1 June 2016 Dear Students and Families, The students in our Middle School have been working hard all year to grow as readers and writers. Summer is a great time to continue reading and maintain the literacy skills learned throughout the year. Students who read during the summer return to school ready to continue their learning without interruption. Educators identify summer learning loss as a challenge when starting off the new school year. This year we are strongly encouraging students in incoming grades 6, 7, & 8 to read and enjoy a book in addition to the recommended summer reading list. Incoming grade six students will read Wonder by R. J. Palacio. Incoming grade seven students will read Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt. Incoming grade eight students at Coelho and Wamsutta Middle School will read Life as We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer. Incoming grade eight students at Brennan Middle School will read The Giver by Lowis Lowry Each student will receive a copy of the book to borrow for the summer, and we are confident that the students will enjoy reading the title provided. More information about each title can be found at by searching the title chosen for each grade level. We strongly suggest that students read the book this summer, and record ideas about the book as they read and reflect on the events. It is important to keep track of the book, your summer notes, and return them to school in the fall. Students are expected to return the book in September. Any student that does not return the book will be asked to pay $6.00 to cover the cost of the book. There will also be another assignment in September where students will be provided a menu of choices to share their thoughts and ideas about the book. Thank you for your support as we encourage summer reading in the Attleboro Public Schools. Together, we can support our Vision to be the center of a community united around education, where all stakeholders value and participate in our collective success. Sincerely, Dr. Frederick Souza Mr. Andrew Boles Mr. Joseph Connor Brennan Middle School Coelho Middle School Wamsutta Middle School Please sign and return this slip by June 10, 2016 to acknowledge that you have received this letter and the information regarding the summer reading book.
