7 SERIES EDITOR'S FOREWORD T he New Middle Ages contributes to lively transdisciplinary conversations in medieval cultural studies through its scholarly monographs and essay collections. This series provides focused research in a contemporary idiom about specific but diverse practices, expressions, and ideologies in the Middle Ages; it aims especially to recuperate the histories of medieval women. Representing Rape in Medieval and Early Modern Literature, a focused collection of essays edited by Elizabeth Robertson and Christine M. Rose, is the twentieth volume in this series. Few subjects cut as close to the bone as this, the topic of rape. The scholars who have collaborated in this project have culled their sources to show how the representation of rape fuels Medieval and Early Modern literary culture. Woman is both the primary subject and object of rape, yet rape is insidiously woven into the body of art that looks to women as patrons and audiences. The essays in this volume face this conundrum squarely, seeing rape not only as a trope from which we can attain comfortable distance but also as a fact that remains uncomfortably up-close and personal. Bonnie Wheeler Southern Methodist University
8 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS T his volume has emerged after a series of panels that we organized on the subject of rape in the early periods. We are grateful therefore to the other members of that first Modern Language Association panel on "Chaucer and Rape," Carolyn Dinshaw, Harriet Spiegel, Gail Berkeley Sherman, and Linda Lomperis, for providing the foundational moment for this volume through their collegial conversations about rape, their wonderful papers, and their responses to this volume. Thanks also to the presenters and enthusiastic audience of the "Rape in Medieval Literature" panel at the 27th International Congress on Medieval Studies, Kalamazoo, 1 992, especially Kathryn Gravdal and Pamela Benson for helping us to broaden and focus our discussion, and to our students, for often hearing us out on this topic. We are indebted to Karen Robertson for her perspicacious advice in the formulation of this introduction. We are grateful to Colleen Anderson tor her editorial assistance on this volume. Without the continual generous and astute advice of Jerome Singerman this volume would never have coalesced. And a final thanks to our husbands, Jeffrey Robinson and John Coldewey, for their support of our endeavor in every way. This volume is dedicated to our fathers, but it is for our mothers, our daughters, and all of our sisters.
