13 An Extremely Rare Opportunity To Acquire an Example of One of the Only True Gold Coins of the Reign of King Edward V BH015 Edward V (9th April 25th June 1483), Angel, St Michael spearing dragon, initial mark halved sun and rose both sides, saltire stops both sides, legend reads edward di gra rex angl z franc, rev ship sailing right, quartered shield on hull, E and rose by mast above, legend reads per crvcem tvam salva nos xpc redemt, 5.06g (Schneider 482/-; B&W type XXII no 8/9; N.1626; S.2144A). The only type of coin in any metal that is definitively of King Edward V, fully round and of good weight, a pleasing very fine for the issue and of the highest rarity. 65,000 Newly sourced, this fresh specimen of the distinctive Edward V Angel brings the total number of known specimens to six that have been in commerce, three of which are listed by Woodhead in the entry and footnote to Schneider 482. As far as we can ascertain there is no specimen of this exact type of coin in the British Museum, or the Fitzwilliam Museum, two of the biggest numismatic institutional collections in this country. This coin has the same obverse die as the Schneider coin (482) and the same reverse die as the G C Drabble specimen sold at Glendining on 4th July 1939 lot 119 for 20 to A H Baldwin. The Angel with this distinctive DI GRA obverse has been formally identified as issued within the 76 days of the reign of the 12 year old Edward V, who was deposed by his uncle Richard, Duke of Gloucester and later died in the Tower of London with his younger brother. Only the Mint of London was active during this period, and thus far only the Angel gold coins have proven definitively to be of King Edward V, resulting from the research detailed in Schneider (Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles volume 47), pages In this research most significantly it appears from contemporary evidence that the DI GRA dies were ordered by Lord Hastings by mandate from the Lord Treasurer and a mere 49lb and 10oz of gold coin struck before the 13th June 1483, it could not be later as Hastings was executed upon that day. The mintage of the Angel and presumably it s half was therefore tiny when compared with surrounding issues. The research detailed in Schneider is based on Webb-Ware s still unpublished 1985 essay which has had key elements gradually incorporated into the listings in the Standard Catalogue of British Coins. Thus giving the A number 2144A listing the Edward V dies seperately to those of Edward IV and revising the older work of Christopher Blunt and C A Whitton. Lord Stewartby s English Coins published in 2009 also incorporates elements of this work and discusses this issue in more detail on pages

S.2399). A little ragged around rim, some traces of red wax in lettering, about very fine and extremely rare being the ultimate transitional piece of 1547 going into the posthumous period of Henry VIII. 2,250 The same reverse die as Schneider 651, Whitton (BNJ XXVI, page 181 variant 4), attributes this coin to the Posthumous period based on the use of lozenge stops (plate X no.12). North catalogues this piece in the 3 rd Coinage of Henry based on the use of the pellet in annulet initial mark which the current Spink catalogue also reflects. Tel: +44 (0) Fax: +44 (0)

Pierced good very fine and very rare. 950 Though produced by now by milled coin technique, the touch-pieces are included in this section of the list due to their affinity with the gold Angel. According to Woolf ( The Sovereign Remedy published by BANS) James II was far more prolific in his touching ceremonies than his elder brother, with no limit to the number he would touch on a given day. In his first year as King alone he touched as many as 14,364 for the King s evil. However in reigning for a shorter time his 12 month average for each year was 12,000 people, and he was spending at least 3,000 a year on the manufacture of gold touch pieces such as this. In total we are therefore looking at mintage of James II touch-pieces at just under half the amount produced for Charles II, proven by their rarity today. The design of the ship on obverse was carried over from the Charles II touch-piece that was a true image of the largest ship afloat in the world at that time The Royal Sovereign freshly named in 1660 having been originally launched as The Sovereign of the Seas at Woolwich in Nick-named the Golden Devil by the Dutch for her extensive gilt decoration, she weighed 1,605 tons and could carry up to 104 guns if required. Re-fitted in 1651 as merely The Sovereign and again in 1684 she was later destroyed by fire at Chatham Docks on 27 th January Woolf has the successive names for this ship in reverse order to what Naval records show, and we herewith have foot-noted them in the correct order. The Royal Sovereign did make another numismatic appearance previously on the Pattern Farthings of Touched by Queen Anne Herself, an Extremely Rare Gold Touchpiece BH048 Anne ( ), gold Touch-Piece, pierced in the style of an Angel, machine-made, three masted ship in full sail left, a depiction of the The Royal Sovereign, anna.d:g.m.b: f:et.h:reg: beaded border surrounding each side, rev struck en médaille, St Michael slaying dragon, soli. deo gloria. edge plain, 3.21g (Woolf O-/R2). Pierced, the punctuation of the obverse not recorded by Woolf, good very fine and very rare. 1,250 According to Woolf circa 19,400 pieces were struck throughout the reign of Queen Anne who was more reluctant to be involved in the touching ceremonies. This makes them the rarest of the gold touch-pieces on mintage figures alone. This is again borne out by their rarity today. 49

