This time we had a good size away team including, David and Maria, Rose along with her father, Art and Jim Miller of whom we don't see enough. This year's con had some really great costumes and some very interesting guests. This year's winner of the costume contest was won by a girl dressed as the Lionfish, named Livingston that was in Picard's ready room. There were a lot of other people, that spent a lot of time and effort making their costume, but it looked like everyone thought her idea for a costume was a sure winner. I guess it's what they called the Wow Factor. It is funny when I first saw her at the convention it didn't even occur to me she was even wearing a costume (see photo in the April issue). Other people were dressed as the Borg and as Klingons and they all did an outstanding job in putting together their outfits. Some of the guests were very entertaining and apparently did a lot of preparation for their performance on stage. Suzie Plakson who played a Klingon on many episodes was a joy to watch as was Anthony Montgomery who was a very dynamic speaker. Too bad Anthony didn't have a much bigger role on ENT. I have to say one person who was a major disappointment on stage was Terry Ferrell. She's been out of show business for the past 10 years and it was apparent. However, she was very warm and quite beautiful when I had my photo op taken with her. She just didn't really have much to say about DS9 though. By far, I think Kate Mulgrew was the biggest star there and rightly so. It was exciting to watch and listen to her. Last year I had my photo op with her, so I skipped it this year. I met Robert Picardo at many conventions prior to this one, but he seems to get better as time goes on, or I'm just noticing how great he really is. Robert Beltran, who played Commander Chakotay on VOY was also very entertaining and funny. I didn't know he was so humorous. Also, James Darren who played Vic on DS9 was there as well. I spoke with him and told him how much I liked him in the show TIME TUNNEL. He remembered that show very well of course. Next to the Shore Leave convention this is one of the better Sci-Fi conventions and it's not really that far either. I understand they plan to skip next year and have a great celebration in 2016, STAR TREK s 50 th anniversary. We'll have to wait to see what happens then. In any case, do try to make the next ST con in New Jersey. 4 April Meetup Animated Discussions About The Small Screen and The Silver Screen By CMDR Maria Fricke We had eight in attendance at the Versailles Diner on Tuesday, April 22 nd, with Bill returning for his second time. As usual there were many conversations and some of them were at the same time. We spoke about some actors who have shown up in other projects. John Wesley Shipp who played Barry Allen in the TV series THE FLASH and that he was attending the Chiller Con in NJ at the end of April. David and I saw him on Broadway in DANCING AT LUGHNASA in The CW is spinning off a new FLASH series from ARROW, they have already introduced Barry Allen and in a later episode he had his lab accident. It is rumored that Shipp will be playing Jay Garrick (the Golden Age Flash) in the new series. We mentioned that J. G. Hertzler who played General Martok (and other characters in several ST series) was elected to a seat on the town council of Ulysses, NY last November. It is a good day to be elected. He recently appeared at the Creation STAR TREK Convention in Cherry Hill. Michael Dorn has been proposing a TV series about Captain Worf; though there have not been any updates since October. David and I had recently watched THE TEN COMMANDMENTS on TV and there was a slave master that had a distinctive voice. It was Michael Ansara who played Kang in TOS, DS9 and VOY. We found out that he was un-credited in the film after checking imdb.com. Also, in the same film, the actress who played Pharaoh s daughter (who finds the baby Moses) was Nina Foch, who some may remember as having played Ducky's mom on NCIS. We then mentioned some TV series and films. GAME OF THRONES is popular, though as I explained, David and I have too many things we already watch that we just couldn't add anything else. I mentioned the four part series on BBC America, THE REAL HISTORY OF SCIENCE FICTION. It is interesting, especially seeing a young Isaac Asimov talking about robotics. Three episodes have been shown, however the last one will be shown later this year. COSMOS: A SPACE TIME ODYSSEY is currently airing on the FOX channel and the National Geographic cable station; it is a sequel to Dr. Carl Sagan's COSMOS (shown on PBS in 1980). It is hosted by Dr. Neil degrasse Tyson and one of the executive producers is Ann Druyan (Carl Sagan's widow). A few mentioned that they saw CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER and we said that it is important to stay until the very, very end of the credits. Mike was chosen to receive four free tickets to the event from Meetup.com due to his relationship with the STAR TREK Meetup on the website.

