I couldn't help but flip through this book first to enjoy the beautiful photography, maps and graphics that help detail out the research and stories that are told in Exploring English Castles, but the real star of this book is the research and writing style of the author. Dr. Edd Morris' love of castles and the interesting history behind them comes through in how he presents his research. Anything but dry and boring (as many historically-related books can be) this book brings history alive with a writing style that is engaging, informative, and entertaining. His writing style is beautiful to read, and I loved the relatable way he presents scholarly facts. It really drew me in and got me caught up in the historical stories of each castle and of the explanations of the times and factors that came into play when these castles were built and lived in, and in what has happened to many of them throughout the centuries. I'm a lover of all things English, and loved reading about the nine castles featured in this book. To give you an idea of Dr. Morris' writing style, here is an excerpt that talks about the purely decorative chimney posts of Framlingham Castle: "[T]heir purpose was to keep up appearances. The red-brick chimneys were a mid-1500s confection, built on top of the thirteen towers as an ostentatious display of Tudor wealth. Nowadays, of course, a chimney isn't quite a status symbol-- but, back in the early 1500s, most homes had little more than a hole in the ceiling through which smoke could escape. (If this sounds surprisingly primitive, it bears saying that in medieval times, the concept of a fireplace and flue hadn't been invented- meaning that stale smoke would have just swirled through the rooms at a residence.)" If you have an interest in castles, you will love this book. It brings them alive! It isn't *just* a pretty "coffee table book." While guests will be intrigued to look through this book if you leave it out for others to enjoy, the real pleasure is in digging in to the stories and learning more about these amazing places. I wish this book would have been published before my family and I had traveled to England two years ago. It would have made our explorations even more interesting! Exploring English Castles by Dr. Edd Morris is a fantastic book that just calls out for you to pick it up and thumb through it. It is a beautiful combination of gorgeous photographs and fascinating history. I spent time in England and Wales as a child and revisited as an adult several years ago and have actually visited several of the castles covered in this book. So it was with great anticipation that I waited for its arrival. It was certainly worth the wait! The book is a wonderful history refresher and Dr. Morris has an engaging way of writing. By merging historical fact with historical trivia and every day references, he brings history alive and evokes such a sense of place and vibrancy for each of these castles.
