While a coin such as this was never or rarely seen by the queen s subjects other than nobility, it was a staple at Court and viewed by those abroad as emblematic of Elizabeth s reign, in sharp contrast to the questionable and much unwanted money of the kingdom as it remained at the end of her father s rule. Almost from the very beginning, the queen sought to restore her money to renown, and as Challis notes (A New History of the Royal Mint, page 248), Elizabeth s notable convercion of the base monyes to the prestinat state of sterlings has rightly been regarded from her own day to this as an important achievement, one which, as Camden put it, turned to her greater, yea greatest, glory.

Consider that, three centuries later in the early 20 th century, a pint of beer cost an average of one farthing, and the buying power of this coin in 1643 becomes staggering. The only reason to create it was war, to pay for mountains of supplies at King Charles s tentative quarters as he was pursued by Oliver Cromwell s army. Once he escaped London, his principal holdout was at Oxford, where this fabulous coin was minted. The fortress and mint operated from 1642 to 1646, and the money issued from Oxford varied from small change to pay soldiers to large gold. It might be claimed that the king s visage on many of his coins, so crudely minted in the main, was one of fright. On his triple-unites his armoured body is best represented. We see him fully armed, crowned, holding a long sword out before him but also carrying the olive branch for peace over his shoulder. Surely Charles would have preferred to see peace return, and himself returned to his throne in London. The jewel he wears on a heavy chain around his neck has not been identified but it may be an artistic version of the fabled Alfred Jewel, lost for three centuries and only rediscovered in 1693, but associated with the king s power for a thousand years. The reverse of this massive coin is even more intriguing. Strewn in three lines upon a flowing banner is the Latin abbreviation of Charles s famous Declaration made at Wellington in 1642 in which he proposed renewal of the Protestant religion, the retention of the laws of his kingdom with him as king, and the liberty granted to his subjects as protected by himself and his parliament. This in fact became a declaration of war when Cromwell rejected his offer. Oxford and the other regional mints were quickly assembled to produce money from what precious metal could be found, often the plate of colleges or aristocrats. These coins are not technically siege pieces but most met the same fate, melting, after war was concluded. They were destroyed. So, too, was King Charles I. Within six years of the minting of this most impressive, kingly coin, Charles was captured and executed. With him perished the ancient divine right of kings, for upon the Restoration the powers of governing differed greatly, most of the monarch s ancient authority being placed in the hands of Parliament. The king s son, Charles II, assumed the position of figurehead even though he was still revered by monarchists and the majority of his subjects. Coinage would continue to be issued in the monarch s name with his image predominant, but the kingdom would never again be the same, nor would any coin ever again be struck with such declarative authority as produced Charles Stuart s huge triple-unites.

She was young and untried, but an immense history lay before both her and her empire. Engraver William Wyon s majestic image of her as the mythical fairy queen (the delicate lady Una, companion of the Redcrosse Knight in Book One of the allegorical poem) seemed then, and still today, to capture the spirit of the Romantic Age, when adventuring ruled the British mind and the whole world seemed Britain s for the taking. Over the coming six decades, both triumph and defeat would transform the British public s wondrous romanticism of the early 19 th century into the harsh realities of conquest and dominion, as Great Britain reached the peak of its imperial ambitions. Curiously, Victoria s most famous coin occurs with two small variant reverse legends, based on Psalm 119:133 and translating to state, or perhaps to pray, May God Direct My Steps. William Wyon seemed to sense and express this untenable future of the Empire by the use of this legend. His majestic image of the queen symbolically guiding the British imagination, engraved so deeply and boldly on this wonderful coin, evoked in the public a sense of power and an unquenchable belief in Britain s right to be great. Here indeed is a true masterpiece of the engraver s art.

