1 Antimatter, the Ultimate Mirror In 1928, the physicist Paul Dirac predicted the existence of antimatter in a mirror world, where the electrical charges on particles would be opposite to those of ordinary matter. This mirror world is found, fleetingly, at the quantum level, with positrons the counterpart of electrons, and antiprotons the opposite of protons. This book introduces the Lewis Carroll world of antimatter without using technical language or complex equations. The author shows how the quest for symmetry in physics slowly revealed the properties of antimatter. When large particle accelerators came on line, the antimatter debris of collisions provided new clues on its properties. This is a fast-paced and lucid account of how science fiction became fact. GORDON FRASER works at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics, Geneva, Switzerland, where he is Editor of the CERN Courier, a monthly magazine covering all aspects of particle physics. He has been a Visiting Lecturer in Science Communication at several universities.

7 Preface Antimatter a name so familiar, yet at the same time so impenetrable. Adding the simple prefix anti- to an everyday concept immediately confounds understanding and stimulates the imagination. Excellent material for science fiction from fertile minds. One of the first was the talented Isaac Asimov, inventing robots powered by brains whose pathways used antiparticles (positrons). Then came Jack Williamson s contra-terrene (CT) matter. Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry introduced faster-than-light spaceships powered by antimatter. This science-fiction success has endowed antimatter with incredible popular appeal. In January 1996, a modest press release from CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics in Geneva, Switzerland, reported that a small experiment had synthesized the first atoms of antihydrogen, the simplest form of chemical antimatter. Amplified by the science-fiction factor, the response was incredible within hours these few anti-atoms made prime-time TV and headlines all over the world. Not since the development of nuclear weapons had fundamental physics captured so much public imagination. Away from the hype, this book explains why antimatter is serious science the ultimate physics. Thanks are due to Maurice Bourquin, Frank Close, Don Cundy, John Eades, James Gillies, Maurice Jacob, Rolf Landua, Dieter Möhl, Walter Oelert, Pervez Hoodbhoy, Faheem Hussain, Alvaro de Rujula, Christine Sutton and Sam Ting who have helped me along the way.
