1 PRESS INFORMATION Museum Schloss Moyland Museum Schloss Moyland in the district of Kleve, Bedburg-Hau, is a museum of modern and contemporary art and an international centre for research on Joseph Beuys. The museum s collection is based on the previous private collection of the van der Grinten brothers covering fine and applied art of the 19th and 20th centuries. The largest holdings worldwide of the works of the artist Joseph Beuys form the heart of the collection, which is preserved and presented in the historic castle and garden complex. The Joseph Beuys Archive and museum library are also located here. Special exhibitions of classical and contemporary art and other cultural events from the fields of music, literature, cabaret, etc., as well as an annual herb garden festival and Christmas arts and crafts market, round off the programme. The museum with its variety of exhibitions and events is a cultural attraction. The Museum Schloss Moyland has become a Beuys centre of international significance in view of the shows its mounts and the books it publishes about the work and influence of Joseph Beuys. Historic castle and garden complex The Museum Schloss Moyland complex encompasses historic castle buildings and garden art including an integrated sculpture park. The castle was first mentioned in a document in Rebuilding took place in the Middle Ages and the Baroque era. The current state of the castle and gardens is of late 19th century provenance. The master builder from Cologne, Ernst Friedrich Zwirner, restyled the castle exterior in neo-gothic mode from Until 1945 the castle was used by the von Steengracht family as a permanent residence and was a popular destination for tourists from the Lower Rhine. Nowadays, the grounds encompass a sculpture park and herb garden. The van der Grinten collection The Museum Schloss Moyland holdings are based on the extensive art collection of the van der Grinten brothers, Hans ( ) and Franz Joseph (born 1933). This is one of the most important collections in North Rhine-Westphalia arising from a private initiative. Significant fields of fine and applied art are represented. In addition to examples from international modern art movements, the focus is on work cycles of individual artists,

2 including André Thomkins, Rudolf Schoofs, Erwin Heerich and James Lee Byars. Joseph Beuys Archive The Joseph Beuys Archive is a central feature of the Museum Schloss Moyland Foundation in view of its international significance for research. It is also an institute incorporated in the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Its wideranging archive material and its scientific research remit are focussed on Joseph Beuys s artistic practice and its reception. The comprehensive archive holdings encompass a library, letters, written documents, photographs, press articles, printed material and audio-visual media. Museum library The museum library holds more than items about the fine and applied art of the 19th and 20th centuries. This specialized library is devoted thematiccally to the range covered by the art collection. A further section covers literature on the history of art and culture in the nether Lower Rhine region.

3 Foundation The Foundation partners Three partners founded the Museum Schloss Moyland Foundation on 11 July 1990, with the considerable help of the Minister President of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia at that time, Johannes Rau. Schloss Moyland, which had been in the possession of the von Steengracht family for more than 230 years, was incorporated within the Foundation. The collectors Hans and Franz Joseph van der Grinten donated their art collection, along with archive materials about Joseph Beuys. The state of North Rhine-Westphalia provided the financial support necessary for restoration and guaranteed yearly funds for running the museum. The Museum Schloss Moyland was inaugurated on 24 May The board of trustees The board of trustees of the Museum Schloss Moyland Foundation consists of thirteen members, including Armin Laschet, Minister President of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (president) and Isabel Pfeiffer-Poensgen, Minister for Culture and Science of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (deputy). There are also representatives from the funding bodies, namely, the district of Kleve and the municipality of Bedburg-Hau: the district chief executive Wolfgang Spreen and the mayor Peter Driessen. Other members of the board of trustees are Frank Ruffing, chair of the Förderverein Museum Schloss Moyland e. V. (Friends of the Museum Schloss Moyland); Professor Klaus Schäfer, minister of state retired, Norbert Meesters, Nadia van der Grinten, Rene S. Spiegelberger; Friedrich Freiherr von der Leyen, Kai-Harald Solmitz and Professor Eugen Blume. The executive board Three honorary members named by the founders remain on the board of the Foundation until the age of seventy at a maximum. Franz Rudolf van der Grinten represents the family of the collectors Hans and Franz Joseph van der Grinten; Nicolas Baron von Steengracht represents the castle patrons and Dr. Arnim Brux represents the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is the duty of the executive board to implement the decisions of the board of trustees, together with the management of the museum. The Förderverein (Friends) On 15 December 1987 a non-profit Förderverein Museum Schloss Moyland e. V. (Friends of the Museum Schloss Moyland Association), initiated by Hans and Franz Joseph van der Grinten and Adrian Baron von Steengracht, was joined by prestigious personalities from the political, economic and cultural spheres. The aims of the organisation are the maintenance of the

4 historic castle and its gardens, the preservation and extension of the art collection and the Joseph Beuys Archive, and making the different areas of the museum accessible to a wider public. The Förderverein Museum Schloss Moyland e. V. also participates in the museum s work by helping to fund publications, acquire art works and sponsor special exhibitions.

Parking There is a large, free car park in front of the castle grounds for cars and buses and a separate space for caravans. Parking spaces for people with disabilities are available near to the entrance. Access by public transport From Kleve or Xanten railway station take bus 44 in the direction of Moyland. The bus stops at the castle grounds.