(Diakov [R 3 ]), integral suspension loop, struck with a light matt surface, minor handling marks and scratch on reverse near the loop, extremely fine, rare, and a particularly handsome image of the last tsar! Nikolai Aleksandrovich Romanov was born near St. Petersburg on 18 May He was the eldest son of Tsar Alexander III, and when he succeeded his father in 1894 he had no real experience in governing. He married Princess Alexandra of Hesse-Darmstadt in the same year he gained the throne, and within a few years they had four daughters and a son, Alexis, who suffered from haemophilia, a disease of the blood. It was a time of colonial expansion by European powers, and not to be outdone by rivals Tsar Nicholas encouraged Russian expansion into Manchuria, which provoked war with Japan in Russia was defeated and this led to internal strikes and riots until, in January 1905, on Bloody Sunday, the army in St. Petersburg shot into a crowd demanding radical reforms. The coming storm would alter Russian history forever. In quick succession, the renegade priest Rasputin, who exerted excessive influence over the Romanovs, was murdered by irritated nobles in late 1916, and just two months later demonstrations disrupted in the renamed capital, Petrograd. The army deserted Nicholas, who was forced to abdicate, grant a constitution, and watch the Duma (parliament) take control that had always been the right of the monarchy. The royal family were imprisoned and moved to a number of secret locations, finally being held at Yekaterinburg in the Urals. By October of 1917, the Bolsheviks seized control of the shaky, provisional government. Civil war erupted. In the middle of July 1918, the former tsar and his entire family were infamously executed by their captors as anti-bolshevik forces grew nearer to Yekaterinburg. It has long been believed that the leader of the Bolsheviks, Vladimir Lenin, personally ordered the last of the Romanovs to be put to death.

English legends, including value or denomination, around curled and facing imperial dragon (KM.Y203; L&M.133; Kann 26), authenticated and graded by PCGS as Specimen 65, boldly detailed and with rich, multi-hued grey toning, fully original and possessing truly delightful surfaces; clearly one of the finest known examples of this classic issue, and very rare as a Proof or Specimen strike as designated by PCGS 35,000-40,000 An ancient province, Kwangtung (or Guangdon) occupies much of the southeast region of China, ranging from the river valleys to the coast and close to both Macau and Hong Kong on the South China Sea. Its name literally means the eastern expanse and it has long had a large population and rich resources. Because it was remote in ancient times from the centre of power (on the North China Plain), its inhabitants indulged in concepts and trade that were often at odds with those held by the royal elites. This attracted European colonials, who sought to trade for Chinese goods; the French and English influences are seen in the legend of this coin s reverse. The coin s design suggests its appeal as a trade dollar, and indeed most known examples of this type indicate strong commercial use; the vast majority of mintages perished. The province was the homeland of Sun Yat-Sen, the founder of modern China. In the last decade of the twentieth century, Kwangtung became the economic powerhouse among China s various provinces. This wonderful coin - only 2 other examples are graded SP65 or higher by NGC or PCGS - survives as a graceful symbol of modern China. 457 China, Empire, 20 cents, undated (1908), Chinese characters, rev. dragon, legend around (KM.Y13; L&M.12), authenticated and graded by NGC as About Uncirculated Details, Surface Hairlines, scarce

As the Qing Dynasty came to an end, lawlessness and widespread civil unrest set in. The best-known activist against the dynasty, Sun Yat-Sen, gathered followers for a republican cause beginning in 1905 in Tokyo, and many Chinese living in Japan joined his cause. Rebellion began in October 1911 and quickly spread from Hupei Province. Many Chinese soldiers joined the revolt. An era of warlords and revolution ensued throughout the 24 provinces. Sun Yat-Sen was declared President of the Republic on the first day of 1912 but the republic lacked a formal army. Conflict continued and millions lost their lives. Foreign powers sought influence as well as the protection of its emigrés, officials and missionaries; American and other gunboats patrolled Chinese rivers, often causing anger among native inhabitants. The Communist party appeared in 1921, and in 1928 the Chinese Nationalist Party brought a degree of unification to the land, but during the first two decades of the twentieth century bandits declared themselves to be generals and even emperors; warlords ruled various portions of China until 1927, when the Nationalist movement finally subdued much of the internal fighting. A vast silver coinage appeared during this exuberant era of the warlords, in various denominations, with the largest silver coins providing the best images of the men who either claimed or possessed power. The charming coin in this lot, struck (but not dated) in 1923, is a particularly fine example of such nationalist images, including the crossed flags seen on the reverse side. If you are seeking status coins, this Tsao Kun dollar will become a prize possession.