The only caveat to getting the tickets was that I had to pose with a poster of the event plus the ticket, and this photo could then be used by Meetup.

5 USS JUSTICE Free-For-All Going To Two Free Events In April/May By CMDR Rose Marie Caratozzolo SHATNER S WORLD, a one-man-show from William Shatner is a two-hour journey through Shatner s life and career from Shakespearean stage actor to international icon. Via video clips, musical selections and his own unique style of storytelling he takes the audience on a voyage through his extensive body of work in television and film. Fathom Events, along with Priceline.com, held a special presentation of SHATNER S WORLD in local AMC theaters as a one-night event on Thursday, April 24 th. Mike was chosen to receive four free tickets to the event from Meetup.com due to his relationship with the STAR TREK Meetup on the website. He presented the tickets at our monthly meeting in April and I was lucky enough to get two tickets. The only caveat to getting the tickets was that I had to pose with a poster of the event plus the ticket, and this photo could then be used by Meetup.com in its in-house promotions (see photo at right). The remaining two passes were given out at the next STAR TREK meetup dinner. Prior to starting there was some on-screen William Shatner trivia and an exclusive welcome message from the man himself introducing the show. The show itself was highly entertaining and provided some unknown (to me) background information regarding his early years on stage and film. He touched on his time with STAR TREK only briefly, along with his Emmy winning stint on BOSTON LEGAL, his time on Broadway and his music albums. He didn t go into great depth regarding his personal life, only making slight references to his children, divorces, the death of his third wife and how he met his current, and fourth, wife and of course, he also mentioned his great love of horses, especially Saddlebreds. Some of his stories sounded familiar, similar to ones told at Shore Leave last year, but overall it was a very funny and entertaining show. Throughout it all you get the sense that he knows that he is as, if not more, famous for being himself, than he is for his impressive body of work. Free Comic Book Day is a day held the first Saturday in May every year since starting in It is celebrated in local independent specialty and comic book shops in order to promote comics and to garner new business for the establishments. I had known about this day for a few years but had never participated until this year. On a recommendation from David and Maria I went to The Joker s Child in Fair Lawn. I arrived around noon and the line was wrapped around the building into the parking lot. It moved fairly quickly and after about 40 minutes I was let into the store. Maria and David joined me in the store soon after. While I had stopped reading comics consistently a long time ago, I had looked through my The Line Photo by CMDR Rose Marie Caratozzolo collection and made a list of a few comics I was missing. Unfortunately, none of them were to be found in the store. I did purchase some DEADPOOL comics, since he is my favorite David & free comics Photo by CMDR Maria Fricke character. After my purchase I was allowed to choose between adult or kid themed packets of free comics. I choose the adult-themed group which contained the following: THE TICK; TRANSFORMERS VS. G.I. JOE #0; ROCKET RACCOON #1; RISE OF THE MAGI #0; GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY; THE NEW 52 FUTURES END #0; PANDORA S BLOGS #0/DUEL IDENTITY #0; TESLA #0/WAYWARD SONS #0; MAGIKA #0/THE FIRST DAUGHTER #0 and SHADOW CHILDREN #0/DARCHON #0. Once we were done at the shop, Maria, David and I stopped at Dunkin Donuts for a quick bite to eat (where I won some free hash browns!) then headed out to Microcenter in Paterson to meet up with Lou and Mike to look at computers. We are all in the market for new PCs and Lou provided some great (and free!) advice on what to look for. All in all, both events were fun, but the best thing about them both was that they were FREE because who doesn t love some free stuff! 5

He is introduced in the middle of an adventure with no explanation and a mysterious past. This is not a reboot but a continuation of the classic series.