27 HALFCROWNS Unusual Dated Pattern Halfcrown Engraved by Nicholas Briot BH065 Charles I ( ), Pattern of Halfcrown dimensions, 1628, by Nicholas Briot, mint mark Star, King on prancing horse right with sword upright on shoulder, stony ground below,.n.briot.f. in exergue with beaded inner circle, initial mark flower, o rex.da. facilem. cvrsvm, lozenge stops, outer beaded circle both sides, rev crowned quartered shield of arms, date either side, inner beaded circle, atqve. avdacibvs. annve. coeptis. edge, plain, 15.07g (Brooker 1258; MIi 252/32; N.2673). Light short tone scratch in obverse field, nearly very fine and very rare. 1,950 The Latin legend literally translates as O King, give an easy course and nod with favour on bold undertakings finely engraved by Nicholas Briot, there has been continued debate as to whether this coin is a pattern for a Halfcrown or if this is a medallion to commemorate the La Rochelle Expedition of 1628, as listed in Medallic Illustrations of British History. This cataloguer favours the piece being a pattern for a Halfcrown, as the weight is correct for that denomination, and coupled with it being struck with an inverted coin die-axis it leans toward being a pattern for coinage, albeit with an unusual legend and date. In 1628 Nicholas Briot held a monopoly on portraiture of the King by coin or medal and received a salary for this privilege of 250 a year. The entry in Medallic Illustrations is based on the contemporary opinion of Evelyn, who lived at the time (though he would have been an 8 year old at the date of this medallion), that it commemorated the La Rochelle Expedition, where the English intervened in the disagreement between the French Royal forces of Louis XIII and the Huguenot stronghold of La Rochelle, essentially a Catholic Protestant disagreement. However it hardly seems viable to commemorate the second (by the Duke of Buckingham) of two unsuccessful expeditions to the city of La Rochelle, whose inhabitants surrendered without a further fight by the 28th October Presumably the evidence in Evelyn s time was further weighted toward it being a medallion by the fact that Briot s name is spelt out with his initial and F for Fecit as the maker a practice usually only seen on medals at this juncture. However, proposed as a pattern for a coin it seems evident to the cataloguer that Briot no doubt wanted to show all and sundry who the maker was, and engraved his name in full - a practice we do not see again till Thomas Simon upon his Crown proposals circa , and then later with Benedetto Pistrucci engraving his Crown coinage of George III. This piece seems much more viable than the Crown size patterns also the work of Briot, listed as Brooker which are accepted as proposals for coin patterns even though they are well under the weight of a silver Crown. In fact their weights are just over half of that of a true currency crown and they are much more medallic in the nature of their design. A piece worthy of further documentary research. BH066 Charles I, Halfcrown, Bristol Mint, 1644, King on horseback left, BR monogram below, banded plume in field, inner beaded circle surrounding, initial mark banded plume, outer beaded circle both sides, rev Declaration in two lines at centre between parallel lines, date below, BR monogram below over an inverted BR monogram, three plumes above Declaration, initial mark pellet, 14.87g (Brooker 985; Morrieson D-6; Bull 643/6c; N.2491; S.3009). The finest portrait of the King we have seen on a Bristol Halfcrown, super detail on faces of King and his horse, a few light striations on obverse from annealing flaws in the silver flan, more so striated on the reverse and double struck, toned extremely fine and very rare. 2,950 Bull in Volume IV of his series on the Halfcrowns of Charles I, lists six specimens only in commerce with the BR monogram overstrike. This specimen is the ex Alan Morris and KB Coin specimen listed as very fine, however this coin is clearly better quality than that, and appears to be finer than the EF Lockett specimen as the detail of the strike of this piece is so fine when compared to the Lockett part V plate. 55

28 BH067 Charles I, Halfcrown, Oxford Mint, 1644, King on horseback left over rough ground, Oxford plume in field, inner beaded circle surrounding, initial mark banded plume, lozenge stops in legend, outer beaded circle both sides, rev Declaration in two lines at centre between parallel lines, date and ox below, each between pellets, three plumes above Declaration between pellets, the central one larger, pellet stop initial mark and in legend, 15.03g (Brooker -; Morrieson G-14/G-13; Bull 617/14 / 617/13; N.2423; S.2965). Usual crude style, some striking flaws, toned, with associated weakness, about very fine for issue and an unrecorded muling of two Bull varieties, therefore extremely rare. 1,500 Maurice Bull does not record this die combination in Volume IV of his series on the Halfcrowns of Charles I. Even the reverse illustrated as Bull 617/13 differs on the left part of the legend to the coin offered here, but this appears due to double striking on the example chosen for illustration. This is the only specimen we are aware of. However this altered the gold : silver ratio significantly and encouraged the export of silver coin to the Continent. Therefore on the 7 th September the weight standard was restored after 27,616 of crown gold and 6,768 of silver had been coined. Much of this lightweight issue would no doubt have been immediately re-coined into the heavier weight restored standard and survivors of this period of less than a month are extremely rare in silver and of the highest rarity in gold.
