1 Summer Reading Reflective Journal Directions: Please fill out this chart as you read your novel. This must be in your own handwriting and must come from your own understanding of the novel, not from the internet. Please do not consult any outside sources, including your classmates. There are 12 entries to fill out for your novel. Four entries must analyze a quotation, four of the entries must be a chapter(s) summary and four of the entries must be a discussion of a literary device...see examples below. There are also many allusions that authors will use. You are not limited to any of these choices and should individualize this to the piece you are reading. Write about what you see.

3 10th Grade- Salt to the Sea, by Ruta Sepetys By M. T. Anderson Feb. 12, 2016 A group of teenage refugees meet on the road in the chaotic countryside of East Prussia in winter The Nazi Reich is collapsing all around them, and they, like hundreds of thousands, are fleeing the wrathful Soviet advance. They are trapped between their German conquerors and their terrifying Russian liberators. Their story is told through the voices of Joana, a pretty Lithuanian nurse; Florian, a Prussian with a mysterious letter of passage from a high-ranking Nazi officer; and Emilia, an idealistic but damaged Polish girl in a pink knit cap. Thrown together, struggling to survive, they at first hardly trust one another enough even to exchange names, and so they often just use epithets: the knight, the nurse, the Polish girl, the wandering boy, the shoe poet. (The last, an old cobbler, gets his name from his philosophy: The shoes always tell the story. ) Each has secrets the galling histories that haunt anyone who has lived through war, flight and deprivation.

4 11th Grade Review: In Hillbilly Elegy, a Tough Love Analysis of the Poor Who Back Trump By Jennifer Senior Aug. 10, 2016 In late July, The American Conservative ran an interview with J. D. Vance that drew so much traffic it briefly crippled the central nervous system of the magazine s website. The interviewer s last line implored readers to have a look at Mr. Vance s publishing debut, Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis. Ever since, his book has hovered at high altitude on Amazon, seldom dipping below No. 10. On the checklist of modern privilege, Mr. Vance, 31, has the top four in the bag: He is white, male, straight and Protestant. But his profile is misleading. His people hillbillies, rednecks, white trash, choose your epithet (or term of affection, depending on your point of view) didn t step off the Mayflower and become part of America s ascendant class. Poverty is the family tradition, he writes. His ancestors and kin were sharecroppers, coal miners, machinists, millworkers all low-paying, body-wearying occupations that over the years have vanished or offered diminished security. Hillbilly Elegy, in my mind, divides into two components: the family stories Mr. Vance tells most of which are no doubt better experienced on the page than they were in real life and the questions he raises. Chief among them: How much should he hold his hillbilly kin responsible for their own misfortunes?
