1 Chapter 1 : Canon of Sherlock Holmes - Wikipedia The third and final in Kel Richards' "Sherlock Holmes' Tales of Terror" series, and perhaps the most disappointing of them all. (Please note: another three stories, probably intended for the series, have been published as 'Footsteps in the Fog'). And that got me thinking, what is it about this type of storytelling that is just so addictive? Keep the lights on for this one. The three of them spent a dull-ass rainy summer together reading ghost stories to each other and finally challenged one another to write something truly terrifying. And Mary was the only one to follow through on it, thank you very much. A feat that combines for a beautiful, heartbreaking, and thought-provoking piece that focuses just as much on the ramifications of our choices as the gore and tension associated with horror. The surface seemed to be quite undisturbed, and as he had left it. It was from within, apparently, that the foulness and horror had come. Through some strange quickening of inner life the leprosies of sin were slowly eating the thing awayâ. The uninitiated might assume that the further you go back in history, the more restrictive society was. However, Victorian England was a rare peak in censorship, leaving the more aware to sit and smile at the hypocrisy of how the elite tried to convince themselves of their own feigned virtue. But Wilde, true to his name, came in like a pornographic rockstar and penned his one and only novel about a young man who had the appearance of all things holy and the inclinations of the devil â thanks to a mysteriously enchanted portrait that absorbed all traces of his sins. People suspect, if not outright know, the depraved and sinister things Mr. Gray is involved in! Yet they go on looking the other way, because he continues to look as youthful and innocent as the day that picture was painted. I mean, how can something so beautiful be so horrific? Safety and the assurance of safety are things of the past. Whilst I live on here there is but one thing to hope for, that I may not go mad, if, indeed, I be not mad already. And for all the millenials nearly nauseated with the new-wave vampires who just want love and acceptance, I take you back to the beginning. For reference, I turn to Evil Ed: You read way too much Twilight. And I seriously am so angry you think I read Twilight. It makes for a demented irony and keeps the reader invested until the harrowing end. Mortimer looked strangely at us for an instant, and his voice sank almost to a whisper as he answered: Holmes, they were the footprints of a gigantic hound! For a guy who spent his career glorifying the art of secular reason, not many fans are aware of just how into spiritualism he was. And that element of resurrection compliments the story of a supernatural dog preying on the descendants of, the Jack of all Dicks, Hugo Baskerville so well. One definitely feels the spirit of Hugo lurking around Grimpen Mire as ominous howls ride on the wind. She bent forward to peer in, I flashed a look down the road, no one, and then I got her. She made a sort of gurgling. I was ready to bolt for it. Fowles combines the perspective of the abductor and the victim to create a dual-sympathetic response from the reader. Basically, what I mean by that is you get all the obsession from the guy and watch it boil over, then get the life of the woman he kidnapped, as well as the strong-willed narrative to survive, from her. But having both grounds it in the gritty reality of the human existence. You feel as if you know these peopleâ which makes you seriously question your associations. Much like Joey from Friends, this one spent the night in the freezer when I was done with it. But what is it about these writings that make them scary? Anyone can pen a story about monsters or killers. Of course not, there needs to be something extra. In order to make something believable, you wrap it up in facts, realities, indisputable accuracy. John Watson to Mycroft Holmes]: But people will swallow it because the rest of it is true. Moriarty wanted Sherlock destroyed, right? And you have given him the perfect ammunition. All authors write about what they know. Bram Stoker spent six years investigating not only the lands he would write about but also the vampire lore prevalent throughout literature and history. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle based nearly everything in his story on real places, people, and events. Oscar Wilde witnessed the duplicity of Victorian England every single day. And John Fowles lived portions of the lives he wrote about in his novels and used his own interests in things like Shakespeare to move plot points along. So these writers must have Page 1

