2 SUMMER 2017 CREATIVE WRITING COURSES All DWC summer workshops are appropriate for students of any experience level. FICTION Crash Course in Flash with Lena Bertone. Mondays, 6:00-8:00. Four weeks, starting July 10. We will read a variety of flash fiction and talk about the constraints and possibilities within the genre. A large portion of each class will be spent generating writing from prompts and sharing work to gauge the reader s response. The Writer s Life IV: Intermediate Workshopping with Chris DelGuercio. Tuesdays, 6:30-8:30. Six weeks, starting July 11. You ve begun that manuscript, and shared it with peers...but still there s work to do. How do you take your fiction to a polished, professional level? This class focused on workshopping will help make you a more confident editor of your work. The Narrative Voice with Kayla Blatchley. Wednesdays, 6:00-8:00. Four weeks, starting July 12. To further refine voice in our own work, through course readings and discussion, we will investigate how published authors use voice to propel story. Using our own work samples, students will discover how our narrative voices sound on the page, and how to use voice to our advantage. Boot Camp Light with Megan Davidson. Thursdays, 6:00 8:00. Four weeks, starting July 13. Whether you want to write short stories or a novel, here s your chance to work on your fiction masterpiece, and receive helpful feedback to make your prose shine. This class offers friendly support for anyone who d love to see their writing project grow and improve. POETRY Poetry Round Table with Karl Parker. Wednesdays, 3:00 5:00. Six weeks, starting July 12. A workshop for poets who are looking for constructive feedback on works in progress or accountability to generate new work in a supportive environment. Positive beta-testing of poems is the heart of this peer critique experience. Prose Poetry Workshop with Nancy Avery Dafoe. Mondays, 2:00-4:00. Four weeks, starting July 10. A paradoxical genre, the prose poem defies distinctions even as it attempts to suggest some type of boundary. In this writing workshop we will explore and create, read and write within the nonconfines of the prose poem. Image Making and Wonder with Devon Moore. Wednesdays, 6:00-8:00. Four weeks, starting July 12. We ll take on the wonder-making possibilities of deeply observing and describing an object, person, or scene, in concrete, yet increasingly unfamiliar ways. Prompts will inspire us to produce surprising poems of our own, using art books and magazines as material for imagistic exploration. Radical Expansion, Radical Cutting with Tim McCoy. Mondays, 6:00-8:00. Three weeks, starting August 7. How can you get more originality in your work? We will examine strategies for making your poems newly strange. Get wild with expansive free-writes, and then even wilder with contractive cutting. See the juxtapositions that result, then cut further for music you ve never heard from yourself. From Poet s Pen to Printed Page with Georgia Popoff. Tuesdays, 6:00 7:30, 3 weeks starting August 1st. A poem without a reader is at a loss so how do we get published? This class will examine preparing work for publication, sending it out the door, and tracking the progress. We will discuss identifying print journals and online publications that are seeking new voices, legitimate contests, and standard protocols for poets looking for homes for their work. NONFICTION The Summer Flow Continues with Georgia Popoff. Thursdays, 1:30 3:30. Six weeks, starting July 13. A popular nonfiction course for those who rely upon the workshop environment to keep moving forward. With group discussion of elements of prose writing and weekly peer critique, this is for those working on sustained projects, as well as for writers looking for a jump start. What About Our Writes? with Nancy Keefe Rhodes. Thursdays, 6:00-8:00. 3 weeks, starting July 13. Our elected representatives tell us that citizen communications carry far greater weight if people take the time to describe their concerns in their own words. Although preprinted postcards, petitions, and scripts are popular, honing our skills to say what we mean instead of resorting to slogans may take us further and even make us better readers/listeners ourselves. We ll consider various public letters, social media messaging, and what to say if you get the mic. (more courses on the next page!)

3 MORE NONFICTION COURSES Writing About the Movies with Nancy Keefe Rhodes. Thursdays, 6:00-8:00. 4 weeks, starting August 3. For people who love all kinds of movies and want to write about them, this is a 3-week workshop held over four consecutive weeks. Participants agree to take a field trip on August 3rd to the Everson Museum for an outside screening of The Matrix. The following week, class will resume to work with a noted area film/media critic to capture our own responses and insights as reviewers to share and possibly publish. OTHER SUMMER COURSES Summer Songwriting Circle with Jane Zell. Mondays, 6:00 8:00. Four weeks starting July 10. For intermediate/advanced songwriters. The summer version of our popular songwriting workshop, this class offers participants prompts to spark new compositions, examines song-writing craft guidelines, and gentle, supportive in-class critiques assist in developing several new pieces in a short span of time. From Page to Stage: A Workshop in Adaptation with Peter Moller. Wednesdays, 6:00-8:00. Four weeks starting July 12. How do stories on the printed page differ from those performed on stage? We will begin the work of turning one of your favorite short stories or novels into a script for the theater. Writing dialogue and constructing a dramatic scene will keep you busy for three weeks. Writers are expected to come to the first class with a favorite short story or chapter of a novel ready to adapt. FOR TEENS AND TWEENS: THE SUMMER YOUNG AUTHORS ACADEMY Saturdays, 12:00-2:00 Seven weeks starting July 8. For more than 5 years, the YAA has provided an encouraging environment for the talents of students in grades 6-12 who demonstrate a passion for writing. With classes in fiction (middle- and high-school sections), poetry, and digital storytelling, adolescent and teen writers get support from professional writers and media artists in developing their skills and increasing their confidence. For more program information and to download the registration form, visit us online at Questions? Contact our workshops coordinator, Georgia Popoff, at (315) ext. 380, or dwcworkshops@syracuseymca.org.

4 AUGUST OCCASION 2017 TAKE SOME TIME OUT! August 4-5-6, Harding Farm The seventh edition of our writers weekend will feature two days of small-group writing workshops in fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction; readings by faculty and students; and plenty of food, drink and comradery. And we re going back to our home away from home, beautiful Harding Farm in Clinton, NY (not quite an hour east of Syracuse). Join us to recharge your creative spark, build connections with your fellow students and writers, and have a terrific time. This year s Occasion features several terrific writers joining us at the Farm for the first time. About Harding Farm Harding Farm is an historic property located at the base of College Hill in Clinton. We will be using the Carriage House and Cottage buildings and, weather permitting, the extensive and gorgeous grounds. For more information on Harding Farm, visit their website at hardingfarm.com. Accommodations We recommend that retreat participants stay overnight on site, both for convenience and for the social aspect of the retreat. Harding Farm s guest rooms are very comfortable, and by remaining on site, you make it less likely that real world distractions will interrupt your creative experience. A Day Rate is also available, however, for guests who do not wish to stay overnight. Driving Directions Take I-90 to exit 32 (Westmoreland). Turn Right onto Cider St. Turn Left onto Rt After about 5.5 miles, you will reach Harding Farm. You will cross both Rt. 5 and College Hill Road along the way. Harding Farm will be shortly after College Hill Rd., on your right, at 3793 Harding Road. If you reach Rt. 12B, you have gone too far.