Only one other example of this coin has been graded PF66 Deep Cameo by PCGS. The golden mohur and other issues of British colonial origin, as original or contemporary proofs (or specimens), are extremely rare as a class. Their textures display matt-like qualities as well as fine wire edges. Early restrikes, when seen, tend to reveal heavy cleaning as well as very noticeable die-polishing, both of which make for disturbed surfaces. Later restrikes tend to be of finer quality. The practice of officially re-striking classic Indian coins came to a conclusion in 1970, giving some age even to the latest pieces. Research into the restrikes remains tenuous; this piece appears to fall into the category of issues made for collectors after 1955.

He stood nearly seven feet tall, a powerful man of seemingly boundless energy, and yet his physical stature was but a reflection of the extraordinary legacy he left. His accomplishments are legendary. Blessed with an amazing ability to learn, he personally directed numerous state matters, was a highly accomplished military and naval commander, mastered more than twenty trades (from dentist and shoemaker to shipbuilder), travelled throughout Muscovy and visited the West twice to pursue knowledge and instituted the Christian calendar throughout Russia. He ruled with an iron will and a dedication to work that flustered all around him, and could be violently temperamental (especially with those who failed to live up to his own standards), overtly crude, and even cruel - he personally executed traitors, pulled the teeth of friends at court, was alternately blasphemous and amorous in the extreme, and drank liquor with the most hardened soldier. Because war was almost constant in the Russia of his day, Peter devised war games. His victories in the Great Northern War gave Russia ice-free ports for its navy. Peter established the famous dockyards of Archangel, and in 1703 the city of St. Petersburg. In 1708, he vanquished a Cossack rebellion which had spread throughout southern Russia. And finally his armies destroyed the Swedish army, one of the most feared in all Europe, in 1709 in the Battle of Poltava, one of the most decisive in history, where Peter himself led his troops into battle and, luckily, somehow escaped injury. The victory gave the Baltic to Russia, was the reason his parliament declared Peter The Great, and established Russia as a major power. The constant warfare meant, however, that Peter was forced to tax almost everything imaginable, from beehives to beards, in order to defend the nation, earning him the hatred of many of his subjects. Nor did he garner much love from his son, busy as he was modernising Russian government and the Russian military. He died in February 1725, worn out by his lifestyle, losing consciousness just moments after naming his own heir to the throne of Russia under the new law of succession that he himself had declared.

Territorial and religious battles dominated this part of central Europe for centuries, and the seizing of treasure was part and parcel of the struggles. This large gold coin, representing much wealth in its day, was likely made of gold previously fashioned into the coins of numerous former rulers, possibly even of the Turks of the Ottoman Empire, to which its style is not dissimilar.

The sultan s objective was to pit Christian against Christian, specifically the Catholic Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II against the Bohemian Calvinist Frederick V. (Bernardi 15), good extremely fine and a rarely encountered type for date Abbasid 1st period, al-rashid ( h), dirham, Madinat al-salam 170h, rev. inner margin: mimma amra bihi Abd Allah Harun amir al-mu minin, wt. 2.96gms. (Lowick 1269; Album 219.6), extremely fine and scarce This type of reverse is found on the coinage of Madinat al-salam only in the years between 170h and 179h. With each succeeding year throughout this decade the first inner marginal legend became less and less prominent until it finally degenerated into a totally illegible series of small annulets. It is interesting to note that during this same period the coinage of Madinat al-salam appears to have been struck in much smaller quantities that those from other mints such as al-muhammadiya. Why this is so remains a mystery. 732 Abbasid 1st period, al-ma mun ( h), dirham, Madinat Tahiriya bi Misr 204h, obv. field, between 2nd and 3rd lines: al-sari, in exergue: al-maghrib, rev. field: lillah/ Muhammad rasul Allah/ salla Allah aleyhi wa salam/li l-khalifa al-mu mun/tahir, 22 mm., die axis 9:00. wt. 3.01gms. (Lowick -), about extremely fine and previously unrecorded The mint name on this coin is disfigured by a large die flaw which makes the reading Madinat al-tahiriya highly conjectural. The word Misr, however, is clear. Because dirhams from Misr during this period are so rarely encountered, when a new one is found it is capable of quite surprising results.