6 SecondSeat Report E Unus Pluribum: A Report On Regeneration In DOCTOR WHO, Part 4 By CAPT David Fricke All photos from wikipedia.org On March 26, 2005 DOCTOR WHO returned to the airways. This was a result of collaboration between BBC Worldwide and BBC Wales. Filming was to take place at BBC Wales Studios in Cardiff and several episodes were set in Wales. The new series did not start with a regeneration scene! The Ninth Doctor, Christopher Eccleston, meets Rose Tyler, Billy Piper and says Run!, good advice when attacked by aliens. Before the story is over, Rose will prove her worth by saving the Doctor s life. Eccleston s Doctor is in some ways a return to the First Doctor. He is introduced in the middle of an adventure with no explanation and a mysterious past. This is not a reboot but a continuation of the classic series. Even though the fans are aware of decades of background, much has happened since last we saw the Doctor. He mentions the Last Great Time War which ended with the destruction of the Daleks and all of the Time Lords, except the Doctor. It is hinted that it was the Doctor himself that brought about this genocide that ended the war. This Doctor is continually haunted by his survivor s guilt, although he usually tries to put on a face of frivolity and devil-may-care. The first TARDIS trip this Doctor takes Rose on is to a party in the far future to witness the destruction of the Earth as the sun goes nova. For reasons that are still being debated Christopher Eccleston decided to do only one season as the Doctor. The season ended with the appropriately titled The Parting of the Ways. For his final adventure the Doctor and Rose are abducted to Satellite Five, a space station orbiting Earth in the future. The Doctor finds that the Emperor Dalek survived the time war and has created a huge Dalek fleet. They intend to kill most of the people of Earth and to convert the rest into Daleks. When the Doctor uncovers their scheme the Daleks launch a massive attack on Earth. The Doctor comes up with a way to destroy all of the Daleks but it will also destroy everyone on Earth and Satellite Five. The Doctor tricks Rose into going into the TARDIS and activating an emergency program that will take the TARDIS on a one way trip back to Rose s home time period. Once there Rose successfully forces open the TARDIS console and the full power of the time vortex pours into Rose. Back on Satellite Five the Doctor has completed the device just as the Daleks break through the last of the defenses killing several people. The Emperor Dalek asks the Doctor if he will choose to be a murderer or a coward, the Doctor refuses to use his device and says he will take the way of the coward. Just as all seems lost the TARDIS appears and Rose steps out glowing with the power of the time vortex and with a wave of her hand she disintegrates all of the Daleks. Knowing that no human body can long withstand the power of the time vortex, the Doctor takes the energy from Rose s body into his own. The Doctor and Rose enter the TARDIS for the return journey to Rose s home time period. During the journey the time energy overwhelms the Doctor s body and he regenerates into the Tenth Doctor, David Tennant. The Tenth Doctor s relationship with Rose would form the basis for much of the reign of Tennant s Doctor. Ultimately, Rose and her widowed mother get their happy endings in an alternate universe in which Rose had never been born and her mother s counterpart had died. The analogue of Rose s father marries Rose s mother and Rose lives with a human version of the Tenth Doctor. Tennant s Doctor would see the return of the Cybermen, UNIT (Unified Intelligence Taskforce) and the Master; the introduction of the Weeping Angels and the mysterious time traveler River Song, whose meetings with the Doctor occur in reverse order (his first encounter with her is her last one with him). When this Doctor s time is up, after a final farewell tour of all of his companions, he explodes in a burst of regeneration energy that nearly destroys the TARDIS. 6

7 The Doctor regenerates into the Eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith. The TARDIS crash lands in the front yard of a little red haired girl, Amelia Pond (Caitlin Blackwood). He promises to take her on a trip in the TARDIS after a short trip to stabilize the new repairs. After the short trip he returns to the house but cannot find the little girl. Instead he is handcuffed by a young policewoman named Amy (Karen Gillan). It turns out that the policewoman is Amelia; the Doctor came back 12 years late. The policewoman uniform is a costume that she wears when working as a Kiss-A-Gram. Initially the story arcs revolve around Amy, her fiancé (later husband) Rory (Arthur Darvill) and their child Melody Pond who was conceived in the TARDIS. Later seasons would revolve around the theme of the death of the Doctor; first as a future event witnessed by Amy, Rory and River Song at a fixed (unchangeable) point in time. After this is eventually resolved the Doctor is forced to visit the one place no time traveler should go, his own grave. In his last episode the Eleventh Doctor fights his last battle for over 100 years because he knows he has already used his last regeneration. A last minute intervention from the Doctor s home planet Gallifrey grants the Doctor more regenerations so that he can regenerate into the Twelfth Doctor, Peter Capaldi, whose episodes are in production.
