3 INNOVATION DAYS AT THE FACULTY OF ECONOMIC SCIENCES AND BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION In the month of June, Junior Achievement Romania joined forces with the Faculty of Economic Sciences SOLUTIONS FOR THE and Business Administration to DEVELOPMENT OF o rga n i ze a p i l o t e d i t i o n o f t h e ENTREPRENEURIAL APPROACHES Innovation Days event at the Research and Development Institute of Transilvania University of Braşov. In a relaxed, casual setting, the undergraduate students and their professors identified and debated on feasible solutions for the development of entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial approaches, and established measures to implement and capitalize on their own resources. Dr Ioana Chiţu CHAMBER JAZZ@UNIVERSITATEA TRANSILVANIA ALEX HARDING &LUCIAN BAN SOMETHIN' HOLY On 23 June, at the close of the first season of the Chamber Jazz at Transilvania University series, Somethin' Holy marked the reunion of saxophone player Alex Harding and pianist and composer Lucian Ban, 16 years after the release of the album with the same title and following a great number of joint musical projects. One of the most important baritone saxophone players in contemporary jazz, Alex Harding has played with Lucian Ban for almost two decades, since the latter moved to New York at the end of the 90s; this repeated exercise of appearing together, along with an obvious complementarity between Harding's intense and emotional performance and Ban's elegant and tempered style seem to have allowed them to achieve a level of synergy that is as important in any duo as it is rare in jazz shows. Beyond the manifest enthusiasm that the music of Alex Harding and Lucian Ban was greeted with by the local audience, the concert was a great example of what made this first year of Chamber Jazz at Transilvania University so special: privileged encounters with important names in contemporary jazz, musicians willing to engage with the public and committed to offering them a warm and often intimate performance and, mostly, the thrill of sharing a memorable experience. Maria Ghiurțu THE NATIONAL OLYMPIAD OF BUSINESS STUDENTS Between 28 and 30 June, the Faculty of UNDERGRADUATE Economics and Public Administration within the University Ştefan cel Mare of Suceava was the venue STUDENTS AT THE for the National Olympiad of Students in Economics. FACULTY OF ECONOMIC Business students representing our university SCIENCES AND BUSINESS won the Grand Prize with the paper Broadening the ADMINISTRATION horizon in product testing by integrating haptic WIN IMPORTANT AWARDS technology and neuromarketing, authored by master's students Florentina Stamate and Andra Tudor (supervisor Dr Alina Tecău) and the Award for applicability, with the paper The multidimensional analysis of online shops in Romania, by Raluca Roxana Luca and nd Andreea Ioana Prescoviță, 2 year undergraduate students at Economic Informatics (supervisor Dr Radu Lixăndroiu). The papers were based on research performed at the Research and Development Institute of Transilvania University of Braşov. Dr Ioana Chiţu

4 MEETING WITH NOVELIST MARIUS OPREA On 23 June, St. O. Iosif Book Store hosted the launch of the second novel by Marius Oprea, Neasemuita istorie a Imperiului Român de Răsărit (The Unparalleled History of the East Romanian Empire). The book was introduced by Dr Adrian Lăcătuş, Dean of the Faculty of Letters and by Dr Dan Ţăranu. Adrian Lăcătuş highlighted the originality of the author, whose novels are very different in style from the books of history or poetry known to the public: the stylistic and narrative EVENINGS touches are added in all the right places this comes with extensive literary practice under AT THE FACULTY OF LETTERS the influence of writer Alexandru Muşina. Adrian Lăcătuş added that both of Oprea's novels, Turma păstorului mut (The Herd of the Silent Shepherd) and Neasemuita istorie a Imperiului Român de Răsărit (The Unparalleled History of the East Romanian Empire) testify to the work of a very interesting writer with a rich and intense prose unfolding in his stories and in the worlds he writes about. Dan Ţăranu referred to the two types of writing we meet in the novelist's latest work: a spiritual biography, a quest of self-discovery with mystical accents (...) and in contrast with this biographical, spiritual dimension, there is this utopian postbiography in which Marius Oprea becomes the emperor of the Romanian Empire. According to Dan Țăranu, this is a type of virtual history, similar to those created by Robert Cowley or Neil Ferguson. The launch concluded with a Q&A session during which the public interacted with the author, followed by a book signing session. Iuliana Gabriela Răducan, doctoral student DR. ENG. JOHN SMINTINA John Smintina graduated the Faculty of Silviculture and Forest Engineering within Transilvania University of Brașov in Up until 1995 he worked as a researcher with Gheorghe Ionescu-Şişeşti Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences in Bucharest, developing several models of analysis in the field of quantitative genetics, publicising his research at international conferences, such as those in Tampere (Finland), Berlin (Germany) or Montpellier (France). 5 MUSICAL READINGS WITH CAROLE ZALBERG AND CLEMENT WALKER-VIRY On 1 June, the French Lectorate, the Multicultural Centre of Transilvania University, and Alliance Française co-organized an event which featured the French author Carole Zalberg and pianist Clement Walker-Viry: Chants d'apocalypse a reading for two voices. Carole Zalberg wrote Chants d'apocalypse - du sombre au clair in 2015, during an artist residency program organized around the word Apocalypse. She chose to SONGS OF APOCALYPSE write poems about refugees and their feelings of being torn apart from their country, and the fact that they are rejected and seen more as a threat than as human beings. Shortly after she met Clement Walker-Viry, a young music composer and pianist with whom she decided to turn her poems into musical reading. Working together for over a year, they presented their work first in Angers (France) last December. Next, they performed in Bordeaux and in Corsica, to finally give their fourth performance at the Multicultural Centre of Transilvania University of Brașov, in front of a French-speaking, Francophile public. The event was introduced by Dr Monica Hârșan, professor of French literature at the Faculty of Letters, who introduced the audience to the works of Carole Zalberg and of Clement Walker-Viry. Dr Adèle Gousset, French lecturer at Transilvania University of Brașov GEORGE ROȘU A STUDY FOR TRAPS AND KEYBOARDS Inspired by a wordplay, since to play can be used either in association with a game, like in to play a game of tennis, or with a musical instrument, as in to play the piano, George Roșu has prepared two series of works for his exhibition at the Multicultural Centre. These text drawings, as the artist calls them, achieve, sometimes within the confines of the same work, the double task of asking serious questions about the dynamics of the contemporary art scene, for example, and of deriding conventional expectations and the solemnity with which we feel compelled to greet what is presented to us as a work of art. Thus, the texts representing the first collection of works, arranged on staves and specifically designed for the classical music festival Vibrate, are often self-referential, in a provocative and irreverent meta-artistic, self-conscious exercise, while the second series contains, as George Roșu himself says, already validated works. The latter bear a close resemblance to captions, offering the synthetic and often demystifying expression of everyday experiences or cultural motifs, clichés and unquestioned practices in the consumption of art. Apparently eclectic and refusing to settle for a stable meaning, George Roşu's exhibition finds its consistency precisely in its constant interest in cultivating paradoxical approaches and in invalidating and then reaffirming its own contents, just to invalidate them again, but also in its ability to propose new ways of delivering a message in contemporary art. TEXT DRAWINGS Maria Ghiurțu PROFESSORS WE TAKE PRIDE IN Professor Aurel Rusu was born on 9 June 1917, in Bărboși village, Mureș County. In 1935 AUREL RUSU, PhD he graduated from Ferdinand High-school of Turda, obtaining his Baccalaureate diploma at Cluj.