157 Abbasid 2nd period, al-mutawakkil ( h), dirham, Dimashq 247h, wt. 2.95gms., about extremely fine and very rare Abbasid 2nd period, al-mu tazz ( h), dirham, Madinat Mah al-kufa 251h, wt. 2.95gms., about extremely fine and very rare This is the only occasion that the mint of Mah al-kufa was called Madinat. 735 Abbasid 2nd period, al-muktafi ( h), dinar, al-rafiqa 292h, wt. 3.84gms. (not in Balog, unpublished), about extremely fine and as far as is known unique 15,000-18,000 Paul Balog has the following to say about the circumstances behind the issuance of this coin: When news of the invasion of Egypt by the French king Louis IX (St. Louis) and the Crusaders reached him the father of Turanshah, al-salih Ayyub, was already very ill. He travelled to the Nile Delta in order to direct the military operations in person, but died in his camp on 15 Sha ban 647 h. During the next several days his death was kept secret until the Crusaders were routed by his troops. Then his son, al-mu azzam Turanshah, was hastily summoned from his princely residence at Hisn- Kayfa. He arrived in Damascus late in Ramadan and was proclaimed Sultan the next day. He remained there for three weeks, was persuaded to proceed on to Egypt, and finally arrived in Mansura after another month. He was, however, present when the Frankish army, totally crushed, surrendered and Louis IX was taken captive. However, Turanshah speedily alienated the Egyptian Mamluk amirs by his rudeness and by favouring his own courtiers, which was part of his plan to establish his own authority. When he began to threaten the Egyptian Mamluk nobility personally, rebellion broke out and he was murdered at the end of Muharram 648 h. With his assassination Ayyubid rule of Egypt ceased; many authorities date the end of the Ayyubid Empire from this time. While Turanshah s silver coinage is very rare, this is the first time a gold coin struck in his name has come to light.

161 Bahri Mamluk, al-mansur Ali ( h), dinar, al-iskandariya 657h, wt. 6.06gms. 162 761 Rum Saljuq, The Three Brothers ( h), dinar, Qunya 653h, wt. 4.29gms. (Spengler and Sayles Vol. I - The Artuqids 2.4; Album c), about very fine, very rare The earliest copper coinage of this dynasty was a continuation of the Christian coinage of the Byzantine Empire, but shortly after this issue was struck the Artuqids replaced Christian symbolism with a less controversial astrological design. 763 Ottoman, Salim I b. Bayazid ( h) sultani, Qustantiniyya 918h, wt. 3.46gms. (Pere 116), about extremely fine, rare

163 764 Ottoman, Ahmad III b. Muhammad ( h), gold five ziynet ashrafi, Qustantaniyya 1115h, wt gms. (Pere 504; KM.182), small piercing at 12 o clock, otherwise about extremely fine, very rare in this condition It was during the reign of Ahmad III that the Ottomans adopted the Venetian custom of striking multiples of the ducat for use as ornaments and savings. The mint charged a percentage of gold to earn a profit on this special coinage. Because these coins were normally mounted for suspension they suffered inevitable damage, but this example is in particularly good condition.

164 765 Ottoman, Uthman III b. Mustafa ( h), gold ziynet three funduq, Islambul 1168h ha, wt gms. (Pere 590), small piercing at 12 o clock, otherwise about extremely fine, rare in this condition The Turkish term ziynet means ornamented, which describes the decorative border found on the obverse and reverse of this coinage. It was customary for these coins to have several different designs. Presumably these could be chosen according to the purchasers preferences. 766 Ottoman, Mahmud II, sultani, AH.1241 (1826), Arabic legends both sides, sultan year in third line (KM.66; Fr.1), authenticated and graded by NGC as About Uncirculated Extremely scarce and rarely offered for sale. (KM 742), very slight traces of mounting at 12 o clock otherwise brilliant good extremely fine, rare After a long gap between the reigns of Mahmud II and the later years of Abd al-hamid II, the mint resumed production of the ziynet coinage in 500, 250, 100, 50 and 25 qurush denominations. Of these the 250 is probably the scarcest and is almost never found without traces of mounting.

