Psychoanalysis of Spider- Man Cory Raposa
Introducing Spider- Man The story of Spider- Man begins with a teenage boy named Peter Parker who lived a semi- normal life with his aunt and uncle in New York City. Peter s life was dramadcally changed when a genedcally mutated spider that passed its venom into Peter s blood stream bit him. Peter did not know what was going on at the Dme but when he woke up he had a build body, super senses, could jump farther and higher than anyone known, and a lot more. He gained super powers from this spider that had bihen him that made him spider- like. Peter started using his powers to gain ahendon and money when he first started out. Then one day a convict tragically killed his uncle and that changed peter even more than the super powers had. This incident gave peter the fuel and drive he needed to use his powers for good and to protect people from cooks and villains like the one that had killed his uncle.
Freudian Theory Spider- Man s Unconsciousness- Freud says that the unconscious is the part of the mind that is constructed by repression of that which is too painful to remain in consciousness. When taking a look into Peter/Spidey, you see that his life has been filled with confusion of what had happened to his parents; why did he live with his aunt and uncle. Also the death of his father figure, Uncle Ben, had taken one of the biggest impacts on Peter s psyche. Uncle Ben s death is something that set Peter off to become Spider- Man and want to risk his life to fight off evil. He felt deep inside his mind that if he didn t fight for innocent people than he was lerng his late uncle down in a way.
Regression and Repression- When Peter s Uncle Ben had died of murder, a sudden urge of rage came over Peter and he used his powers to murder the man that had just killed his uncle. When Peter decides to do this he is regressing his mind into a state that is not very adult like but revengeful like a child. It took Peter only seconds aser he commihed the crime that he his regression came into his consciousness and he immediately felt guilty for what he had just done. This picture shows what Peter Parker s mind might look like aser he got done doing something he regrehed doing. Shows him in a depressing mood with his mask off wondering if Spider- Man and his decision was a right one.
Peter Parker s Oedipus Complex is a lihle bit different than most. Peter Parker never knew his mother because she was killed when he was a very young child. The complex points towards a man s ahracdon to his mother and wandng a sexual reladonship with a woman who is his mother or just like her in every way. Peter never knew her so he goes through several girls trying to figure out which one he likes best. There are certain girls that stand out more than others that he may be reladng to his aunt May who raised him instead of his own mother. The Picture to the right shows some of Peter Parker/Spider- Man s love interests throughout his comic life. He switches from one to the other frequently to somehow find his right match to be with for the rest of his life, but he has no one to compare them to see if they re the right girl.
Spider- Man s Ego, Id, and Super- Ego- The id is inside of the unconscious of the mind and is the pleasure principle. Spider- Mans id is fueled by his sexual energy. His sexual needs seem to come first when thinking of being Spider- Man. He lets his women decide if he is going to condnue to be Spider- Man forever or be their man and give up the hero side of his life. His ego is the part of him that is shown to the endre world. The ego part of this man is Peter Parker himself. This is what the world see. A man in school, working for local newspaper, girlfriend, etc. He is a simple man. The best part of Peter Parker is his super- ego. This is Spider- Man; the part of him that is the hero. Spider- Man sets out and risks his life to save people from villains and evil doers. His goals are to use his powers for good and not evil and to stop anything that gets in his way.
There are Dmes when Peter Parker has dreams about being evil and using his powers for evil instead of for good like he does as Spider- Man. There were moments when he actually acted upon these thoughts and always went right back to being good. What do his dreams mean? There is a part of Parker s mind that wants the fame and riches and knows he could gain it all with his powers. His dreams are showing his unconscious thoughts that he will never really do.
Lacanian Analysis of Spider- Man The Lacanian Mirror stage- Lacan says this is the first Dme a person has a true idendty crisis because it s the first Dme between the age of 3 and 18 months that an infant sees it s reflecdon and realizes that it is itself in the reflecdon. When thinking of Spider- Man s mirror stage, his is not when he is an infant as Peter Parker but his stardng off as Spider- Man as a hero. He may put the costume on and go fight crime, but it isn t undl he may look in the mirror or see his reflecdon somewhere that he may realize that this isn t just a dream, it s real. He really is a hero and could die trying to save these random people he doesn t even know. He may look in the mirror and contemplate whether being a hero is his true idendty or is it Peter Parker.
The imaginary- the imaginary is the basis to Freud s ego. Ego is formed by idendfying with a counterpart which connects with the image seen in the mirror stage. In this case Peter Parker sees Spider- Man in his mirror stage and sets a tone for how Spider- Man acts when he is in fact being Spidey. The Symbolic- Symbolic is changed that produce imaginary effects because the imaginary is structured by the Symbolic and its concepts are death and the pleasure principle. Spider- Mans Symbolic is his Spidey senses that go off when danger is around. He is alerted by weird feelings that alert him when danger is around. His body is telling him that he needs to get out of whatever situadon he is in because his life is in danger. The Real- this is what is authendc and unchangeable truth in reference to ones self. The real is always in its place even when something in the Symbolic is missing. Spider- Man is not able to change who he is. He was bihen for a reason and is stuck with his powers for the rest of his life. He can not deny that he has these powers and must use them for good no maher how many Dmes he tries to give up being a hero. Spider- man is Peter Parker.
Spider- Man s other- the other is a reflecdon and protecdon of and ego. The other is the counterpart of the specific image. Spider- Man has an other that is a counterpart of the Spider- Man that is goodness. It s name is venom. It is the exact same as Spider- Man but has a dark soul and concentrates on evil instead of good. Peter Parker accidentally gets the Venom power and feels beher about his powers. Spider- Man eventually looses the venom power and comes back to touch with his good side and Spider- Man is back to his old self.
