4 1. SYNOPSIS This unusual story is set against the background of a fictitious overseas deployment of the German Army in Eastern Congo. War and civil conflict have been simmering for years, frequently erupting into open conflict although this has been largely ignored by the international media. Lieutenant Nicole Nicki Ziegler, an investigator with the military police, has been sent to Bukavu in the Eastern Congo, where an elite squad of the German Army is supporting the blue helmets of the United Nations forces as part of a EUDOR mission. Together with her dashing colleague Werner Malinckrodt, she has the task of investigating the suicide of Rene Wenz, a German soldier who apparently shot himself in the bar at base. At first all indications point to suicide. Wenz was unable to come to terms with the devastating conditions in this crisis region of sub-sahara Africa and it also appears that his wife was about to leave him. But when Nicki finds an obscure video on the dead man s mobile phone that casts a completely different light on his death, she begins to suspect that she is investigating a murder, not suicide. 4

5 1. SYNOPSIS Captain Kosak becomes increasingly annoyed with this energetic young woman, who is causing more and more disruption in the unit. Even young soldiers like Sergeant Marco and his friend Philipp, both friends of the dead man, are puzzled. However, Kosak is ordered by Colonel Lonsky, commander of the squad, to support the investigation in every possible way. Lonsky sees a great deal of himself in the committed, idealistic Nicki. Together with Werner and their interpreter Noelle, they gradually uncover evidence of a devastating crime in this gruesome war, a conflict in which all sides appear to be terrorizing the other. The German soldiers are able to do little to protect the tormented civilians against the dreaded Captain Crocodile and his child soldiers. Nicki first has to learn the rules according to which this war is being acted out, but before long she finds herself in mortal danger 5