165 769 Ottoman, Abd al-hamid II, ziynet 250 qurush, Qustantaniyya 1293h, ry 34, wt gms. (KM.742), very slight traces of mounting at 12 o clock otherwise brilliant good extremely fine, extremely rare Mint records show that 931 examples of this denomination were struck in the last year of Abd al-hamid s long reign and in the first regnal year of his successor, Muhammad V Rashad. (Bernardi 302Mh), brilliant uncirculated and very rare as such The Qur anic inscription found on the obverse of this coin is most unusual and probably refers to the political situation of the time. It can be presumed that it refers to the dominant position of Nasr II in the Jibal. 771 Ilkhan, Abaqa ( h) dinar, Baghdad 665h, wt. 5.68gms. 170 The Barker Collection Love Tokens and Engraved Coins to be auctioned in June 2016 Collectors have long seen engraved coins as a form of Folk Art, similar in many ways to scrimshaw but worked on metal, not marine ivory. Like scrimshaw the origins of engraving coins are in the art of the sailor, leaving on a voyage, a long separation looming and with his return by no means certain. The present collection includes a number of ship portraits. Another category of persons leaving on a voyage, a long separation looming and with return by no means certain, were the convicts being transported to Australia. For them the tokens reflect a long voyage from which return home was but a dream. However the assumption that all such engraved coins were the art of the criminal classes and sailors has been exaggerated for, as this collection demonstrates, they encompass, in a simple engraving all aspects of every day life, love and death. The quality of the images varies; small is the palette, most often a copper halfpenny of George II or George III, on which a story has to be told. There is humour, there is history and there is beauty; there are names without images. Some are totally amateur others more obviously the work of professional and semi-professional engravers. In December 1994 the Dennis Vorley Collection of Love Tokens and Engraved Coins came under the hammer and having been collected over a span of some 60 years, the collection was believed to have been perhaps the largest ever offered for sale. Now, a generation later comes a collection of over 500 pieces formed over a more modest 40 years and St James s Auctions is delighted to have been chosen as the selling agent. Lesbian Love, whilst the collection has many Love Tokens, there are three, grouped in a single lot, that stand out for depicting forbidden love. Here a Georgian Halfpenny is engraved with two women standing holding hands, My Love is True to Non[e] but You My Heart is Fixt I Cannot Range I Like my Choyc[e] to well to Change Dentistry, two tokens advertise Martin van Butchell, a colleague of the famous William Hunter MD, who describes himself as Blunt Operator for the Teeth and Bleeder. van Butchell is also remembered for keeping his embalmed wife s body resting at his window! Canterbury Cathedral, the façade of the Cathedral is pictured on two coins, a George II Young Head silver Crown and a Queen Anne Half- Crown, both undoubtably by the same hand

171 A selection from the splendid group of 11 large smoothed and flattened coins telling the story of the Mapplebecks, a story covering a stag hunt, dancing, a pub, the military, London landmarks, and the Battle of Waterloo each Many animals are depicted on coins, here a wonderfully naïve squirrel on a George II Halfpenny Transportation to Australia, Thomas Thrush, a convict of the notorious Second Fleet, commemorated on a Georgian Halfpenny and shown wearing shackles from his waist to his ankles. On their arrival The Sydney Cove Chronicle of 30 June, 1790 recorded, As they came on shore, these wretched people were hardly able to move hand or foot. Such as could not carry themselves upon their legs, crawled upon all fours. A sight most outrageous to our eyes were the marks of leg irons upon the convicts, some so deep that one could nigh on see the bones The Wife at Home, a Georgian coin engraved with a fearsome woman brandishes a stool and large spoon a splendid depiction of her indoors Dr Joseph Priestly ( ), the scholar, teacher, scientist and dissenting clergyman, is named on a crudely worked George III Halfpenny, Dr PRIESTLY went to America 1794, whilst the reverse names Cooper s Town. Cooper s Town [now Cooperstown, PA] derived its name form the Anglo-American economist Thomas Cooper ( ), who, like Priestly had been in France prior to England s declaration of War. He was in America in 1794 and visited Priestly and his wife, much influencing him in the latter years before his death. Priestly had by then settled in Northumberland (where his house still stands)
