3 About the Author Abraham Bram Stoker ( ) was born in Ireland. He was a sickly child, bedridden most of the time until age seven. A popular theory suggests that this childhood illness accounts for Stoker s morbid tendencies. He recovered and attended school, graduating from Trinity College in Dublin. He graduated with honors in mathematics. Although Stoker wanted to write, he pursued a career as a civil servant like his father. He married Florence Bacombe, and they had one son, Noel. In 1878, he moved to London to become manager for the famous actor Henry Irving, a position he kept until Irving s death in Stoker s first full-length novel, The Snake s Pass, was published in During that same year, he began research for Dracula. He eventually wrote 17 books. After Irving s death, Stoker suffered a stroke, from which he never fully recovered. In addition, he apparently suffered from syphilis. He died at the age of 64. Historical Background Stoker based Dracula on his research on the Victorian culture s superstitions, rituals, and legends associated with vampires. Prince Vlad Tepes ( ), better known as Vlad the Impaler, served as Stoker s model for Count Dracula. This 15 th Century nobleman was noted for his ruthless bloodletting during his war campaigns. It is rumored Vlad Tepes killed (or ordered killed) about 100,000 men, women, and children and viciously opposed Christianity. Rumors abounded about his vile pleasure in impaling his victims and draining their blood. In addition to the title of Impaler, Vlad was also called Dracula, which means devil or son of the Dragon, based on his father s participation in the Order of the Dragon, formed by the Holy roman Emperor Sigismund to defeat the Turks. Vlad, the Impaler later became known as the son of the devil.
4 Characters Count Dracula is the vampire for whom the book is named and whose name is based on the Romanian word for devil. He is the epitome of evil. His home, Castle Dracula, is in the Carpathian Mountains in Transylvania. In the novel, he purchases a home in London in hopes of branching out. He wants new victims to dominate in order to satisfy his need for blood, and the modernized people of England will not suspect his presence until it is too late. Tall with strong, aquiline face (sharp, like an eagle) Massive eyebrows and moustache (but he can change his appearance) Pointed teeth and ears Very pale with rank breath Dracula is one of the Un-dead, being neither alive nor dead. He can shape shift into other animal forms (bats, dogs, mist, etc.) He has exceptional strength and vitality. His power weakens during the daylight hours. He must sleep on the soil of his land to rejuvenate. He has hypnotic powers, but no reflection in a mirror. He has a problem with garlic and holy symbols (crucifix, holy water, communion wafers, etc.) Jonathan Harker is a young, gentlemanly solicitor (lawyer) who is engaged to marry Mina Murray. He is competent and observant. His aging employer sends him to Dracula s castle to finalize details for Dracula s purchase of a London estate. He is a key member of the team who must destroy Dracula. Mina Murray is a young school teacher who is engaged to marry Jonathan Harker. She is intelligent, practical, and systematic. Mina symbolizes purity and faithfulness. Van Helsing proclaims that she has the mind of a man and the heart of a woman. She is a key member of the team who must destroy Dracula. Lucy Westenra is Mina s best friend. She is beautiful, and men love her. While she is not as smart or pure as Mina, she is not a bad person. You will love reading about her trust me. Arthur Holmwood becomes Lord Godalming when his father dies. He is a friend of Seward, Morris, and Van Helsing. He is a key member of the team who must destroy Dracula. Dr. John Seward exhibits scientific, rational thought. He is the director of a lunatic asylum that just so happens to be next door to Dracula s new London estate. He is especially intrigued with the bizarre behavior of one of his patients, Renfield. He is a key member of the team who must destroy Dracula. Quincey P. Morris is a rich Texan who exhibits Western mannerisms and speech. He is a friend of Holmwood. He is a key member of the team who must destroy Dracula. Dr. Abraham Van Helsing, a Dutch doctor from Amsterdam, is a highly intelligent and advanced scientist, yet he maintains an open-mindedness that allows him to consider the supernatural. His knowledge of folklore and superstition makes him a key member of the team who must destroy Dracula. R.M. Renfield is one of Seward s lunatics at the asylum. You will love reading about him trust me.
