3 Science, Songs, Art and More! Seasonal Song This simple adaptation of the traditional chant will keep youngsters giggling! Have each child cut a beehive shape from construction paper; then help her glue the top of her beehive to another sheet of paper. When the glue is dry, gently lift and fold back the beehive. Provide ink pads and markers for the child to make five fingerprint bees that will be hidden under the hive. Then lower the hive back down on the paper. Teach your little ones the rhyme below and have them dramatize it using their hives. Here is the beehive. Where are the bees? Hiding quietly where nobody sees. Are you sure? Let s peek in the hive. One, two, three, four, five OUCH! Signs Father's Day: Helping Hands Craft This Father s Day, encourage students to help out around the house with a booklet-making idea that makes a nifty gift! Give each child five sheets of unlined paper and have him trace his hand once on each sheet. Instruct him to cut out the tracings, stack them, and then staple the cutouts along one side to make a booklet. After he labels the cover as shown, have him write on each remaining cutout a coupon for a task he could do for his dad or for someone who is a father figure. Send the completed books home knowing that they will make Father s Day extra special!

4 Ladybug Craft When youngsters make this adorable ladybug, you re sure to spot them enjoying themselves! Materials for one ladybug: 9" x 12" green construction paper leaf 1/4 of an apple red tempera paint black tempera paint Steps: Make two red apple prints side by side on the leaf to resemble a ladybug. Allow time for the paint to dry. Use a finger to paint a black line down the middle of the ladybug. Make black fingerprint spots. Make a black fingerprint head. Use a finger to paint six black legs. Alligator Craft These tongue-depressor alligators are sure to make little ones open up and say Aah! Gather the materials listed below and then help each child follow the directions. Use the finished gators as counters, nonstandard units of measurement, or as figures for play. Materials for one alligator: two large craft sticks two 5 green pipe cleaners two 7 mm wiggle eyes uncooked rice craft glue green tempera paint paintbrush Directions: Wrap and twist the pipe cleaner pieces around one of the craft sticks to form legs as shown. Glue the two craft sticks together to form the alligator s body. Spread glue on the top side of the body. Cover the glue with a layer of rice. Then squirt glue along the open edges between the sticks and fill in the gaps with rice. When the glue is dry, paint the whole alligator green, except for the rice between the sticks on one end. (This will represent the alligator s teeth.) When the paint is dry, glue on wiggle eyes. Ring Around the Rosie Ring around the rosie, A pocket full of posies. Ashes, ashes. We all fall down. (fall down with your child) Ring around you (stay on the ground and point to your toddler) Ring around me (point to yourself) We all jump up on the count of three! ONE. TWO. THREE!" (put your fingers up to show 1, 2, and then 3. Finally take your toddler's hands and jump up together)

5 The Very Hairy Caterpillar Materials: 4 cups potting soil 4 tablespoons quicksprouting grass seed Small yogurt container or paper cup Knee-high nylon stocking Directions: Coloured ponytail holders Scissors Plastic bag Bobby pin Googly eyes Pipe cleaner Small pom-poms Combine the potting soil and grass seed in a large bowl. 1. Cut the bottom from a small yogurt container or paper cup for a funnel, then slide a knee-high nylon stocking over it, as shown. 2. Pour or spoon 3/4 to 1 cup of the soil mixture into the stocking, then slide a colourful pony tail holder over the end of the stocking to section off the pocket of soil. Repeat this process to make 5 soil-filled segments. Tie a knot in the top of the stocking and trim any excess nylon. 3. Submerge the caterpillar in water for 10 minutes, then place it in a plastic bag and let it sit overnight. 4. Remove and decorate the caterpillar with google eyes, pipe cleaners etc. 5. Set the caterpillar on a plate by a sunny window and water well every other day. 6. Your critter should sprout hair in about 4-5 days. Sparkly Suncatchers Craft Bring the sunshine indoors!! Materials for one suncatcher: two 7" yellow construction paper circles 10 yellow construction paper triangles 6" circle template 8" waxed paper square gold glitter glue paintbrush scissors Steps: Brush a thin layer of glue onto the waxed paper and sprinkle with gold glitter. Shake off excess glitter. Trace the six-inch circle template onto both yellow construction paper circles. Fold each circle in half; then cut along the tracing. Glue one resulting yellow ring atop the waxed paper. Then trim the excess waxed paper around the circle. Flip the circle and glue the construction paper triangles evenly around it. Then glue on the second yellow ring, sandwiching the triangles inside.

6 Featured Family Childcare Centre Name: Amy Chapman Daycare Name: Safety Bear Daycare Location: Johnson Sub How long have you been operating your daycare? I started my licensed daycare in July I had an unlicensed daycare for 2 years before that. What is your favorite part of running a daycare? Watching the children grow and the joy of seeing them develop new skills. Tell us about a challenge you ve had to overcome when running your daycare? With licensed daycare there is a lot of paperwork that needs to be done, and I have had difficulty completing them. Why did you choose to go into this field? I love working with children. Do you have a favourite activity you would like to share? In the summer time, I take the children to the neighbourhood park to play and have picnics.
