1 Collegiate School of Memphis 2017 Summer Reading List 10 th Grade Students are to select and carefully read one book from the list below and complete the attached questions about the book. The questions are to be completed and brought with the scholar on the first day of school. This assignment will be a graded. Thorough knowledge of one of the books from this list will be crucial to success in English class in 10th grade. Also, students are to read one book that is the first book in any series of their choice. It should be a series they have never read. Students are to read the series book carefully and come prepared to demonstrate their knowledge of the plot within the first week of school, but they do not have to complete the questions about the series book. Parents: It is recommended that you purchase the books for your student so that they may annotate as well as add to their personal repertoire of novels. All of the novels on this list as well as books in a series are readily available at local book stores or at Amazon.com. WARNING: Any of the following young adult literature may contain mature reading material. Choose one(1) novel from the following: First They Killed My Father by Luong Ung One of seven children of a high-ranking government official, Loung Ung lived a privileged life in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh until the age of five. Then, in April 1975, Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge army stormed into the city, forcing Ung's family to flee and, eventually, to disperse. Harrowing yet hopeful, Loung's powerful story is an unforgettable account of a family shaken and shattered, yet miraculously sustained by courage and love in the face of unspeakable brutality. I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai I Am Malala is the remarkable tale of a family uprooted by global terrorism, of the fight for girls' education, of a father who, himself a school owner, championed and encouraged his daughter to write and attend school, and of brave parents who have a fierce love for their daughter in a society that prizes sons. I Am Malala will make you believe in the power of one person's voice to inspire change in the world. Collegiate Summer Reading List Page 1

2 *In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez It is November 25, 1960, and three beautiful sisters have been found near their wrecked Jeep at the bottom of a 150-foot cliff on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. The official state newspaper reports their deaths as accidental. It does not mention that a fourth sister lives. Nor does it explain that the sisters were among the leading opponents of General Rafael Leonidas Trujillo s dictatorship. It doesn t have to. Everybody knows of Las Mariposas The Butterflies. *The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini "I became what I am today at the age of twelve, on a frigid overcast day in the winter of 1975." So begins this poignant tale of two motherless boys growing up in Kabul, a city teetering on the brink of destruction at the dawn of the Soviet invasion. Despite class differences, the boys are close friends until one betrays the other in increasingly devastating acts of cowardice before finally seeking to make amends. A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah What is war like through the eyes of a child soldier? How does one become a killer? How does one stop? Child soldiers have been profiled by journalists, and novelists have struggled to imagine their lives. But until now, there has not been a first-person account from someone who came through this hell and survived. In A Long Way Gone, Beah, now twenty-five years old, tells a riveting story: how at the age of twelve, he fled attacking rebels and wandered a land rendered unrecognizable by violence. By thirteen, he'd been picked up by the government army, and Beah, at heart a gentle boy, found that he was capable of truly terrible acts. *Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Fifteen-year-old Kambili and her older brother Jaja lead a privileged life in Enugu, Nigeria. They live in a beautiful house, with a caring family, and attend an exclusive missionary school. They're completely shielded from the troubles of the world. Yet, as Kambili reveals in her tendervoiced account, things are less perfect than they appear. *The Things They Carried by Tim O Brien A classic work of American literature that has not stopped changing minds and lives since it burst onto the literary scene, The Things They Carried is a ground-breaking meditation on war, memory, imagination, and the redemptive power of storytelling. The Things They Carried depicts the men of Alpha Company: Jimmy Cross, Henry Dobbins, Rat Kiley, Mitchell Sanders, Norman Bowker, Kiowa, and the character Tim O Brien, who has survived his tour in Vietnam to become a father and writer at the age of forty-three. *Students intending to take AP Literature and Composition in their senior year are strongly encouraged to pick one of these books. Collegiate Summer Reading List Page 2

Rowling The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer Ender s Game by Orson Scott Card The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl The Maze Runner by James Dashner Divergent by Veronica Roth Eve by Ana Carey Uglies by Scott Westerfeld Delirium by Lauren Oliver Perfect Chemistry by Simone Elkeles The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien The Space Trilogy by C. S. Lewis Gone by Michael Grant Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor Matched by Ally Condie Legend by Marie Lu The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares Reboot by Amy Tintera Chaos Walking by Patrick Ness His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman The Hitchhiker s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith Shades of Magic by V. 4 Summer Reading Assignment, 10 th Grade English Directions: Answer the following questions about the book you chose from the summer reading list. (NOT the book from a popular series. This assignment is about the book you chose from the list of 8 novels at the top of the summer reading list.) You may write your answers neatly on notebook paper or you may type and print them out. Your answers must come from your brain and the book itself. Material taken from online summaries is considered plagiarism and will receive zero credit. Topic Questions / Reflection Prompts Characterization 1. Choose two characters. a. Describe traits of both characters (physical, emotional, etc.) b. Explain how they are either like each other or unlike each other. c. Support your answers with quotes and/or specific examples from the text, at least two per character. (Give a page number for EACH quote/example.) 2. Choose a character from the novel and write a series of ten tweets from their perspective. Make sure they are in chronological order, some from the beginning, middle, and end of the book. Setting Point of View Conflict Plot Theme 3. Would you want to live in the setting of this novel? Why or why not? 4. If you could change the narrator, who would you want to be telling the story? Why? How would that affect the story? 5. Rewrite one scene/chapter of the novel from the antagonist s perspective. (This will likely take several paragraphs.) 6. Write about one problem or conflict the protagonist faces in your novel, then say how you would solve that conflict if you were in their place. 7. Write a note to the protagonist of your novel giving them advice about a conflict they are facing. 8. What part of the climax did you find most memorable, either because you enjoyed it or were bothered by it? 9. How would you rewrite the ending of the novel if you could? Why? 10. What was the most suspenseful part of the book for you? Why? At that moment, what did you think would happen? Did your prediction come true? 11. What is your favorite quote from the novel? Why does it mean so much to you? 12. Tell about a time in your life when you learned the same lesson as the protagonist. Compare/Contrast your situations. Collegiate Summer Reading List Page 4

5 Vocabulary 13. Identify five words that you needed to look up in a dictionary in order to understand a sentence fully. For each word: define the word, write the sentence from the book where you found the word, and give the page number. Collegiate Summer Reading List Page 5
