Toned good very fine and very rare. 5,000 Metcalf states that these pale gold issues usually consist of 10-20% gold alloyed with other metal. Attractively toned, a superb little coin, extremely fine and very rare. 3,750 AS011 AS012 AS011 Viking Coinages (c ), Kingdom of York (c ), Penny, Cunetti type, Patriarchal cross, C N V and T at end of each limb of cross, R E X in between with four pellets between each, beaded outer circle surrounding both sides, rev small cross pattée, pellet in two opposing angles, beaded circle and legend surrounding + CVN.:. NET.:. TI.:., 1.50g (N.499; S.993). A little double struck, toned good very fine. 850 Most coins of this type emanated from the famous Cuerdale hoard found 15 th May 1840, this coin has the sort of patination usually associated with coins from this hoard. Dark grey tone, a bold very fine and very rare. 1,750 North lists this moneyer as Rota? This example clearly has the initial letter as a B albeit with a smaller upper loop. Very Rare Circumscription / Floral Type Penny of King Aethelstan AS021 Aethelstan, Penny, circumscription floral type, Moneyer Eadelm, small cross pattée with linear circle surrounding, legend around +ÆĐELSTAN RE.X linear and beaded border surrounding both sides, rev three pellets across centre, Moneyer name in two lines, EADE+ / LM MO, floral spray above and below, 1.43g (N.679; S.1097). Edge a little chipped around rim, otherwise lightly toned, a bold very fine and extremely rare. 7,500 North only lists this type with another different Moneyer who was thought to be based in the Warwick area. 5 Very Rare York Mint Building type Penny of King Aethelstan AS022 Aethelstan, Penny, building type with mint name, York Mint, Moneyer Regnald, small cross pattée with linear circle surrounding, legend around +ÆĐELSTAN RX: beaded border surrounding both sides, rev horizontal ground line across centre, small rectangular building above with triangular slated roof, annulet at apex, legend in two lines either side, EB OR / AC AC, legend in two lines in exergue, REGNALD / :MON:, 1.34g (Mack Syll. 777; N.684; S.1101). Toned, rim chipped, a bold very fine. 750 The moneyer name Ingelgar not listed by North for Eadmund but more usually for Eadred ( ). AS025 Eadred ( ), Penny, two line type, North Eastern Moneyer Hunred, cross pattée with linear circle surrounding, legend around +EADRED REX., pellet at end of legend with crescent above and below, linear and beaded border surrounding both sides, rev Moneyer name in two lines divided by three horizontal crosses, pellet with crescent above and below to right of central cross, tri-pellets above and below, HVNR / ED MO, 1.30g (N.706; S.1105). Slight hairline flan crack, rim chip, weak at two points otherwise very fine. 675 A Rare Portrait Penny of Eadred AS026 Eadred, Penny, portrait type, Moneyer Unbein, crowned bust right to edge of coin, legend around +EADRED REX, linear and beaded border surrounding both sides, rev small cross pattée, linear circle and legend around, VNBEIN MONETA, 1.20g (N.713; S.1115). Flat spot in strike both sides at rear of bust, some lamination around rim near flat spot and slight rim split at opposite side, otherwise a bold very fine and very rare. 2,500 51

Toned, a little weak in parts, otherwise about very fine and very rare. 1,500 Very Rare Chester style Penny of King Eadwig AS028 Eadwig, non-portrait Penny, Chester style, Moneyer Aelfsie, small cross pattée within linear circle, +EADVVIGE RE, outer linear and beaded circle surrounding, rev Moneyer name and legend in three lines, central line reads OE+NO, the E retrograde, rosette of pellets above and below, ÆLFZ / IE M-O, outer linear and beaded border surrounding, 1.53g (N.730; S.1123). Toned, slight flan crack, a bold very fine and very rare. 3,000 AS029 Eadgar ( ), non-portrait Penny, North Western style, Moneyer Eoroth, small cross pattée within linear circle, +EADGAR RE, outer linear and beaded circle surrounding, rev Moneyer name and legend in two lines, central line with annulet either side of central cross, rosette of pellets above and below legend, EOR/ OĐ M, outer linear and beaded border surrounding, 1.29g (N.745; S.1131). Toned, rim chipped, some verdigris, otherwise good very fine. 750 AS030 Edward the Martyr ( ), Portrait Penny, Northampton mint, moneyer probably Cylm, crude diademed and draped bust left within linear circle, legend commences at top of obverse, +EADPEARD REX ANGLOX, outer beaded circle surrounding both sides, rev small cross pattée, linear circle surrounding, + CXN- CM M-O HAMTVN, 1.08g (N 763; S 1142). Toned, weak portrait and one hairline scratch on the reverse, otherwise very fine and very rare. 2,500 The legend on the reverse seems to show a blundering of the moneyer s name Cylm. There is an Eadgar portrait Penny of very similar portrait style and layout of Northampton, with a letter Y not unlike the X on this coin (see SCBI 2:720). The X on the coin offered here, seems to be the product of a letter Y over an inverted Y and the moneyer s name seems to have some repetition making it more than four characters. Toned, a couple of peck marks behind bust and one on reverse, otherwise pleasing very fine. 475 AS035 Aethelred II, Penny, long cross type, Lydford Mint, Moneyer Aelfstan, draped bust left, legend surrounding commences lower left, +EĐELRÆD REX ANGLOX, outer beaded circle surrounding both sides, rev long voided cross with tri-crescent terminals, tiny pellet at centre, +.ÆL FSTA N M O LYDA, 1.60g (BMC type IVa; N.774; S.1151). Toned without peck marks, a bold very fine and rare. 1,000 ex Mrs E M H Norweb, English Coins Part IV, Spink Auction 59, 17th June 1987, lot 1230 Professor G W De Witt, F R Küenker, Auction 137, 11th March 2008, lot 3093 This coin struck from dies of the late Chester style as defined by Blackburn and Lyon in their article Regional Die-Production in Cnut s Quatrefoil Issue chapter 13 of Anglo-Saxon Monetary History. These dies therefore cut and used at Chester. 53

Weak in parts, once cleaned, otherwise very fine. 450 This coin struck from dies of the late class A Thetford style as defined by Blackburn and Lyon in their article Regional Die-Production in Cnut s Quatrefoil Issue chapter 13 of Anglo-Saxon Monetary History. These dies therefore cut at Thetford and supplied for use to strike coinage in Colchester. AS039 Canute, Penny, helmet type ( ), Hertford Mint, Moneyer Leofric, pointed helmet bust left with sceptre, legend commences at top, +cnv t r.ecx :. outer beaded circle surrounding both sides, rev short voided cross with pellet and annulet centre, pellet in annulet in each angle, all within linear circle, +LEOFRIC ON HEO 1.07g (BMC type XIV; N.787; S.1158).
