2 THE KAMEHAMEHA COIN The Kamehameha Schools/Bernice Pauahi Bishop Estate* announce their Centennial Coins for 1986, 1987 and s i z e First conceived by Mr. Richard Lyman, the Estate ' s 84 year old President of the Board of Trustees, the designs were inspired by Or. Mitchell, the Schools' 50 year scholar and renown author. The three year Centennial commenced with a Special Mint Ceremony of the Trustees, Governor, Lt. Governor and special ou~~ts minting thpir nwn coins on Founder's Day, December 19, The Kamehameha Coin honors the Schools' namesake and the founder ' s great- grandfather, Kamehameha the Great, who united the Hawaiian Islands under one kingdom. The obverse bust of Kamehameha is beautifully engraved from a watercolor painted from life by the French painter Louis Choris. Extremely well detailed, the engraving is complete with IMUA (FORWARD!), the Kamehameha battle cry and school motto. The reverse features the Hawaiian Islands and quotes Kamehameha's ~ 11 last words spoken on May 8, 1819 ; E ' oni wale no 'oukou i ku'u pono.. 11 (Endless is the good that I have given you to enjoy... ) Only three hundred Silver Kamehameha Coins and a few Gold have been issued to date. Thank you for the wonderful letters of "kokua" (support). The bad news is that since my back has kept me down and delayed this newsletter, MINTLINE will now be an annual issue with early or special editions as my back permits. Please excuse any delay in addressing your letters. So this is an "Early Edition" of our annual newsletter to be published this October. It features two very important pieces of Kamehameha and has a lot of other news. Be sure to read the Editorial which has a Christmas Special in it and the "Dear Members" section for current bid/ask information on our past issues. Again, I apologize to all of you who did not receive as many 1986 Hawaii Dalas as you ordered. Limited to one per collector, you got the special mahalo piece that I intended it to be. 5 EDITORIAL The problem I have with Christmas... is that I love Christmas. I love the religiousness. I love playing Santa Claus for my two sons. I love the food, the music, the coins I get and the coins I make. And there inlies the problem. Making Coins at Christmas - time. As a one - man mint this invariably takes a lot of time from my children, just when I want to be with them the most. Now I ' m not suggesting that I am not going to sell coins at Christmas, because I know from your many letters that gift giving Hawaiian coins has become a tradition with many of you. But I was just wondering. about the logic of a Christmas Special in the Spring... now Spring is also a very happy time, and with the recent price fluctuations the logic is that since I plan to feature this coin at Christmas, when prices may be higher, why not put a few classic Christmas presents away early and save $61 when you order 4 unnumbered Ho ' olako Dalas for only $99. Would help you defray December's costs over a whole year. But please be advised, I have found coins to a great gifts anytime!