2 had some other element to draw upon, right? Well, yes and no. Frankenstein is based in part on nightmares Mary Shelley had experienced. After having already suffered the death of her infant daughter, and growing up hearing the scientific experiments on lifeless figures, her mind produced this: I saw the hideous phantasm of a man stretched out, and then, on the working of some powerful engine, show signs of life and stir with an uneasy, half-vital motion. Women stooped to kiss him. And there are Black Dog Lanes in villages all over the country still. Old Shuck was said to come out at dusk, a huge, shaggy creature the size of a car, easily recognizable because of his saucer-shaped eyes weeping red fire. No one who caught sight of Black Shuck, or felt his breath on the neck, would survive until daybreak. The Birth of Horror: Fear is arguably the most logical sensation to the basic brain: So we find outlets for it. We write about it. Surround ourselves with incredible iterations of our generic fears so that we can approach them, share them, even laugh at them after a while. No, what really makes a good horror story is the ability to connect with its readers. The unique aspect of reading is that it requires just as much imagination from the reader as it does from the writer. The two work in unison. Your ability to relate to the experiences on some level makes it breathe. What terrified me will terrify others; and I need only describe the spectre which had haunted my midnight pillow. Horror jumps from one brain to another because, from primitive times, we all experience fear and the desire to overcome it. True horror challenges the instinct for survival because the human experience is to live. Anything that threatens that mission catches the attention and the imagination. It rekindles the fire for life and encourages us to fight for what we are made for. Just that little bit of fear we implant in ourselves through reading these stories helps us to keep moving forward, always out of the dark. So, in the end, YOU are what keeps these stories scary. Keep up the good work! Page 2

4 Chapter 3 : Kel Richards LibraryThing vampire creature and is lying close to death. If Holmes dies there will be no one who can stop the world's greatest criminal mastermind-dr Grimsby Defoe. Doyle had been requested by his university to contribute a short piece of literature for a charity magazine. It shares many similarities to the canonical stories. The Story of the Lost Special Though Doyle had killed off his character by, he still wrote other short stories for publication in the Strand Magazine, including "The Story of the Lost Special", a seemingly inexplicable mystery in which a special train and its few passengers disappear between two stations. After the mystery is described in full, it is stated that a letter appeared in the press, giving a proposed solution from "an amateur reasoner of some celebrity". It is possible, and has been proposed by Haining, Tracy, and Green, amongst others that this "amateur reasoner" was Sherlock Holmes. The strongest clue to this is the quotation, "once one has eliminated the impossible However, this suggested solution is proved wrong by a confession from the organising criminal once he is later arrested for an unrelated crime. Haining suggested that Doyle was "getting out some Holmes" during the series hiatus, but given the failure of the unnamed detective it appears he was parodying his most famous creation. It follows the same pattern; the mystery this time surrounds the appearance of a dead man in a railway carriage, with six pocket watches in his jacket. A man involved in the accidental murder of the victim writes a letter to the detective, saying that it was a "mighty clever solution" but entirely incorrect and continues to share the true events of that day. It shares the same backing for categorising as a Sherlock Holmes story as "The Story of the Lost Special", and appears in French anthologies. Plot for Sherlock Holmes Story c. Conan Doyle wrote a short Sherlock Holmes story, just words long, onto the tiny pages of a specially constructed miniature book: Though written 28 years after "The Field Bazaar", this is almost a companion piece to that story. Unlike almost all parts of the Sherlock Holmes story it is written in the third person, presumably due to its length. Holmes is not present, but Watson is, in a very different form. He acts discreditably and even marries another woman. It has many original parts which are not found in the short stories but borrows many events from the canonical adventures, namely " A Scandal in Bohemia " and " The Adventure of the Final Problem ". It includes the very first mention of the phrase "Elementary, my dear Watson". While Conan Doyle wrote the original version, it is unclear how much of his material survived in the play as performed, which was written by Gillette. Conan Doyle and Gillette later revised the play together; it has since been revised by others twice. The play, originally entitled The Stonor Case, differs from the story in several small details, such as the names of some of the characters. An Evening With Mr Sherlock Holmes "The Crown Diamond" is an alternate version of the short story " The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone " though it predates its counterpart by some time, [13] Sometime during the original run the short story was adapted from the play, this is the reason that the narrative is told in third person rather than by the traditional narrator Watson. Some claim that the play originally appeared in an early draft of "Sherlock Holmes" above and was later removed, with some elements finding their way into " The Adventure of the Empty House " before the entire play was resurrected, some years later, into "The Crown Diamond" and "The Mazarin Stone. Sherlock Holmes" This essay was featured in the Strand Magazine as a Christmas treat to its readers. It contains, at the end, J. In it, Conan Doyle listed what he thought were the best Holmes adventures.
