Flappy Bird. If anything, it looks more difficult, thanks to those swinging hammers. The original Flappy Bird game was released in May 2013 for ios, but downloads took off in early 2014, notching up more than 50m players before Nguyen removed it from the app stores in February. Nguyen found the pressure of success too much to bear. I am sorry Flappy Bird users, 22 hours from now, I will take Flappy Bird down. I cannot take this anymore, he tweeted that month. It is not anything related to legal issues. I just cannot keep it anymore. I also don t sell Flappy Bird, please don t ask. And I still make games. In March, Nguyen gave an interview to Rolling Stone explaining that a combination of paparazzi besieging his parents house and s from parents complaining about the addictive qualities of Flappy Bird had led to his decision to take the game down. After Flappy Bird was taken down, a wave of clones appeared, including tributes to celebrities including Miley Cyrus and London mayor Boris Johnson. In a single 24-hour period in February, 95 Flappy Bird-inspired games were released for ios alone. In April, meanwhile, a game falsely claiming to be an official sequel, Flappy Bird: New Season, flew to the top of Apple s App Store chart. What I did was like magic. It was unexpected. If a lot of people tried to do that again, I think they would fail, Nguyen said on-stage at the Gamelab 2014 conference in July. His own return to the app stores this week seems rather more likely to be a success. The Guardian Microsoft cloud service Azure restored after partial outage icrosoft said it resolved an outage on its Azure Mcloud computing service, which occurred across multiple regions. Partial disruptions began as of 1.40 pm ET on August 18, the company said on the Azure website. Microsoft Azure is a cloud-based platform for creating, deploying and maintaining online applications and services such as websites and web-hosted applications. The service, which is used by governments and corporations around the world, supports various programming languages, tools and frameworks. The company said Azure services such as virtual machines, cloud services, mobile services, service bus, site recovery, HDInsight, websites and Storsimple were down due to interruptions in multiple centres. The core platform components were working properly throughout and only a small subset of customers were affected by the outage, Microsoft said. Google considering YouTube, Gmail accounts for kids, say reports oogle Inc is considering allowing online accounts Gfor children under the age of 13 and give their parents control over how the service is used, according to media reports. Google has been working on a version of YouTube, its video-sharing site, for youngsters and is considering other child-friendly accounts such as its Gmail system, the Financial Times reported, citing a person familiar with the matter. Internet companies such as Google and Facebook Inc do not offer their services to children under 13, but it is tough to catch users who sign up by providing false information. A US law called Children s Online Privacy Protection Act, or COPPA, imposes strict controls on the collection and use of information about children under 13. Google s effort is partly driven by the fact that some parents are already trying to create accounts for their children and the company wants to make the process easier and compliant with the rules, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing a person familiar with the effort. Google s move was first reported by technology news website The Information. Google spokesman Peter Barron declined to comment on what he called rumours and speculation. The Oscar-winning actor said he was inspired by the colourful, charming experience of typing on a real typewriter, complete with satisfying clicks and that unmistakable ding as the machine moves to the next line. In the late 70 s, I bought a typewriter portable enough for world travel and sturdy enough to survive decades of ten-fingered beatings, writes Hanks on the app s intro page. I ve since acquired many more each different in design, action, and sound. Each one stamps into paper a permanent trail of imagination through keys, hammers, cloth and dye a softer version of chiselling words into stone. I write without caring about typeovers, XXXX d out words, goofy syntax, & bad spelling because the feel & sound of a typewriter is satisfying in ways that couldn t be matched. - Until now! 15 16 Family snares mega alligator in Alabama A family battled a 1,000-pound alligator for more than five hours, putting several large hooks into the beast before firing a fatal shotgun blast into the gator s head. The result? The catch of a lifetime and a state record in Alabama. The 15-foot gator was hooked in a creek about 80 miles west of Montgomery early Saturday, Al.com reported. The first attempt to weigh the gator destroyed a winch state biologists typically use, so they had a backhoe lift it. It weighed 1,011.5 pounds. It was caught by Mandy and John Stokes, brother-in-law Kevin Jenkins and his children, 16-year-old Savannah and 14-year-old Parker. We give all the glory to God. Ten men couldn t have done what we did, John Stokes said. The gator didn t go down without a fight. After the family got some large hooks into the gator, Mandy Stokes aimed her 20-gauge shotgun at the sweet spot behind the alligator s IN FOCUS PLUS WEDNESDAY 20 AUGUST 2014 eyes. That s where she was told to aim during a mandatory training class for Alabama gator hunters. She pulled the trigger, but the gator s head was too far beneath the water s surface. All it did was make this gator mad, Mandy Stokes told Al.com. Fear had taken hold at this point. The gator surged forward and towed the 17-foot boat and its five passengers across the creek at a startling speed, the hunters said. The towing continued until the boat crashed into a tree stump in the creek, sending the crew spilling on top of each other. Eventually, Mandy Stokes got another shot. When I pulled the trigger this time, by Karasala Vijayalakshmi water just exploded on all of us, she said. This time, she killed the alligator. Anyone within a hundred miles probably heard the mixed screams of relief, joy and exhilaration, John Stokes said. They tied the gator to one side of the boat and hugged the opposite side so it wouldn t tip over as they made an hour-long trek back to their truck. The family planned to send the gator to a taxidermy shop. Beyond that, they re not sure what they re going to do with it.
