1 The Chinese Coin Collection of Dr. John A. Snell by Dale Dailey Dr. John Abner Snell served as a missionary doctor in China from 1909 until his unexpected death in March, During most of his years in China, Dr. Snell served as chief administrator and surgeon at the Methodist Hospital in Soochow (Suzhou) China. In addition to his medical responsibilities, Dr. Snell began collecting and trading Chinese coins. His extensive collection has remained in the Snell family locked away in its original steamer trunk for 75 years, forgotten by the numismatic community until now Dr. Snell became an expert on Chinese coins of the early twentieth century. He wrote an article, "Chinese Copper Coins of the Twentieth Century" which was published in the June 1932 issue of The Numismatist. In the illustrated article, he describes the history of coinage in China after Dr. Snell was also cited by A. M. Tracey Woodward in a 1931 article in The China Journal for his knowledge of Chinese mints. 1 Dr. Snell's collection consists of approximately 950 coins of which 765 are copper and brass of various denominations and 185 are silver. 1 A. M. Tracey Woodward collected over 20,000 different variations and wrote many articles on provincial coins. His collection later became part of the Norman Jacobs collection.

2 Brief biography of Dr. John A. Snell John Abner Snell was born in Knife Falls, Minnesota on October 28, 1880, the fifth of eight children. When he was around five, his family made the long trek from northern Minnesota to central Florida, then a swampy, insect-infested frontier. They settled in Kissimmee, Florida where John grew up and graduated from high school. At home, John received a solid Methodist education, receiving training both at home and at Sunday school. At eleven, he decided to "accept Jesus Christ as my personal savior and join the church." He later wrote that at fourteen, there came into his "life a desire to devote myself to God's service. It was what I considered a call." Nineteen-year-old John Snell entered Emory College in He transferred to Peabody Normal College in Nashville after his first year and completed his undergraduate education on May 27, During his junior year at Peabody, John met his future wife, Grace Evelyn Birkett, who was also a student. Soon after completing his undergraduate degree, John left for California for two years to teach school and earn money to help support his mother and younger brothers. John returned to Nashville in 1905 and debated whether he ought to be a minister or a doctor. His pragmatic decision was to become a doctor feeling there was a greater need for doctors and that his life would count for more. John entered Vanderbilt Medical College in 1905 and he and Grace were married on November 1, In 1908, with graduation approaching, John applied to the Methodist Episcopal Church - South to work in the foreign missions. In his application, he wrote that he believed that the missions would allow him to accomplish "the purpose I have come to believe God has for my life." He expressed his "intense desire to help the needy" by making the ultimate commitment: "I could not think of going into so great a work other than for life."

3 Dr. Snell arrived in China in He quickly proved himself to be an unusually gifted surgeon who achieved an almost mythic stature. His siblings would proudly describe themselves as the brothers or sisters of Dr. John Snell, the famous missionary doctor. Among his medical colleagues, he was considered to be one of the most progressive and capable surgeons of modern times. Vanderbilt University honored him as one of its illustrious alumni. Many of his Chinese patients considered him to be nothing less than a miracle worker. Dr. Snell's death came unexpectedly, but in the line of duty. The following account describes his last hours: On March 2, 1936, Soochow Hospital and the Methodist Mission suffered an irreparable loss in the death of Dr. John A. Snell. On Monday, February 24, he had half a dozen operations scheduled. After the first he had to call for a chair and rest a few minutes. In spite of a temperature of 102, he drove through with the second. The next morning he was removed to the hospital and a fight began for his life, the local doctors calling in their colleagues from Huchow and Chanchow Hospitals of the same mission. But all efforts to save his life were in vain. The cemetery chapel was far too small to hold the throng that gathered to pay a last tribute to a man whose surgical skill had saved many of their lives. See on the internet for additional biographical information on Dr. Snell.

4 The Dr. John Abner Snell collection and its history The collection consists of a vast array of mostly 20 th Century Chinese coins, each meticulously tied with silk twine into fifteen custom made, fabric lined trays that fit into a massive 60lb heavy steamer trunk. This historic collection represents a time capsule of Chinese numismatics from Empire to Republic issues, augmented by an extensive offering of Provincial issues in copper, brass and silver. There are many highlights among the group including patterns, prototypes, off-metal strikings, rare mules and rare die pairings as well as several highly sought after regular and commemorative issues from minors to crown-sized denominations, clandestine, unusual early forgery coinage and even a selection of coins from other nations of Asia and abroad. The collection returned from China with Dr. Snell's widow, Grace Snell, in The coins were given to John Raymond Snell, the oldest son of Dr. and Mrs. Snell, probably sometime in the early 1940s. John Raymond Snell loaned the collection to a brother-in-law, Irvine Moffett, who was also born in China and was an avid collector. Upon Irvine Moffett's death in April, 1990, the collection was returned to John Raymond Snell. John Raymond Snell died in April, 2003 and the collection passed to his wife, Florence Moffett Snell. Mrs. Snell died in November, Her will designated that her estate be distributed equally among the couple's five children. The five siblings have agreed to offer collection at auction so that the coins will end up in the hands of the numismatic public who will truly enjoy and appreciate them.
